The Greatest Unifier Language is perhaps the greatest divider in human history. Why? Because language defines ethnicities, tribes, races and conveys cultures and religions. Even a slight variation in the way a particular language is spoken is enough to divide people. The greatest atrocities in history have been committed, not among people who look physically different (although there is some of that too), but among people who look physically alike. We see this in Asia, Europe, and Africa. We see it all around us, even within our Church. On the Pentecost day, God himself provides a solution. He grants us a new language through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the language of love, made possible, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Love is the greatest unifier. When it is present, we easily connect to one another regardless of differences in our languages, cultures, races, or religions. What we see at Pentecost is the miracle of love through the power of the Holy Spirit:

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim…. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, "Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? Acts 2:1-11

Love transcends of barriers and overcomes all human weaknesses. But it is the Holy Spirit that makes that kind of love (agape or divine love) possible. That is why we pray in the invocation of the Spirit, “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.” Now, we all have natural love, which allows us to love selectively – our family members, friends and associates. But agape or divine love is a super-natural love that is given ONLY to those whose hearts are open to Christ. People who are not in the Spirit will never be able to rise up to this level of love. That is why St. Paul says in the second reading: “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God…. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die…” (Rom 8:8-13). Only the kind of love that the Spirit gives pleases God because it transcends all nationalities, languages, cultures, races, and religions and even extends to enemies as well. This is the kind of love that builds a strong parish. Let us all ask the Holy Spirit to enkindle in us this kind of love.

El Unificador Más Grande

La lengua es quizás el mayor divisor de la historia de la humanidad. Por qué? Porque el lenguaje define etnias, tribus, razas y transmite culturas y religiones. Incluso una pequeña variación en la forma en que se habla un idioma

en particular es suficiente para dividir a la gente. Las mayores atrocidades de la historia se han cometido, no entre personas que se ven físicamente diferentes (aunque también hay algo de eso), sino entre personas que se parecen físicamente. Vemos esto en Asia, Europa y África. Lo vemos a nuestro alrededor, incluso dentro de nuestra Iglesia.

En el día de Pentecostés, Dios mismo provee una solución. Él nos concede un nuevo lenguaje a través del poder del Espíritu Santo. Es el lenguaje del amor, hecho posible por el poder del Espíritu Santo. El amor es el más grande unificador. Cuando está presente, nos conectamos fácilmente unos con otros sin importar las diferencias en nuestros idiomas, culturas, razas o religiones. Lo que vemos en Pentecostés es el milagro del amor a través del poder del Espíritu Santo:

“Y todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en diferentes lenguas, según el Espíritu les permitía proclamar....". Y había en Jerusalén judíos piadosos de todas las naciones bajo el cielo. Al oír este ruido, se reunieron en una gran multitud, pero estaban confundidos porque cada uno los escuchaba hablar en su propio idioma. Se quedaron atónitos y, asombrados, preguntaron: "¿No son galileos todos estos pueblos que hablan? Entonces, ¿cómo es que cada uno de nosotros los oye en su lengua materna? Hechos 2:1-11

El amor trasciende las barreras y supera todas las debilidades humanas.

Pero es el Espíritu Santo el que hace posible ese tipo de amor (ágape o amor divino). Por eso oramos en la invocación del Espíritu: "Ven Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles y enciende en ellos el fuego de tu amor". Ahora, todos tenemos un amor natural, que nos permite amar selectivamente - los miembros de nuestra familia, amigos y asociados. Pero el amor ágape o divino es un amor sobrenatural que se da SOLAMENTE a aquellos cuyos corazones están abiertos a Cristo. Las personas que no están en el Espíritu nunca serán capaces de elevarse a este nivel de amor. Por eso dice San Pablo en la segunda lectura: "Los que están en la carne no pueden agradar a Dios.... Porque si vives según la carne, morirás..." (Romanos 8:8-13). Sólo el tipo de amor que el Espíritu da agrada a Dios porque trasciende todas las nacionalidades, idiomas, culturas, razas y religiones e incluso se extiende a los enemigos también.

