Annual Summer Mission Appeal This weekend we welcome Fr. Matthew Nyan Tokpah from Liberia, West Africa who will speak on behalf of the Archdiocese of Monrovia, Liberia. Every parish in the Archdiocese participates in the Missionary Cooperation plan which serves to help over 100 mission dioceses, religious congregations and lay mission organizations. Through the Missionary Cooperation Plan the Archdiocese is able to foster mission vitality and inspire discipleship in parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago. These appeals not only provide much needed support for missionary efforts in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Pacific Islands, but they also offer a way for our own parish communities to become engaged in sharing Christ with the world. Missionaries go across the world to evangelize in remote, struggling, and persecuted communities. They form priests, educate adults and children, offer medical care, provide safe homes, administer the Sacraments, and much more. Fr. Matthew represents the Archdiocese of Monrovia, Liberia. Monrovia is a small country in West Africa situated between Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast. Six and a half percent of the population of Monrovia Liberia is Catholic and there are about 30 parishes staffed by 20 diocesan priests and 27 religious. There are over 3000 individuals per priest in Monrovia. Presently, the Archdiocese has about 15 seminarians in formation for the priesthood. Without a doubt, it is a poor country and the church there is in need of financial support to continue their ministry. Fr. Matthew informed me he is trying to raise funds for women and children development programs. Additionally, in 2014-2015 Monrovia was hit hard with the Ebola Virus which took many adults leaving the country with many orphans who are in desperate need of support. Please warmly welcome Fr. Matthew to Divine Providence and be generous in supporting his appeal with your financial assistance. Please pray for those in the Archdiocese of Monrovia who strive to bring the message and life of Christ to those who live there. In doing so we are fulfilling our requirement as disciples to support the Universal Church throughout the world. Fr. Tim

GOD’S WORK

We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God?

We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed.

What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent”. ~John 6:29

The Sacred Heart Cathedral or simply Cathedral of Monrovia, is the name given to a religious building belonging to the Catholic Church and is located across Broad Street in the heart of the city of Monrovia, capital of the African country of Liberia. It is a temple that serves as the headquarters of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Monrovia (Archidioecesis Monroviensis) that was created on December 19, 1981 by Pope John Paul II by the bull Patet Ecclesiae. Follow the Roman or Latin rite and is under the pastoral responsibility of the Bishop Lewis Zeigler.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

REPORT

We recently received an updated report through July 19, 2018 from the Annual Catholic Appeal Office of the Archdiocese as to what has been pledged and contributed to the Appeal for our parish. We remind you that when our pledge payments exceed our goal, we receive all of the additional funds for use in our parish. PARISH GOAL: $44,018.36 NUMBER OF DONORS: 143 AMOUNT PLEDGED: $32,769.00 AMOUNT PAID: $29,067.34 REMAINING BALANCE TOWARD GOAL: $3,701.66 Thank you to all who have contributed so generously to this Appeal. In the event you have not yet contributed to the Appeal, envelopes and pledge cards are available in the Narthex.

Thank you again for your support.

“Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily por on; thus will I test them, to see whether

they follow my instruc ons or not.” (EXODUS 16:4)

When the Israelites gathered more than their daily por on of manna, the surplus became wormy and ro en. In the same way today, self-reliance, pride and ego leads to hoarding and excessive surplus of goods and money. Living a stewardship lifestyle helps us discern our “wants” from our “needs”.

Living a generous lifestyle reminds us that God will provide all that we need and that we have plenty to share.

~Transfiguration of Our Lord~

The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord recalls the revelation of Christ's glory on Mount Tabor in the presence of three of His disciples, Peter, James, and John. Christ was transfigured before their eyes, shining with divine light, and He was joined by Moses and Elijah, representing the Old Testament Law and the prophets. The Transfiguration occurred in the early months of the year, after Jesus revealed to His disciples that He would be put to death in Jerusalem, and before He made His way to Jerusalem for the events of His Passion during Holy Week.

The Transfiguration was a special event in which God allowed certain apostles to have a privileged spiritual experience that was meant to strengthen their faith for the challenges they would later endure. But it was only a temporary event. It was not meant to be permanent. In the same way, at certain times in this life, God may give certain members of the faithful (not all of the faithful, all the time), special experiences of his grace that strengthen their faith.

We should welcome these experiences for the graces they are, but we should not expect them to continue indefinitely, nor should we be afraid or resentful when they cease. They may have been meant only as momentary glimpses of the joy of heaven to sustain us as we face the challenges of this life, to help strengthen us on the road that will ultimately bring us into the infinite and endless joy of heaven.

What’s in your heart?

