Introduction

Croatia and numerous Swami devotees who live there were eagerly awaiting the arrival oftheir beloved Lord Sri Sathya Sai Baba, whose darshan was to take place exactly on the fifth Maha Samadhi anniversary. For weeks, many devotees were occupied with different seva projects on a mission to make this day one of the most magnificent in the lives of every person who would attend beloved Bhagawan’s second arrival to Croatia on a spring Sunday. The joy of the devotees was immense because everyone could find an activity to weave their love and gratitude to the omnipresent Lord. They filled packets with vibhuthi, wrote messages with Swami’s teachings, baked cakes for devotees and a big cake for Swami, painted the rooms where darshan would take place and family Koščak’s house, where Bhagawan would stay, prepared and served complimentary lunch to 1,400 people.

The festivities began on Friday, with the arrival of Bhagawan and His divine entourage at the airport, followed by dinner at the home of

the Devaraj family, who cooked for their Guru during all three days of the divine visit.

Saturday morning was reserved for a meeting of members of the Ananda Trust. Bhagawan entrusted them with the most important job in the evolution of their souls – building Ananda Ashram in Croatia as one of 17 such ashrams around the world.

Sunday’s meeting could be summed up in two words – love and joy. From the early hours, admirers began pouring in, creating a sea of love in Zagreb’s biggest congress hall, where on 24th April, 2016, 1,400 Sai devotees immersed in the divine words of wisdom and inspiration. Although the coming of Sathya Sai in the Subtle Body was expected at 10 a.m., the hall started to echo with Vedas as early as 8 a.m. in the morning, filling the darshan hall as well as the inner space of the devotees’ souls with most sacred sounds.

Bhagawan Baba came to the hall with His entourage at 8 minutes past 10 a.m., and their

Introduction

entrance and walk on the path of love created an explosion of devotion and induced a desire for an encounter with the Lord. Though invisible to the eye, the immense energy of love and warmth could be felt. In His subtle body, Sathya Sai Baba headed towards the devotees, taking their letters, giving advice and, in His divine manner, confirming or revealing the subtle, fundamental truth, “Yes, it is Me again, your Swami!”

The programme began with words of welcome. Mrs. Karla Gaspar, Treasurer of the Ananda Trust welcomed Swami, His following and the guests from 18 countries.

Indian Ambassador to Croatia, Sri Sandeep Kumar addressed the gathering next and pointed out that this is not only a cultural and religious gathering, but a multi-cultural and multi-religious gathering, which reflects the message of Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

After uplifting talks by Mr. Isaac Tigrett, Sri C. Sreenivas and Sri B. N. Narasimha Murthy, the much awaited divine discourse of Bhagawan Baba was conveyed by Baba’s student, Sri Madhusudan Naidu, whom He has chosen as His humble and pure instrument.

Just like the biggest celebrations at Prasanthi Nilayam often served prasadam, this most exalted celebration served 1,500 lunches and various cakes to the devotees.

The evening programme was reserved for song and music, choir and musicians. A large international choir of 80 devotees, led by conductor Ume, united everybody in the hall.

An evening of ragas and jazz began with the magical sounds of the trumpet, trombone,

keyboard and bass; a performance of fine musicians brought together by Andrija Bosanac, who wanted to gift His teacher with ‘Devi Bhavani Ma’ and ‘Chitta Chora’ bhajans in a smooth jazz performance. Dhroeh Nankoe’s voice turned it into a memorable performance and he received a standing ovation.

Bhagawan then gave His evening divine discourse and allowed devotees to ask questions.

After the conclusion of the programme, the air was filled with immense love and oneness, and a wish and hope that Bhagawan would return to Croatia again, very soon – this time, with a special purpose to lay the foundation stone for the Ananda Ashram.

Swami, we thank You for the divine visit. We love you very much! We are Yours; You are ours. We are One!

Mrs. Karla Gašpar Welcome speech

Mrs Karla Gašpar welcomed the gathering and thanked Bhagavan profusely for His Divine presence in Zagreb. She said: „Our greatest strength lies in surrendering to His will, and that is the love that permeates all creation. Only love can change the world. Bhagavan says, I detached myself from myself so I could love myself, now we are His body, now we are responsible for creating the future of the world which should be governed by the only law worthy of man, and that is Love All, Serve All. Love is the role and mission of avatars.“

Words do not carry the same subtle meaning even among people who speak the same language. Words are not enough to convey what we feel. This is why Swami puts so much emphasis on the truth that for mankind “there is only one language - the language of the heart”.

Over 1200 devotees from 18 contries were present, like Austria, Geemany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Netherland, Portugal, Hungary, Czech republik, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India etc.

Mrs Vesna Krmpotić who has written more then 100 books on Bhagavan in Croatia was amidst the audience.

This also brings me to the main point: this is about truth; this is about peace; and this is about – we heard it many times today – love. These three symbols are embodied most of all, in my view, by all of you who have travelled to be a part of this event from 18 different countries, and who reflect the positive energy in this room. I am very touched by your passion, devotion and interest.

I wish this event all success, and I would like to say that the Indian Embassy in Croatia stands fully committed to help all your projects to the extent possible. You have my personal greetings, and greetings from the government of India. Jai Hind! Thank you! Hvala lijepo!

Dobro došli! Dobro jutro! Govorim malo hrvatski. Next time this year, I promise to speak in the Croatian language. First and foremost, I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to the organisers of this event with participation of more than 1,200 people representing 18 countries.

This is not about religion, this is about multi-religion; this is not about culture, this is about multi-culture; about the universality of the way of life; about balance, and I would like to say that India represents a balance. On one hand, we have the very profound Indian philosophy, traditions, the Vedas, and on the other hand, we have science and technology, economic development and medical and education systems. One provides us with sustainability in life, and the other provides us the avenues for prosperity and economic development of the country and the people. This is best embodied by the speakers that we have today: Sri Madhusudhan, Sri Srinivas, Sri Murthy and Mr. Tigrett who have, as we heard, embodied selflessness, giving up all that they had for the larger good and welfare of humans and the welfare of society. I acknowledge that contribution with utmost humility and offer my highest salutations.

