Artistic PrayerArtistic prayer can involve music, dance, painting, or other forms of art-making.Art-making is an opportunity to engage our imaginations and develop the gift of imagining. Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God through metaphor, symbol, and story. He used these tools to teach us and to nourish our imagination. Matter and the world of imagination are vehicles for God’s revelationWhen we are creative, we participate in that revelation.God speaks to us not only through our rational thinking, but also through image and color and sound. Using the arts in prayer gives us access to another language to explore and express our relationship to the sacred.

How to Pray ArtisticallyYou can explore creative expression with paint, markers, collage, icons, poetry,

movement words, or sound.

Give yourself permission to be totally immersed in the creative act. Let go of any concerns about the outcome and enjoy the process. See where the Spirit takes your art-prayer.

Create a prayer altar where you can slowly add the creations you make in response to your prayer.

Your prayer time might have brought to mind a song. Honor this gift from God by singing as much of it as you remember.

Let your body express your experience of prayer Is there a gesture you could use to embody your response to God’s invitation?

Take a lump of clay in your hands. Call to mind the image from Scripture of God as a potter (Jer 18:1-6). Explore the ways that God is shaping your life.

Create a poem. Poetry is simply condensed language which forces you to be selective with the images that you use to capture the essence of your prayer experience.

Help me, Lord, to hear you, To listen with an open heart,

For the silent whispering sounds you send Help me Lord to know that you are calling me,

And to answer that request Help me Lord, to reach you

Know you more clearly And believe in your more deeply Help me Lord, to find that path

You laid out for me And to take it.

Bless me with the courage to act, To respond to the unseen and unexpected,

To that Spirit of God working in me. Help me Lord, to see you,

Recognise your light In the lives of people.

Kindle in my heart the will to serve you, by serving them, To give generously not just what I have

But what I am.
