OPENING HYMN – LSB 537
“Beautiful Savior”
1. Beautiful Savior, King of creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I’d love Thee, Truly I’d serve Thee,
Light of my soul, My joy, my crown.
2. Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands,
Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
He makes our sorr’wing spirit sing.
3. Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,
Bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels in the sky.
4. Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, Praise, adoration
Now and forevermore be Thine!
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
C: who made heaven and earth.
P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore, You are feared.
P: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word and call upon Him in prayer and
praise, *and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship
of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness, and confess before God and
one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot
free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge
in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake
of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
*(Saturday services – Communion)
C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to
everlasting life. Amen.
P: Almighty God, in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake
forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His
authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the
† Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
KYRIE
C: Lord, have mercy;
Christ, have mercy;
Lord, have mercy.
GLORIA
To God on high be glory
And peace to all the earth;
Good-will from God in heaven
Proclaimed at Jesus’ birth!
We praise and bless You, Father;
Your holy name, we sing –
Our thanks for Your great glory,
Lord God, our heav’nly King.
To You, O sole-begotten,
The Father’s Son, we pray;
O Lamb of God, our Savior,
You take our sins away.
Have mercy on us, Jesus;
Receive our heartfelt cry,
Where You in pow’r are seated
At God’s right hand on high.
For You alone are holy;
You only are the Lord.
Forever and forever,
Be worshiped and adored;
You with the Holy Spirit
Alone are Lord Most High,
In God the Father’s glory.
“Amen!” our glad reply.
SALUTATION
P: The Lord be with you
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
COLLECT OF THE DAY
P: O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on
the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty
power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT READING
Psalm 102:8-16
All day long my enemies taunt me;
those who rail against me use my name as a curse.
For I eat ashes as my food
and mingle my drink with tears
because of your great wrath,
for you have taken me up and thrown me aside.
My days are like the evening shadow;
I wither away like grass.
But you, Lord, sit enthroned forever;
your renown endures through all generations.
You will arise and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to show favor to her;
the appointed time has come.
For her stones are dear to your servants;
her very dust moves them to pity.
The nations will fear the name of the Lord,
all the kings of the earth will revere your glory.
For the Lord will rebuild Zion
and appear in his glory.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
EPISTLE READING
2 Corinthians 5:14-21
For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and
therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for
themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. So from now on we
regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this
way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:
The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself
through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the
world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has
committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,
as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf:
Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we
might become the righteousness of God.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
ALLELUIA VERSE
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
These things are written that
you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
HOLY GOSPEL
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-first chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord.
“At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great
glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because
your redemption is drawing near.” He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and
all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that
summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the
kingdom of God is near. “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away
until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words
will never pass away. “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing,
drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a
trap.”
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.
APOSTLES’ CREED (SATURDAY)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus
Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He
ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From
thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the
holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
NICENE CREED – (SUNDAY)
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all
things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of
God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God
of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom
all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was
crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third
day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at
the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the
living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy
Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who
with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the
prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge
on Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and
the life of the world to come. Amen.
SERMON HYMN – LSB 414
“Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here”
1. ‘Tis good, Lord, to be here!
Thy glory fills the night;
Thy face and garments, like the sun,
Shine with unborrowed light.
2. ‘Tis good, Lord, to be here!
Thy beauty to behold
Where Moses and Elijah stand,
Thy messengers of old.
3. Fulfiller of the past
And hope of things to be,
We hail Thy body glorified
And our redemption see.
4. Before we taste of death,
We see Thy kingdom come;
We long to hold the vision bright
And make this hill our home.

SERMON OUTLINE
The Transfiguration of Jesus
Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and
James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the
appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And
behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory
and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now
Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they
became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.
And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good
that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one
for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. As he was saying these things, a cloud
came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One;
listen to him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they
kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad,
The honors of Thy name.

Tis life and health and peace.

His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood avails for me.