Mr. Branimir Gonan

Dr. Branimir Gonan reflected on Vedas. The Vedas are the breath of God, the sound of Veda is śabda brahman.

Our knowledge is limited, but with our own experience we witness the greatness, beauty, bliss and the healing power of the sound of the Veda. It is said that first man chant the mantra. Then mantra chant man and lastly - mantra chant mantra. So first, we put an effort to learn the mantra, then the mantra has its effects on us and at the end - we become this mantra itself!

What we are witnessing with our own experience, more and more is acknowledged by modern science. Sanskrit is the only language for pronunciation of which we use all the nerves and muscles of speech apparatus. Researches has shown that reading, speaking and chanting the Sanskrit stimulates many energy points in the body.

As a result, blood circulation is improved and the blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar are balanced.

Furthermore, the body’s resistance to disease is increased, it calms the mind and relieves stress. Some schools, which in its curriculum have Sanskrit as a subject, noticed that learning of the Sanskrit improves neurological functions of the brain and stimulates memory. These pupils/students are more successful than others in the class.

Everyone goes to guru and wants his mantra, which will enlighten and raise their consciouseness. Swami gave a mantra for all the devotees, quoting it since He was 14 years old. It is only three words: “I am God.” It is so important that you see God in others and in yourself. Believe in God; belive in phenomenon such as this, which does not come from the mind, but from the heart. Teach your mind to trust your heart.

Mr. Isaac Tigrett

Many years ago, in the early 1970s, I went to Prasanthi Nilayam with a friend. When we arrived there, my friend broke down, because he couldn’t even enter the ashram. As a result, I was very upset through my entire visit. A week later, when I returned to London, my secretary met me at the airport and said, “I have just rented you a new flat this morning and signed the lease.” We went into the flat. I was still upset with Swami for not seeing my friend. I sat on the chair and all of the sudden, a letter was put through the front door. There was a roughly-bound package with some raw string, addressed to me, though I had only taken lease of the apartment that morning. The package came from India! It had been mailed two weeks earlier. I opened it and found a book from the Sathya Sai Book Trust. Inside the book, underlined in red ink, it said, “No one sees an inch of My robe unless I have willed it.”

As I look at crowd, I see 1200 individual journeys – no two alike. One of the things we have difficulity in beliving in is that we are divine beings. The church actually considers it sacrilegious. Yet, Swami’s continuous message since the begining is, “You are all divine beings.”

Page 10: Divine Discourses By Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba In …ananda-trust.org/media/attachments/2017/03/20/2016_04_croatia... · Divine Discourses By Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. In the

of life is to recognise the Divinity that embodies us. Whatever problems we face in the world, the solution comes with the realisation that each of us, irrespective of colour, caste, economic status, nation, religion – whatever the difference – if we are Divine, that is the beautiful thread of love common among us.

Swami then left with us a third sentence, “Expansion is My life.” Swami lived every moment of His life in love that expanded itself. Wherever anybody suffered or experienced hardships in any part of the world, where people faced the strife of turmoil, He felt that deep need and assuaged and alleviated the suffering, to bring peace and happiness to many lives. He was verily the expansion of life.

From this moment, let Swami’s love be our forms. Let the truth that you and I are essentially divine become the breath of our lives. Finally, let us make our lives expand – reach out, embrace, engulf everybody with the true spirit of love and the truth that everybody is inherently Divine.

Sri C. Sreenivas

The first song Swami wrote in English goes, “Love is My form.” If, out of 365 days in the year, and out of all the countries in the world, Swami chose to be here in Croatia with you today, it shows the enormous confidence He has in the citizens of Croatia. Only when there is need for development and progress, does the hunger within us as individuals, as a society, and as a nation result in a greater contribution to the world. If love could, in greater measure become our forms, you would with me that the need of the moment and of the world, is love. Nothing is more powerful, more conforting, or more beautiful than love, and its practice.

The second sentence in the song is, “Truth is My breath.” The great message of Swami is the truth that we are essentially Divine. Day in and day out, Swami has been reminding us that the purpose

Eight years ago, a great American spiritual thinker, Dr. Stephen Ruppenthal, said, “India stands for hope in a world full of violence and despair. The fertile spiritual soil of India will bring forth a spiritual figure who will guide the world back into love, into peace, into mutual respect and caring for each other. That is how we will save this planet.” All of us have no doubt in our minds that the spiritual figure which India has brought forth for the world is Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Today, He is the spokesman for all prophets, messiahs and divine personalities, and He has come to save the world from destruction.

When I see so many wonderful faces, filled with love and devotion for God, I see a rare hope of a united world where there are no more wars, no conflicts of any kind. As people in this part of the world, which was ravaged by war for so long, you will understand the necessity of a peaceful world today. The only way we can dream of a warless world, the only way we can think of united mankind, bounded by love and compassion, is by listening to the voice of God, who is seated in the hearts every one of us, and also in the Subtle Form of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, who is going to speak to all of us.

Sri B.N. Narasimha Murthy

We are all here to share Bhagawan Baba’s love and compassion, so that we will come out of the labyrinth and the mess of worldly life, in which we have been captured for eternity. We have brought here our complexes, our strife, our problems, our sorrows to offer at the lotus feet of Bhagawan Baba and take back love, mercy, peace and love.

Dear Embodiments of Divine Atma!

Many tasty dishes were prepared and served to you this morning. To feed the hunger of devotion in your souls, great mantras from the Vedas have been chanted; songs have been sung with great devotion; and children have added colour to this food, which has been served. It has been futher embellished by the talks of the speakers. Everything was prepared and served well. A little salt is missing, which is what I am going to add, neither more nor less – just enough.

Naham manushyo na cha deva yakshahNa brahmana kshatriya vaishya shudrah

Na brahmachari grihi vanasthahAham sathya bodhakah

Sathyam shivam sundaram

(I am neither man nor God; I am not a demi-god; I am neither a brahmana, kshatriya,

Vaishya or shudra. Neither am I a householder nor a brahmachari;

I am the preacher of truth. My nature is truth, auspiciousness and beauty.)

