THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.

REFLECTIONREFLECTIONREFLECTIONREFLECTION
ARE YOU TALKING TO ME? We’ve all had it happen. In the middle of a conversation we get the nagging feeling someone is “making a point”. Is it me, we wonder, are they saying this for my benefit? It’s awkward and rather embarrassing. We look around wondering if the message is meant for someone else instead. Squirming in our mental chairs we wish we could blurt out, hey, are you talking to me?
Strange to think the same thing happens when God speaks. On Jordan’s banks the crowd heard John’s call to repentance. “One is coming,” John said, “who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Conscience-pricked the crowd wondered, hey, is he talking to me? And then gloriously God’s voice declared: “You are my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” Now, God already that. Jesus knew it. So why say it? Because we all need to hear it. We need to know that God’s message of forgiveness is for us, not the guy standing next to us. Before we can ask He answers. “Yes,” He says, “I’m talking to you!” Editor’s Assistant 2009

BAPTISM OF THE LORD: John is baptizing when Jesus draws near. Perhaps Jesus comes to
sanctify his mortal baptizer, certainly our Lord comes to bury sinful humanity in the purifying waters of His Baptism. He comes to sanctify the Jordan for our sake and in readiness for us, He who is spirit and flesh comes to begin a new creation through the Spirit and water. Editors Assistant 2006
PURE WATERS: The Lord was baptized not to be cleansed Himself, but to cleanse the waters, so that those waters, cleansed by the flesh of Christ which knew no sin, might have the power of baptism. St. Ambrose Editors Assistant 2006

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: KINDERGARTEN-
EIGHTH GRADE
Our Divine Savior offers Religious Education classes for children in kindergarten-8th grade. Classes meet in the social hall on Sunday mornings from 10:05am-
10:50am. Registration information is available before classes begin or in the office. If you are new to our Parish or to our Religious Education programs please contact the Religious Education office for more information at 345-6201.
SACRAMENTS
Students are eligible to receive their first sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion any time after 2nd grade. Our program is designed to accommodate students in 2nd-7th grade when they and their family are ready. Students are eligible to receive their Confirmation after 8th grade when they and their family are ready.
How do you know if your student and your family is ready? Sacraments are optional and not required. Therefore, you are probably ready when your family is able to attend Mass and religious education classes regularly. Sacrament preparation is 2 years. We look forward to preparing for and celebrating this special time with our Parish families. Please contact the Religious Education office at 345-6201 for more information.
HELP WANTED
We are currently looking for volunteers to support our Children's Liturgy ministry during the 11AM Mass on Sundays. Children's Liturgy is an opportunity for our kindergarten-4th grade children to hear the Word proclaimed and explained in a way that they understand. This is a favorite for children and parents. It allows everyone to get the most out of Mass and connect with the Gospel. We need help with crowd control as well as leading the liturgy. This is a team effort and all the training and information you need will be provided. We are looking for help on a weekly basis, monthly basis, or just a few times throughout the school year. Please prayerfully consider if this is a ministry you might be interested in supporting and contact the Religious Education office or Pamela Meuter at 566-0425.

THE BULLETIN BOARDTHE BULLETIN BOARDTHE BULLETIN BOARDTHE BULLETIN BOARD
Do you realize that ODS has a bulletin board, just
for you? It is posted on the outside, rear church
wall in the gathering area at the exit of the
church. The board lists the schedules for the
liturgical ministers (Eucharistic Ministers,
Lectors, Commentators, Greeters and Ushers) so
that if the dates are a blur following the holidays
you can easily check to see your next committed
date.
Is there an event of interest that didn't fit into
the limited Bulletin space? Check out all the
details on the Bulletin Board!
Often the Sacramento Diocese hosts events for
spiritual enrichment. ODS is fortunate to be one
of the satellite sites for these courses. They are
listed on the bulletin board, along with date and
time and cost, if applicable. Many are offered
right here in our Knight's Room in the Social
Hall. There are some wonderful resources
available, but in order to know about them and
take advantage of the bargains, you need to
LOOK at the Bulletin Board.
Don't be in the dark about the next ODS news.
Take a moment to look over the bulletin board!
