FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Friends, How faithful is our God to His saving promises made from ages past. We hear in the First Reading of Moses promising the people of Israel a future prophet will come to speak in God’s Name. In the Gospel of Mark, we see that promise fulfilled in Jesus, who both teaches with authority and heals the deepest wounds of the human spirit. In the proclamation of God’s living Word in our parish today, Jesus again stands in our midst, teaching, healing and saving His People. I would like to thank those parishioners who represented us on the March for Life in Washington or served at the Altar both on Monday and through the day on Tuesday to pray for the coming of a new day for families; a new day for all humanity. Your generous giving of self is much appreciated by us all. As the transition meetings begin to build our regional school, I am asking that you keep in your prayers the team members of Mother of Divine Providence, Saint Matthew and Sts. Cosmas and Damian parishes who are committed to insuring that Catholic Education remains a vital part of our ecclesial mission. We look forward to this week to Catholic Schools Week, please take time to visit our school and support our parish mission. I also want to express my sincere appreciation to the outgoing members of our Pastoral Council: Mr. Victor Limongelli, Mr. Steve Gibbons (liaison with the Finance Council), Miss Christa Faustman and Mrs. Lucille Young. Their goodwill in sharing their thoughts and prayers with me as well as Monsignor Conway was and will remain of great value to the deepening of our faith as a parish. As our parish gathers to worship God this weekend, let us be of one mind and one heart in listening for His Voice and opening our hearts to receive Him with charity. With God’s blessing for you and your families,

Father Cioppi

IN OUR PARISH

DEAD SEA SCROLL EXHIBIT The Dead Sea Scrolls are on exhibit in New York along with other artifacts from the Holy Land until April 15. This is a once in a lifetime exhibit featuring the famed Dead Sea Scrolls, an actual stone from the Western Wall from the Second temple in Jerusalem and more than 500 never before seen artifacts from biblical times. We are looking at the possibility of planning a parish trip to see the exhibit if there is enough interest. We would be going on a Saturday in March (either the 3

rd or the 31

st) and the cost of the trip would be about

$80.00. This would include transportation, ticket for the exhibit and a boxed lunch. Definite plans will be made once we know if there is an interest for this event. Please contact Sister Veronica no later than February 6

th at 610-265-4178 or

[email protected] if you think you would like to be part of this trip

OUR LADY OF LOURDES World Day of the Sick

Saturday, February 11, 2012 Our Lady of Lourdes Praesidium of the Legion of Mary will join in praying the Rosary for the sick through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes. Please join us on this day immediately following the 8:00 Mass, then join us afterwards in McGrory Hall for refreshments and to learn more about our work.

CHOIR NEWS

We are beginning a recruiting campaign to enlist more people for our parish adult choir. We need younger people (especially male singers) who can continue the fine musical tradition of our choir. The liturgical role of the choir is twofold: To add beauty & solemnity to the liturgy and assist the singing of the congregation. In order to make a sound that will reinforce 400-500 people in the congregation, we need more people. At a liturgy, we all help each other, we are church: the priest, musicians, and the assembly. All of us make each other more fulfilled in the liturgy when we all do our own role better. We leave the liturgy feeling renewed and refreshed. For the choir to fulfill its responsibility, there must be more voices in the choir. Hear are a few reasons to join the choir:

027 MDP for 012912

6

- You would like a deeper involvement in Mass as well as the fellowship

- You would like to give of yourself to the church in a different way

- You would like a more intense participation in the Mass

- YOU ENJOY SINGING This is a great time to join the choir since we will soon be preparing music for Lent and Easter. You do not have to know how to read music – there is no audition – ALL ARE WELCOME ! Come to a few rehearsals and try us out. If you don’t feel up to the challenge we can still part as friends. We rehearse Thursday evenings from 7:30 PM to 9:15 PM in the church and sing at the Sunday 11:30 Mass.

PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM

CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION The childen celebrated the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul with Mass on Wednesday evening. It was wonderful to hear their angelic voices chanting the Entrance and Communion Antiphons, and the parts of the Mass. The lyrics of the song during the preparation of the

Gifts captured the essence of St. Paul’s experience: “Change my heart, O God!” May we daily have a conversion of heart that will lead us deeper into the Divine Intimacy of our awesome God!