You have heard from very renowned speakers just a while ago that, on this particular day, I decided to leave behind My mortal frame and to become one with My true divine nature. Just as the rain pours down on the earth and joins the streams and rivers, but ultimately merges into the ocean, God comes down, takes a human form and behaves like a human being only to teach the truth that all are Divine. Once He has finished His mission in the physical body of an Avatar, He sheds it and merges into His Divine Self. This has been true of all great saints, Avatars and messengers of the Lord in all the ages.

The body, which is made up of the five elements, must merge back into the five elements – there are no exceptions. It is as true for your bodies as it is for Mine. However, what remains behind is the truth of Divinity. The bottles may be different, of different shapes and sizes, of different colours and design, and accordingly, the water may take different colours, shapes or forms, but it is not the bottle that quenches the thirst – it is the water within which quenches your thirst. The divine

13

Atma that abides in each of your beings is the same divine principle represented by Swami, as well. Just as different bottles contain the same water, every body contains the same Atmic principle. This is the truth of Divinity that you must learn. Therefore, instead of asking everyone, “Who are you?” you should rather ask yourself, “Who am I?” Once you truly know that you are not the body, nor the mind, but you are the Atma, you will know the answer to this question, “Who am I?” Simultaneously, you will also know who the others are.

To preach this great truth, Avatars, messengers, saints and sages keep coming from time to time. They teach this truth in different ways, in different languages, through different customs and traditions, through different processes and rituals, in the form of different religions and on different lands, just like different schools teach the same subject in different languages and through different teachers. However, the syllabus of the subject that has been taught is the same. In a Croatian school, they will teach in the Croatian language; in an Indian school, they may use an Indian language; in an American school, they will use English; similarly, in a Japanese school they will use the Japanese language. The languages may be different, the shape and structure of the schools might be different, the timetable and the rules followed might be different, the language spoken and the teachers may be different – but, the subject taught is the same. A Japanese school will not teach its students that the sun rises in the west and sets in the east; a Croatian school will not that the sun rises in the south and sets in the north; similarly, a German school won’t teach teach that the sun rises in the north and sets in the south. All of them will teach the same truth that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

God teaches the same truth to all people, whatever their religion or faith. Instead of bothering about the structure, shape, rules and disciplines of the school, you must rather concentrate on the content that is being taught. Rather than bothering about the colour, shape and size of the glass bottle, you must focus on the water that finally quenches the thirst. Instead of being concerned about the silver, gold or steel plate you are eating from, you must concentrate on the food that is being eaten. The truth being taught by all religions is the same, but unfortunately, you are very good at repeating like parrots without understanding anything.

Today, they chanted mantras from the Vedas, the great ancient texts. The very word ‘Veda’ comes from the word ‘vid’, which means ‘to know’. Therefore, Veda is the knowledge that you must know. What is this knowledge the Veda is teaching? ‘Aham Brahmasmi’ – I am God; ‘Tat twam asi’ – this and That are the same; ‘Prajnanam Brahma’ – the Supreme knowledge is God. ‘Ayam Atma Brahma’ – I am verily God. These four great sentences or mahavakyas from the Vedas declare the truth that all are Divine. However, by merely repeating the name of the food that you like, be it chapati or rice, cake or sweet, your stomach is not going to be filled. Likewise, by simply reciting the mantras, you will not derive any benefit. Unless you eat, digest and assimilate the food, your hunger will not be satisfied. Similarly, by just chanting the mantras, your transformation will not happen; it will be only an exercise in gathering information. Tigrett said, “Are you chanting the mantra, ‘I am Divine; I am God?’” Yes, the first step is definitely to chant, but the realisation is more important.

There was a dim-witted boy who went to seek

deeksha, or knowledge, from his guru. He asked the guru to give him a mantra. The guru tried to teach him different things in different ways, but he was such a dim-witted boy that he could not remember anything! Finally, fed up with this boy, the guru told him, “You just remember one thing and that will be more than enough,” and he taught him, “Aham Brahmasmi – I am God.”

This boy learned ‘Aham Brahmasmi – I am God’, and keep on repeating it to himself, in case he forgot it. Then he went home and his father asked him, “Boy, you went all the way to the gurukula (school), to the teacher. What did you learn today?”

The boy said, “I have learned ‘Aham Brahmasmi’.”

The father was wonderstruck that his son had learned such a great truth, so he asked him, “What is the meaning of that?”

The boy said, “The teacher is God, because he said, ‘I am God’.”

The father said, “No, no! The meaning is not ‘the teacher is God’; the meaning is ‘I am God’.”

The boy shook his head as if he had understood everything. After a while, his uncle came by. When the uncle asked, “What did you learn in school?” the boy said, “Aham Brahmasmi.”

“What does that mean?” the uncle asked.

“It means father is God,” said the boy.

The uncle said, “No, no! It means ‘I am God’.”

“Oh… you mean to say the teacher is not God, the father is not God, but the uncle is God?” the boy asked.

The uncle said, “No, no! it means ‘I am God’.”

The boy replied, “That is what I am saying – ‘the uncle is God’.”

After much effort, when the boy did not understand anything, he gave up.

Simply by chanting, you will not achieve anything. Only when you understand and practice, will you benefit.

People say, “Swami is God,” and at the same time, “He is here, but He is not there,” or, “He

was alive, and now He is no more,” and, “He could be in this place and cannot be in the other place.” “He could be only like this and not any other way.”

On the one hand, you say He is God, but on the other hand you restrain Him; you put constraints on Him. That is all because of your narrow-mindedness and lack of understanding. You tend to see what you want to see with your limited vision; you tend to hear what you want to hear with your limited understanding; and you understand only as much as you have learned. Just by standing in India you cannot see Croatia, and an Indian who has never been outside of the country may not believe that Croatia exists. Either that person has to go all the way to see that Croatia exists, or a Croatian has to come to India to tell him that such a country exists. The same way, to know this truth that you are Divine, either you have to experience it for yourself, or learn from a guru who has already experienced it. Put complete faith in the guru’s words. Make every effort to learn and understand and reach the destination.