Manna from heaven is what we’re all waiting for. But we keep looking up to the sky to find it, instead of in the body of Christ, namely our sisters and brothers.

In what ways do you hunger and thirst? How can others, through God’s ways of holiness and truth, fulfill your needs? How can you fulfill the needs of others?

Jesus tells us that the work of God is to believe in the one he sent. How strong is your belief in Jesus? What could strengthen your faith?

Think about a time when you felt really famished—your stomach growling and your head light. Imagine living a lifetime with that level of hunger. Pray for those whose hunger is not satisfied. Imagine a spiritual hunger at that same level of intensity. Perhaps those hungry souls are part of your parish or priestly community. Pray for yourself and them to find fulfillment in Jesus.

PRAYER and FORMS of PRAYER

God is always with us. He wants us to talk to him and to listen to him. In prayer, we raise our hearts and minds to God. We are able to speak to and listen to God because, through the Holy Spirit, God teaches us how to pray.

We Pray in Many Ways Because prayer is so important, the Church teaches us to pray often and in many ways.

Prayer of Blessing and Adoration: We acknowledge our dependence on God. Prayer of Petition: We ask God for physical and spiritual goods. Prayer of Intercession: We make requests on behalf of others. Prayer of Thanksgiving: We thank God for everything He does for us. Praise: We express our love for God.

We can pray silently or aloud. We can pray alone or with others. Praying with others is called communal prayer. We Meditate and Contemplate One way to pray is to meditate. To meditate is to think about God. We try to keep our attention and focus on God. In meditation we may use Scripture, prayer books or icons, which are religious images, to help us concentrate and spark our consciousness. Another way to pray is to contemplate. This means that we rest quietly in God’s presence. We Get Ready to Pray We live in a very busy, noisy, and fast paced world. Sometimes, because of this, we have difficulty concentrating. In order to meditate or reflect, we need to prepare ourselves. We can get ready for meditation by resting our bodies in a comfortable position. Sitting with our backs straight and both feet on the floor is one comfortable position. We can close our eyes, fold our hands comfortably in front of us, and silently take a deep breath and then let it out slowly. We can establish a rhythm by slowing counting to three while breathing in and slowly counting to three while breathing out. Concentrating on our breathing helps us to quiet our thoughts. We Avoid Distractions If we become distracted by thinking of something such as the day at school or work, we can just go back to thinking about our breathing. After a little practice, we will be able to avoid distractions, pray with our heart, and spend time with God.

Meditation Monday The Transfiguration of the Lord (Feast)

Be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place. (2 Peter 1:19)

Peter was one of only three witnesses to the Lord’s transfiguration. Along with James and John, he saw Jesus glorified; he saw Moses and Elijah talking with him; he heard God’s voice of approval. Now, decades later, Peter is talking about this glorious event: “We had been eyewitnesses of his majesty . . .while we were with him on the holy mountain” (2 Peter 1:16, 18). Clearly, the transfiguration was one of the most memorable things Peter had ever witnessed.

You might expect Peter to talk about the transfiguration in glowing terms as a special revelation given to him—and he did. You might expect him to sing of the glory of the transfigured Christ—and he did. But he also described this glimpse into heaven as a light in the midst of darkness. Peter understood that Jesus had given him this vision as a way to encourage and prepare him for the darkness that would engulf him when Jesus faced his passion. Hold on to this vision, Peter. Recall it when you are tempted to give up hope. I am the Son of God, and I will rise again.

That’s a message we all need to hear. It can seem as if no matter where we look, we see darkness—war, poverty, crime, abortion, broken families. All of these realities can discourage us and tempt us to give up on the call to holiness. But remember Peter’s words: the transfiguration of Christ reveals the true, unchanging foundation to all of reality. Jesus is glorified. He is the Father’s beloved Son. He reigns over everything. Even if evil seems triumphant, Jesus’ light is still stronger than the darkness.

Look around, and you’ll find glimmers of light in unexpected places—in acts of compassion for the suffering, in acts of courage in the face of evil, in acts of self-sacrifice for the sake of a stranger or loved one. Just as Jesus’ love shone during his own crucifixion, his light can shine in every dark corner today. That light will continue to shine until Jesus comes again. Place your faith in him, and it will shine more and more brightly in you too.

“Jesus, help me to fix my eyes on you in the midst of the darkness.”

Edith Stein was born in 1891 in Poland to an observant Jewish family. She received a doctorate in philosophy and converted to Roman Catholicism. In 1933 she

entered a Carmelite monastery and given the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. On the morning of August 7, 1942, 987 Jews were deported to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. On August 9th, Sr. Teresa Benedicta, her sister, and many more of her people were killed in mass gas chambers.