FIRST RECONCILIATION

There are 69 children of the parish who will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Saturday, February 4

these children and their families as they come to experience the loving forgiveness of our God. May the practice of making a good confession be woven as strong fibers into the fabric of their daily lives.

THE NEWS FROM OUR PARISH SCHOOL

School News http://mdpschool.com

Two weeks to go until the Auction! Howdy, partners … don’t forget to send in your response to the

Auction for Technology. Draw it out of that “safe place” (on your countertop), and let us know that you will mosey on down. There is no better fun anywhere in town. And if you care to donate an item for bidding, just go to MDPschool.com to get the low-down. We are grateful for sponsors, too. From one cowpoke to another … see ya’ there!

Congratulations to this week’s Apple of My Eye winners. Many children earned tickets through

their acts of kindness and responsibility. Each week we draw several winners from the bin of “good apples,” and this time around they are: Rachel Bunado, Connor Shaw, Claire Kilgarriff, Nathan Gomes, Elizabeth Yates, Patrick Baker You are all the Apple of My Eye. The COMMTECH computer training class for adults begins again on Thursday 2/2/12. Instruction is provided by MDP teachers & assisted by student coaches. The class runs from 3:45 – 5:15 PM, and refreshments are included. Each participant also gets a free flash drive! Our students are eager to offer their expertise as one-to-one mentors for the participants. Please invite neighbors, friends and relatives to register by calling 610-265-2323.

The fifth grade students at Mother of Divine Providence School led a drive to raise funds to sponsor cleft palate surgery for a disadvantaged child in a third world country. Connor Mulgrew

introduced this initiative, as a way to give back to others. He is featured on the website for Operation Smile. The fifth graders went to each classroom to educate the children about this mission. They held a donut sale one morning and a contest at lunchtime. The contest was a photo matching game – pair the smile with the fifth grader. The students had a drawing from all correct entries and the winner – Matthew

DeLucca (1B) - received a $25.00 Regal Cinema Gift Card. While the goal was to raise at least $240.00 for a single cleft palate surgery, they actually raised $611.00. They are designating the Operation Smile donation to: Cleft Palate Surgery for two children ($480); Antibiotics for 10 children ($30); Pain Medication for 12 children ($25); IV Starter Kit for 25 children ($50); and the balance to the Most Needed Fund. The students are completing the fund-raising activity by writing reflections on how they come to know Jesus through their service to children with need. Thank you to all who participated, and special thanks to Suzy Jo Donuts who contributed 8 dozen donuts to the cause. Free will donations are still welcome. Thank you to Mrs. Antoinette Donovan for arranging last week’s 5th and 6th grade visit to the Byrne Courthouse and Federal Building. What a fascinating tour for the students! They sat in a courtroom and enjoyed several presentations, including a segment with Judge Marjorie Rendell. Students entered the robing room, a judge’s chambers, the law library, and even met Dover, the bomb-sniffing dog. SCRIP NEWS

WHAT’S NEW

We regret to inform you that the $20 Barnes and Noble Teacher Card will no longer be available as it is being discontinued.

Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase scrip, you are purchasing gift cards that can be used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase every expense like food, clothing, and other essentials. With every purchase, you earn revenue for yourself and for MDP!

Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of non profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores and other participating retailers. Because the scrip is purchased up front with cash, the retailers offer a substantial discount. MDP then buys the scrip from Great Lakes and re-sells for full face value. The discount of 2% to 15% or more is then split between you, the purchaser, and MDP. For instance, Acme offers 5% discount. Therefore 2.5% profit goes to the purchaser and 2.5% goes to MDP. Scrip is a popular choice because families like yourselves don’t have to sell anything. You produce revenue by making regular household purchases you would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, and even gasoline can be purchased with scrip! The Parish and YOU do!!! Whatever the percentage discount the retailer offers is split between the parish and you! For instance, if the percentage is 5%. The parish gets 2.5% and you get 2.5% credit toward tuition. Credits are then tallied 2x’s a year and the total credit earned is deducted from your tuition balance. The tuition credits can be applied to any level of catholic education (pre-K thru college). If you no longer pay tuition, you may earn credits for another family member, friend or neighbor.