Today, 24th April, many people around the world are doing various acts of service. To commemorate this day, people are singing bhajans, distributing food to the needy, or clothes to those who do not have them – and in this way, they are trying to express their gratitude to Swami, who had come in their midst to teach them to give food.

When a student finishes his education at the guru’s feet, in accordance with the tradition of the gurukula system, though the student is not charged a penny all throughout his education, by the end of his studies, he must offer dakshina, or a gift, to the guru, without which the education is incomplete. What is

this guru daksina that devotees must offer to Swami? Beyond these acts of service to the poor and needy, which are external, the greatest guru dakshina that you can offer is to practice this truth that has been taught by Swami and become that truth. Just as rivers run into the ocean and merge with the ocean, man must merge in the Divine and become Divine. A guru or teacher’s greatest joy is when he sees his students learning what he has taught. If you have learned your lessons well and understood them, there is nothing greater than that which can give joy to Swami.

Many gurus complicate the whole subject and make it appear difficult. Many teachers take great delight in scaring students away by trying to tell them that the subject is very difficult and only a teacher like him can teach; or that the subject is not for everyone, but only for the most inteligent and skilled. However, that has more to do with the satisfaction of their own egos. The plain truth is that spirituality is simple. For a boy to be a boy is the easiest thing to do; for a girl to be a girl is the easiest thing to do; for a man to be a man is the natural thing to do; similarly, for a woman to be a woman is absolutely easy. If you tell a man to act like a girl, or a boy to act like a woman, it is going to be complicated.

You are already Divine; to be Divine is the simplest thing. Trying not to be Divine is complicated, because that is what you are not. What you are is Divinity.

I was speaking in Italy where many great monuments and buildings abound. They have great sculptures created by skilled artists – but, where did that statue within the stone come from? Is the statue coming from elsewhere to the stone, or was it already there in the stone? That is the question to be asked. The truth is,

become That, there is nothing else to become. Swami is that love, and true homage or gratitude to Swami is to live in that love. That is the greatest gift that you can give in return for all the love that Swami has shared with you. Simply celebrating the day by lighting a lamp, singing a few songs, talking a little bit about Swami or doing a bit of seva is not the right way of celebrating this day. Only when you have understood what Swami has taught, made efforts, practised and realised – that is when this day will find its fulfillment. Otherwise, it will be another date on the calendar, like so many others. It will mean nothing to anyone.

Today, Swami does not have a body; Swami does not have a form. You are Swami’s bodies; you are Swami’s form. It is through each one of you that He will reach out to others, and it is your responsibility, the primary duty, in fact, the very purpose of your lives, to carry this lamp of love that has been lit in your heart, protected from the winds of ‘I’ and ‘mine’, selfishness, and spread this light by lighting lamps of love in the hearts of others.

Those who have known, seen, and experienced Swami – the more fortunate – carry a greater responsibility of spreading this love to others

the statue was already present in the stone. All that the sculptor did was to remove that which was not the statue, and what remained was the statue. All you have to do is to remove that which is not Divine, and what finaly remains is Divine. What is Divine? Pure, selfless love is Divine. “Love is My form,” they sing.

Tigrett was talking about pure, selfless love without any expectations. The love that lives by giving and forgiving; the love that has love itself as its own reward; the love that does not even seek to be loved. For, loving itself is its greatest joy – it knows nothing but to love, and it sees nothing but love. Such love is divine love. Uncontaminated by any ‘I’ and ‘mine’, unpolluted by any sense of expectation, without any malice or dirt, is love that is free and not bound. Such love is expansive love, for it embraces all as its own; it does not differentiate between ‘mine’ and ‘others’ – the whole world is its own. That is the divine love that Swami represents, and that love has no birth, no middle, no death; no beginning and no end; no reason and no season. Such love alone is your true nature. Once you realise this for yourself, nothing else remains to be realised. Once you know this truth for yourself, nothing else remains to be known. Once you

who haven’t been as fortunate as you to have experienced it from Him directly. You have remained a student for long; now, you must graduate and become teachers. Assist Swami in spreading this message of love, not by talking but by doing; not by preaching but by being. That will be the greatest thing you can offer to your guru as a mark of gratitude for all that He has been for you.

The world should know Me through you. They must look at you and think, ‘If these devotees are like this, how must have been their Lord! If they are filled with so much love, what an ocean of love their Master must have been! If they are so kind and compassionate, what an embodiment of compassion their guru must have been!’ It is through you that I shall now be known, and I bless all of you.

This message is not only for the people seated here in this auditorium, or of this country, but to all My devotees all around the world and beyond. It is your most important duty now to live in accordance with the guru’s directions,

the guru’s love. That alone will give Me joy and nothing else. My abundant blessings are there for all of you; I am there in you, above you, below you, around you, behind you, within you. You be with Me, and find Me wherever you are; seek guidance from Me who is right within you. Tread this path fearlessly and selflessly, and reach the destination of the truth of your Divinity.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions in the afternoon session. You must all be wondering what made Swami hurry through this session by shortening the programme and speeches. The truth is, as I was walking around the hall, I noted that some devotees who came from far did not have time to have their breakfast. Though at that point of time, they were hungry for Swami, they are now hungry for food, and I am hungry too, because I am them; I am in them. So, have food early and come back in the evening for more. Then, you can ask questions and I shall answer them – but, ask questions that will benefit everyone. With this, I now bring this session to a close. All those who could not speak, can speak in the afternoon.

To organize an exhibition as a part of Global Artist Network was a challenge due to many unknowns and apparent limita-tions. Yet, to organize this exhibition it was a true pleasure, joy, learning and service (seva). I would like to thank to all who joined and helped. These arts will color walls of children’s hospitals in India, new ashram in Croatia and Muddenahalli. Endless Love and thanks to beloved Swami for His Love, support and all the blessings. About 1400 people were yet again gathered to bask in Swami’s love. As He entered the hall, about 80 ladies and men were already standing on stage, to offer specially composed songs to Bhagawan. While the Lord wanted the music programme to be continued within 30 minutes, the pure love and devotion with which the songs were rendered, encapsulated and engulfed every soul seated, made the Lord to extend by another 30 minutes. Bhagawan was immensely happy, and enjoyed the programme with much delight.