Este es el tipo de amor que construye una parroquia fuerte. Pidamos todos al Espíritu Santo que encienda en nosotros este tipo de amor.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING Sacred Heart Church is inviting all children of our parish who have made their first communion to come to a four-day ALTAR SERVER TRAINING Summer Session to be held the week of Monday June 17, through Thursday June 20, from 10:00am to 12pm in the church. You must complete all four sessions of the program. Come, share your time and talent with our faith community in the weekend liturgical celebrations. Applications for this ministry may be obtained at the parish office, school office, religious education office, or at the information center in the Friendship Corner after the Sunday morning masses. I am writing this article on the eve of Fr John’s funeral and I am filled with so many emotions. I have not yet cried over the passing of my friend but I know that the flood gates will open at the funeral tomorrow. I typically deal with sadness by making jokes and trying to be light hearted. Fr John was an amazing friend that I am going to miss tremendously! The day after he passed we had youth group and we shared memories of Fr John and what he meant to us, it was a truly wonderful way to keep his memory alive. The thing that is most hard for me is that we had him here about a month ago to hear confessions and to do an explanation mass for our teens and our sponsors. It was a breath of fresh air to have him with us and enjoy one last time a mass with him. Well there I go, I started crying with that last sentence. There is a line from a movie that sums up Fr John for me perfectly: “Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human.”-James T. Kirk. Fr John was a nerd like me and he loved Star Trek so for me it’s fitting to send him off with those words. Also, these words are so true for Fr. John, he was a real down to earth guy that was easy to get along with and he will be missed! So to my friend, my brother, my spiritual father, goodbye Fr. John Vogel, may you rest in peace in the Glory of God.

Estoy escribiendo este artículo en la víspera del funeral del Padre John y estoy lleno de tantas emociones. Todavía no he llorado por el fallecimiento de mi amigo, pero sé que las compuertas se abrirán en el funeral mañana. • REGISTRATION FOR FALL CLASSES is now in progress. Registration forms can be found at our website, www.sacredheartventura.org under "faith formation". Click on "religious education" and download the form. They can also be found bulldog-clipped to our religious education office door, located behind the church and central to the school. Instructions for registering are on the back of the form.

• OFFICE HOURS are Sundays 10-12, Mondays 8-12, Tuesdays 4:30-6:30, Wednesdays 4:30-6:30, Thursdays 8-12. We are closed Fridays and Saturdays.

• FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION can begin as early as first grade. It is a two year program. The children receive the sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession) and Eucharist (Communion) during their second year. If your child is not baptized, we can arrange for the baptism at the end of the first year of classes.

• Important notices for families of children entering their second year:

a. Students who have not completed their prayers must finish no later than Wednesday, June 12th.

b. Parents are asked to bring baptismal certificates for second year children no later than June 30th.

c. We have eight students needing Baptism. Parents of children who have completed their first year but still need to be baptized are encouraged to call the parish office as soon as possible to set up an interview.

d. Registration for second year should be completed by June 30th. For those who need an extended time, August 11th is the final deadline.

• We are looking for volunteer catechists Sundays and Wednesdays. Please let us know if you are available to teach.

Family to Family We are looking for volunteers to help in our mission to serve a hot lunch to the less fortunate of our community, On

the third Wednesday of each month we cook and serve lunch at Catholic Charities on the Avenue. We will be serving on June 19th and if you are interested please call Nita at 805-650-8557. This is a very rewarding service we provide and only takes 2 or 3 hours out of your morning. Volunteers can arrive any time after 10 and we serve at 11:30 and we are done by 1:00pm. Please consider helping those in need of hot meal.

Please join us for the Corpus Christi Celebration on June 23rd, at the 10:30 AM Mass. The procession will promptly begin at 10 AM in front of the church, and will proceed to the three altars around the back parking lot. Those who attend either the 9 AM or 10:30 Mass are encouraged to give reverence and adoration to the Blessed Sacrament. BOX PACKING PARTY

Today, Sunday June 9th , is our Annual Box packing party at 12:30 in Biedermann Hall. All are welcome to come and help pack. A light lunch will be provided. This is a fun event for all ages. Last year we we able to pack 30 boxes and 90,000 vitamins in just an hour and a half! This is a great opportunity to contribute to the care of the poorest of the poor in Nigeria. This is also a good chance to meet the WACM team members who will be going on the medical mission trip to the refugee camps of Nigeria.