Mr. Borna Lulić

Prof. Borna Lulić reflected on Swami’s mission and origin of Croats. In the evolution of the soul which takes thousands and thousands of incarnations, it is a great mercy to be born at the time of the Avatar, the time of God’s descent into history, body, among people. And yet to know of You, to see You and be Your follower is the biggest grace a soul can experience during its evolution. It is a grace much greater than enlightenment and liberation alone. In fact, all beings in the universe will one day achieve self-awareness and union with God, but the people who have an opportunity to be in Avatar’s vicinity are rare and utmost blessed beings.

This is why this present moment is one of the most important and most sacred moments in the evolution of all of us here.Croats, before they came to this region, had had their own kingdom Harahvaiti on the premises of old Persia. Harahvaiti name was mentioned in numerous old records, even in the holy books of Avesta and there is much evidence in language, art and religion, that Croats inhabited the area of present-day Iran, where they had their own kingdom.

And now we come to the most interesting part because Persians replaced the letter ‘s’ from the Sanskrit with ‘h’. Therefore, the word Harahvaiti is actually a distorted form of the name Saraswati. And Saraswati are early Aryan people who migrated to southwest Asia, from India to today’s Afghanistan and and Iran after the river Saraswati dried up.

What you think is real may not be real; what you think of as unreal may be the reality; for what you can see may not be the truth; what you do not see is the greater truth. Only the One truly exists – God. This world is what truly does not exist.

Dear Embodiments of Love!

From ancient times, mankind has been constantly searching for the purpose of existence and the pursuit of the experience of happiness. Happiness is something that all beings desire. If you were to ask around, no one would say that they want to be sad. From morning until night, you make an effort to be happy and you look for this happiness all around you. Unfortunately, despite all your endeavours in the world, all your searching and efforts go in vain. Even if you think there is happiness and you try to experience it, it is only temporary. You think that this material happiness is real but, alas, it is only an illusion.

Like a child who always wants bigger and better toys, to become happier, you go on searching for happiness around the world.

Some think food will make them happy; instead of eating to live, they live to eat – but, soon, the food that tasted so good seems tasteless. For instance, if you ask a child, “Do you like ice cream?” there will rarely be a child who would say, “I do not like ice cream.” After one scoop of ice cream, he is happy, and when a second scoop is offered, he is still very glad to take it. Even when the third scoop is offered, he will not refuse it. However, when the fourth one is offered, he will think for a while, and when the fifth one is offered, he may not take it. By the time you offer the sixth one, he will be unable to take any more.

The same thing which gave joy a few scoops before, does not now taste so good. The desire and joy both disappear after a while. All joys of the material world are like this. You

go on moving from one object of pleasure to another, seeking joy and happiness: From a small house to a bigger one; from a small car to a bigger one; from a few friends to many; from small earnings to great wealth. In this way, you go on chasing happiness, but you never really achieve it – because you cannot get something which is an illusion. In a desert, one may experience the illusion of water and, due to thirst, go walking in the direction of the imaginary water. The further you go, the further the water recedes, for that water in the desert is only a mirage, not the reality. Even though you perceive water there and go on pursuing it, you are never able to get even a drop.

Happiness in this world is illusory and you go on chasing it like chasing a shadow. If you try to catch hold of an object’s shadow, you are not going to get the object itself. Only if you grasp the object itself, will you obtain it. The truth is, there is no happiness in the world. There may be pleasure – which changes into pain – but not happiness. Every being keeps swinging between the two extremes of pleasure and pain, pleasure and pain. One day, something favourable happens to you and you are elated; another day, something goes against your wishes and there is pain. Like day and night, pleasure and pain keep alternating. Only union with God is true happiness. Happiness that is changeless and eternal can be obtained only in union with the Lord.

You must try to achieve that happiness which does not change with time, place and circumstances. Today, I saw all the people on the stage singing so joyfully. For those few moments, you forgot that you are not in India but in Croatia. You forgot all your differences and felt the oneness of belonging to a single family. All the narrow boundaries of differences

were broken; for God you all became one – that is happiness. Even after many days have passed, when you remember this moment, being in My presence and singing for Me, the happiness will return to you. Even the memory of this moment will bring happiness to you; this happiness remains forever.

Happiness is union with God. How do you become united with God? Being changeless, being detached, being always in the state of peace are the qualities of God. This is what is known as ‘samadhi’. ‘Dhi’ is the state of your mind; ‘sama’ means equanimity. Always being in the state of equanimity is samadhi. People say that I attained samadhi. Is it something that I needed to attain? I have always been in a state of equanimity and, thus, always in a state of samadhi. If you really want to commemorate the 24th of April, then every day is to be commemorated, because there was never a day when I was not in the state of equanimity. The passing clouds of pleasure and pain, losses and gain, praise and blame, cannot affect Me.

This is the true nature of happiness. A person who is always thinking of God, always in the presence of God, will always be happy. Whether people praise him or blame him, harm or help him, he will not be affected. This is the state that you must all strive to attain – and this comes to you only when you are detached. Equanimity is possible only when you have tremendous faith in the Lord; when you believe that whatever happens to you happens by His will and that He is aware of everything you experience. As He has created day, He has created night; as He has created darkness, He has created light and, thus, as He creates pleasures, so He creates pains. These are just passing clouds,

not permanent. Only the happiness that comes from union with God is permanent. Fill your hearts with this kind of happiness and remain unaffected in all the ever-changing circumstances around you. Be steady in your faith and your acceptance of the Lord’s will. Then, nothing is going to affect you and you will always be full of happiness.

I do not have much to say because, in your songs, you have said everything that I wanted to say. You are all learned students, so you do not need to be taught more, for you know the truth as you have sung today. All it needs is constant practice. Just as you eat every day, you sleep every day and you breathe constantly, so you should constantly be in the state of happiness by practising the truth that you, yourself, have sung. Practice is the key to happiness, otherwise it will be simply like looking at food, talking about food or hearing about the food, but not eating it.

Since many of you have to return to your own places, you can ask questions, if you have any, so that you can share knowledge with each other. Together you learn, together you grow.

Question 1: There is a lady named Catherine Kapahi (who has channelled many books about Bhagawan Baba). Swami, please explain to us her role or connection with Your light body.

Swami: There are many radios through which the same song can be heard. It is the same sun that shines in all water bodies around the world. It is the same knowledge which is taught by the many teachers and many schools. In the same way, I have many instruments to do My work. Not only one lady, or boy, or man – all of you are My instruments in some way or

another and you all have a role to play in My mission. Just like the rest of you, she has a role to play. If one person can experience and listen to God within, so can everybody else. All it needs is to be tuned always to the station of God; to be constantly thinking of God and nothing else and then you become a flawless instrument in the hands of the Lord and you can be connected to God all the time. Just as, in a class, there are many students who are learning, but some work hard and excel, whilst some do not make enough effort, so they struggle. Though the teacher is the same, the students’ achievements will depend on their efforts. So, if one student can pass the exam, everybody else can, too. People like that are examples of such instruments. Like them, I have many mouths through which I speak, many hands through which I serve, many feet through which I walk and many hearts through which I love. Everyone’s mission is to become a flawless instrument in the Lord’s hands and to inspire others to do the same. That is her mission, too.

Question 2: Dearest Swami, can you please tell us something about the origin of the old Slavenic writing that is called Glagoljica? it uses a special type of letters.

Swami: At the very beginning of Creation, there was no language. Man, when born into Nature, looked around in awe, in wonder of how beautiful, how perfect, Nature was. If Nature, the Creation, is so beautiful, how wonderful must be the Creator? The very first emotion that arose in man was that of devotion to God. The feeling from within to express one’s joy, one’s love, one’s gratitude to the Lord, gave birth to thought. Thoughts arose in man’s mind and when he wanted to express them to others, there came sounds. It

was the emotions that took form as thoughts, which then transformed into sounds. So, for a long time, there was no written language, only sound, through which people communicated with each other. In fact, until a few centuries ago, gurus would transmit teachings to the students only verbally. There were no books; the only transmission of knowledge was by the guru reciting and the students repeating. The people were so pure and their minds were so keen that they could grasp anything in one go. Whatever was said and repeated once, would stay in their memories forever, for people lived in a constant state of purity and had no negative thoughts in their minds. However, as time passed and worldliness grew, even students who were supposed to be the purest – dedicated to the Lord – were affected by the things around them. Their minds became weaker with the passage of time and they were not able to remember everything. Eventually, they wanted to pass on their knowledge to the next generation, so they devised the methodology of symbols, signs and written language. That is how written languages have emerged.

The earlier languages and alphabets were very similar to the objects in the nature around. There were circles and arcs like the moon and the sun, triangles like mountains, lines like rivers and dots like raindrops. Actually, each symbol was not just an alphabetical letter, but a whole sentence in itself – a thought represented by one sign – and, with very few such symbols, much could be conveyed. As time passed further, there was continuous deterioration in mankind’s intellect and more and more such symbols and letters emerged. Humanity did not start in one place in the world and spread everywhere – civilisations emerged in four different places. Each of them developed a language and a written script for themselves. They had different ways of writing, different ways of expression, according to the place, circumstances and time to which they belonged. Then, slowly, with changes in circumstances, people migrated, met new people and developed different languages so that they could understand each other.

So, to summarise, there were primarily

on the African side as Egyptians, on the European side as Greek, on the Asian side as Dravidians and on the Eastern side as Mongolians. All the world is nothing but the combination of all these, so when the Greeks mixed with the Dravidians, the Aryans came about; similarly, with many other civilisations, languages and alphabets. If you study deeply, you will find many similarities between languages.

Question 3: First of all, thank You for helping me many years ago when I was in a crisis, having lots of problems. Now, as I am advanced in age and have health problems, please guide and protect Me, Swami.

Swami: My protection is always there. Believe it is there; don’t keep doubting. Once I have said I will protect, I will always protect.

Once, a man wanted to cross a forest. He prayed to Lord Krishna to help him. Krishna said to him, “You proceed in the front and I

four civilisations, four languages and four alphabets. As migrations began across the planet, due to the need for food, shelter, water and another resources, the original four civilisations began interacting with each other and many more combinations came about. One civilisation was in Africa, one was in the Far East, one was in Asia and one was in part of Europe. These civilisations featured the four genetic types of people you see in the world today. There were people with brown skin, some darker than others; then there were people with reddish-brown skin; those with pinkish-white skin and those with yellowish-white skins. As people moved, interacted and lived with each other, many more colours, creeds and races came about. Similarly, with the exchange of languages, new spoken languages and alphabets developed and new civilisations came emerged.

That is the origin of all languages and civilisations in the world. In modern times, you study those

will follow. I will be there all the time. I will be there, right behind you, to protect you.”

As the man started to cross the forest, he had tremendous faith that Krishna was right behind him. However, after he walked a few steps, he heard the growling of a tiger and grew afraid. He thought, ‘What if Krishna is not behind me? What if He is not there and this tiger attacks me?’ Many such doubts entered his mind. So, to check if Krishna was behind him, he turned around, but he could not see Krishna behind him. He became very scared and, when he returned to the village, was so upset with Krishna that, as he entered His temple, he said, “You told me that You would be right behind me, but when I turned around, You were not there!”

Krishna answered, “Foolish man! When you turned around, I moved to stay behind you – so I was always behind you, but you could not see Me!”

Just the same, when I have said I will protect and I will guide, I will always do so. Do not look back again and again for Me, for once I have said I will be there, I will be there and I will guide.

Question 4: When the soul has the yearning, but the mind plays its tricks, what can and should one do?

Swami: Life is a game, play it. Life is a challenge, meet it. When two teams play football, they each want to put the ball into the other’s goal. The opposing team will try to stop it from happening. That is the game. If you expect there to be no opponent and that you, alone, should play the game, that is no game. If you, alone, want to kick the ball and nobody should come between you and the goal post, it is not

going to happen. This is the rule of any game – there have to be two parties; one who is going to try to score the goal, and another who is going to oppose it.

The goal of your life is to reach your divine destination and the team that you belong to is the heart, which helps you go towards your destiny. The opposing team – mind, knowledge and the senses – try to obstruct it. Just like a good footballer, who develops skills to outmanoeuvre his opponents, by constantly practising and perfecting his skills to get to the other goal in spite all his opponents – you have to develop the skill of constantly using your heart and outmanoeuvring your mind. It may not happen the very first day, but the constant practice of following your heart and avoiding your mind will help you to, one day, reach your goal. Failure is not dishonour, but not trying is definitely not honourable. Therefore, go on trying; God is present as your coach and He will tell you how to do it. Listen to His wise advice, practise your game and reach your goal. This is the game of life – the game between heart and mind. The more you practise, the better you will do. Whatever number of times the mind obstructs you, you will still reach the goal. This is what you should do when your mind comes in your way.

Question 5: Thank You so much, Swami. How do we defeat and overcome laziness?

Swami: The entire world has been created as a combination of three gunas, or characteristics: tamo guna is the tendency toward lethargy or laziness; inertia, as found in stone and matter; then there is rajo guna or the trait of action – you find plenty of it in animals; and then there is sattva guna or the pure, balanced tendency – the divine quality found in humans.

26

As creation evolved from matter to man, a little bit of tamo guna, rajo guna and sattva guna, all three, became a part of every human being. So, every man is little bit stone, a little bit animal and a little bit Divine. Depending on the proportion of these gunas in each person, his nature can be defined. Some people have more tamas, some have more rajas, some have more sattva, but know that every person is a combination of all three. For if you do not have any tamo guna, you will not be able to sleep at night; it is that inertia or quality of sleepiness that arises from tamo guna – but, if you have too much tamas, then you will sleep all the time, like Kumbhakarna (the brother of Ravana). Everything has to be maintained in a certain proportion for good living. You must conquer tamas with rajas and control rajas with sattva guna.

It can be compared, very simply, to a vehicle, a driver and his master. A vehicle, by itself, will not move; it is inert. When the driver gets in, he can start it and take the vehicle wherever it is ordered. When the master is in the car, he can guide the driver where to go. Similarly, sattva

guna, which is the quality of the heart, should be the master. Rajas, which is the characteristic of the mind, should be the driver, and tamas which is the characteristic of the body, should be the vehicle. So if the vehicle has to move, the mind – the driver – has to start it, but a mad driver, or a disobedient driver, can cause accidents. The mad driver or disobedient driver should be controlled by the master of the car. Laziness keeps postponing things – what you have to do now, you want to put off until tomorrow. When tomorrow comes, again you say, ‘Tomorrow,’ and this tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, goes on and on.

At that point, you have to take control of your mind. Laziness is rust and dust and it is not going to help you reach your destination if the car is just standing where it is. You must remind yourself of the purpose of your existence; that, if you are to reach your divine destination, the car must move. The driver of the mind must start it and move it – but move it in the right direction in accordance with the guidance of the master. If you continuously remind yourself that, without effort, you cannot reach

your destination and that time that has gone will never come back, you will be careful not to waste it.

For tamasic people, rajas or the quality of action, is important; they need to have a sharp, active mind. Those who have too much rajas have to be under the control of the divine qualities of the heart. So, from inaction you must get to action – action without any expectations – it should be purely on love for God. This is the way you must proceed. Laziness is rust and dust, realisation is rest and best. Do not devote yourself to matter, when you are born as the highest order of Creation – mankind. After very many births and deaths – the circle of life – you have evolved from inert matter to a human being, the crown jewel of Creation. How stupid it would be to behave like something less. Amongst all beings, human birth is the rarest. There are so many beings craving for a human body, so that they can work out their salvation. Of the 84 lakhs (8.4 million) of species, human birth is the rarest and most sacred. How unfortunate it would be if, after having been granted such a rare and precious human birth, you behave like an animal – or worse, just as a piece of rock! Remind yourself of your purpose. Only a man with a goal will move forward; a man without a goal will remain just where he is. You are born with a goal, a purpose, and the purpose is realisation. Make the effort!

Question 6: How soon will the time come when we all feel betterment in our mental health, physical health and emotional health, in this existence?

Swami: For you or for everyone?Devotee: For everyone.

Swami: As soon as you take the medicine and

follow the diet, it will happen. If you go to a doctor and ask for good health, he is going to give you medicine and prescribe a diet to follow. If you keep the medicine and the diet list in your pocket instead of following it, how are you going to be cured? Though you have consulted the doctor, even if you have learned what you need to do and bought the medicine as prescribed, if you do not use it, it is not going to cure you. The moment you start using it, you will feel better.

So, it is not as if, all of a sudden, everybody will feel the same; whoever follows the advice will benefit. Truly, all the diseases of the world are only one disease – the disease of bhava roga – worldliness; believing in the body and mind and always looking after the comforts and needs of the body and mind. The mind and the body are the disease of the world, starving the soul. You know how cancer occurs – the bad cells take away all the nutrition from the good ones and keep on growing without limit. Because the good cells are starving, they diminish and die. In the same way, all your energy and efforts go into feeding your body and mind – just like the growth of cancerous cells.

The feeling of ‘I’ and ‘mine’ – ego and attachment – feeds the body and mind, and all your energy and efforts are only directed towards the growth of your body and comfort of your mind. Spiritual well-being suffers, as a result. The day you stop feeding your body and mind with the feelings of ego and attachment and start giving attention and energy to your soul; that day, the cancer of body and mind will stop and the soul will be healthy. That day, all your diseases, worries, anxieties and fears will end. I have prescribed the medicine of love and the diet of service. Love and service together will help you get rid of disease. Love without

service is of no effect. Service without love is of no service. There must be both love and service and, just as different patients are affected with different diseases and need different dosages of medicine, similarly, those who are more afflicted, those who are more diseased, need to give more love and more service. Until then, you should go on taking the medicine and follow the diet until you are completely cured of the disease of worldliness and your spirit is healthy. The mind is the cause of one’s liberation or bondage. It is the key to happiness or sorrow. Turn the mind towards the world and sorrow results. It becomes trapped, locked into worldliness. Turn it towards God and the lock is opened – you are freed. Therefore, put all your thoughts, energy and efforts into making your soul healthy and your heart healthy, and give less attention to your body and the mind. When you love selflessly, feeling that all are one – because you are all the same spirit – and serve everyone selflessly, with the feeling that you are not serving ‘somebody else’ but serving your own Higher Self, the

Embodiment of Divinity in the other person, too, very slowly, attachment to the body and the mind will diminish. Follow these two practices and you will be cured. When the soul is healthy, the body and the mind will also be healthy. Therefore, work on your spiritual health, and mind and body will follow. One who follows this will benefit.

Question 7: Swami, can You tell us something about ‘perfected men’, who are, in the Theosophical tradition of the western world, known as ‘Masters of Wisdom’? What is their connection to You, particularly in the present time?

Swami: The connection between Me and the perfected yogis, masters and messengers is the connection between the principal and the teachers of the school. God runs the Universe as a university; He who started it, to promote the knowledge of the Self, does not always come to teach in the classes, though

He administers and manages the whole affair, just like a principal. He has teachers who go to teach the subject to the students. He entrusts them with the great responsibility of spreading the wisdom of the Self, but His teachers are not just preachers – they are people who teach through what they practice.

Mankind are the students, with different people in different classes, according to their level of knowledge and understanding. So, there is a primary level, high school, college and various classes. For each of these classes, according to the needs of the child, God sends the right kind of masters to teach them. As I said this morning, all the various religions, philosophies and faiths are nothing but various schools teaching the same subject, but in different languages and with different rules – they are all the branches of the same university, which is managed by God.

To Me, the perfect teacher is one who teaches by perfect practice. To Me, perfection is the state of selflessness – one who is selfless is perfect. Every word that is selfless is a perfect word; every thought that is selfless is a perfect thought; and every action that is selfless is a perfect action.

So, the teachers who embody perfection are all chosen by God to go to different schools and teach different students, based on their understanding and evolution. That is how you are all connected. Just as a principal, once he has entrusted the teacher with the class, would not come and interfere, God does not interfere. Many people think, ‘There are so many great masters around the world who are so devoted to God. Why do they not know about Sai Baba? When Sathya Sai Baba had come as an Avatar, why is that so many masters and gurus did

not come to pay their obeisance to Baba?’ That is all your imagination with your limited understanding. A student may not always get to see the principal; confined to his class with the its teacher, nevertheless, the teacher and the principal are always connected. They meet often to discuss the work and seek guidance from the principal. Therefore, do not limit your thinking to just ‘Masters and their bodies’ and ‘Swami and His body’. You are all connected at a much deeper divine level. It is the same Divine that exists in each of them, by which they are guided and through which they teach – and what do they teach? To become the divine nature that is already there within you; to help you to restore what you truly are and get rid of what you are not. That is why complete education is Educare; to bring out what is latent within you, which is your own Divinity. You are all connected and working together, like various schools and teachers, but there is only one principal. That is how it is.

Question 8: I was unable to study in my own country and had to go to Germany. I am now studying in Germany, but I went through many unpleasant experiences. I would like to finish my studies and work for You, Swami, at least serve You, because I got so much from You.

Swami: All those who yearn to serve Me will definitely get an opportunity – but, to serve anyone, not only Me, you need both ability and purity. Purity without ability is useless in serving Me and ability without purity is dangerous. Take, for instance, when you are in a hospital and need a surgeon to operate. A doctor wanting to operate is not enough; he needs the skills to operate, too, otherwise, think of the fate of the patient – instead of helping, he may end up harming.

Therefore, once you develop your abilities and are ready as My instrument, I will pick you up at the right time. Until then, think of Me in each person you meet and serve Me in whatever little way you can. Serving Me does not mean only serving in the institutions built by Me, under My name. All the good that is there in the world belongs to God. A kind word to someone; patiently listening to somebody; being there for people in time of despair and distress; helping them with what little things you can – all these are ways to serve Me.

Do not limit yourself to only certain institutions, or certain places – you can serve Me everywhere, in every way. I know that you already serve; for instance, if nothing else, you are a very good listener and will listen to all your friends and other people and help them to pour out their hearts. Whether or not you have any other knowledge or any other skill, this is something valuable you can do to serve. The problem starts when you start speaking and others have to listen. As long as you listen, you serve.

Question 9: Swami, what is the significant difference between ‘grace’ and ‘blessing’?

Swami: Grace is there for all, as the sun shines for all. However, the one who uses it is the one who is blessed. Grace is there for everyone equally; it does not differentiate one from another. It is there for all to use, equally – but,

when you make the effort to utilise grace, then you may consider yourself blessed.

For those who sleep when the sun has risen, it is still night and it is not going to benefit them. Blessed are those who utilise grace to grow and develop into their divine nature. It is only a play of words – grace is there for all, but you are truly blessed when you use it; otherwise, it is like rain that falls on rock and is wasted. Only when rain falls on fertile soil, which has been tilled, weeded and sown with seeds, will it bring forth a crop.

With this, it is time to close this programme but, whatever you have in your heart, know that I

reside in your heart. Deep down, it is Me alone who lives there, who can speak to you and clear your questions. So, ask Me, who is there within each one of you. All knowledge, all wisdom, everything is there within you. Connect to Me, deep within yourself and seek guidance. Seek guidance for all that you do in your life. The problem is, although I am there by your side, ever ready to help you and to guide you, you do not ask Me for guidance at all! Like a good teacher, I wait for you to ask Me – and when you have done it your way and you have done it all wrong, you ask Me – in sadness. Then I guide you and you correct things. Had you asked Me, instead, in the very first place, would you have

gone wrong at all? So, whatever it may be, whether small or, as you may think, a big decision, ask for guidance from within and trust the inner voice – which is Me – and I will guide you from within, as I have guided millions of people in the past and continue to do so now.

My blessings are there and My grace is there, in abundance, for all of you. Make the effort to utilise this opportunity well and do not let it go to waste.
