1. Why are industrial clients particularly interested in resource recovery solutions?

Water is critically important for businesses in any industry sector.

It takes five to 15 liters of water to rinse a microchip, 8,000 liters of water to assemble an automobile, and 11,000 liters of water to produce one metric ton of steel.

Rising energy prices and pressure on water resources have raised the economic stakes surrounding water management and treatment.

Increasingly stringent environmental pollution regulations are forcing a growing number of industrial clients to choose recycling and/or recovery options for their production processes.Recovery and/or recycling is an attractive solution for more than one reason: it helps industrial clients minimize the environmental impact of their products, save on the cost of waste disposal, and either produce energy at a lower cost or recover high-value materials (potash, phosphorus etc.) that can be injected into their processes or resold on markets where prices continue to rise steeply.Yet another sign of the times: Total—for whom water treatment and saving water during its oil production process are major issues—has taken a minority stake in the California company NanoH20, specialized in desalination membranes and already one of Veolia Water’s technology partners.

2. Which flagship technology solutions help Veolia Water meet these expectations?

Through its subsidiary Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, the company has a unique portfolio of 350 proprietary technologies that help design custom solutions to meet the increasingly complex industry challenges in terms of waste treatment, recycling and recovery, and energy efficiency.In a wide range of fields, our expertise is being chosen by an increasing number of manufacturers, generating a total turnover of €650 million, an increase of nearly 24% compared with the first half of 2011 (taking account of exchange rates and scope).Among the most popular proprietary technologies, HPD crystallization and evaporation processes separate liquids from solids in effluents in order to recover valuable materials they contain. HPD is a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies based in Spain and the United States.With 800 facilities using HPD’s evaporation and crystallization technology in 30 countries (including Spain, Brazil, Indonesia and New Zealand), Veolia Water is considered one of the world’s three leading players in this technology. 3. What is at stake in the Iberpotash contract in Spain?Iberpotash, a Spanish subsidiary of ICL Fertilizers, produces potassium fertilizers (one million metric tons of red potash a year) from an ore extracted near Súria in the Barcelona region, the largest deposit in Europe. It has chosen a unit using the HPD process, enabling it to recover 750,000 metric tons of food-grade and chemical salts (used primarily for salting roads) and 50,000 metric tons a year of white potash—excellent news for the company, particularly in a global potash market that has grown by 50% since 2009. Furthermore, as increasing global population growth puts pressure on agriculture, demand for fertilizer increased from 31 million metric tons in 2009 to 61 million in 2011.Designed as a fully closed loop, the installation—which is slated to be brought on-stream in 2014—will re-inject condensate and effluents into the system to eliminate any residual liquid and decrease the site’s environmental footprint.The contract includes process design, the supply of key equipment, engineering and construction management. The contract [internal communication only] is worth €60 million.

4. What other significant resource recovery and recycling contracts has Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies won?

Veolia Water’s Technologies subsidiary won eight major industrial contracts (each worth more than €10 million) in the first half of 2012, generating sales of €650 million, a figure that represents a 24% rise over the same period in 2011.

In addition to Iberpotash in Spain, the company signed a production water recovery and recycling project in Canada with one of northern Alberta’s biggest players in the oil sands industry. In 2011, the same client selected HPD evaporation technology to treat water used in the production process of 40,000 barrels per day (6,350 cubic meters per day).Two years later, it renewed its trust in Veolia Water with a contract for a similarly sized project in the same region. The new system will implement HPD processes for dealing with production water on-site and recover 20,500 cubic meters per day of treated water in the form of feed water for the site’s boilers. In brazil, Veolia Water also won another project for the production of fertilizers with the same HPD evaporation and crystallization technology. The contract was signed with the Brazilian company GDK for the petrobras (Fafen-SE) petrochemicals industry plant in the State of Sergipe (Nordeste Region) and involves basic engineering and equipment supply for the production of ammonium sulfate. The plant will use crystallization technology to produce 875 metric tons of fertilizer products daily using a reaction between ammonia and sulfuric acid waste from nearby refining activities.Also in Brazil, Petrobras has selected Veolia Water solutions to solve water supply problems and reduce waste at its petrochemical complex in Rio de Janeiro (Comperj). Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies will make this site the first Petrobras refinery to use treated domestic wastewater instead of water pumped from the nearby river.This project will be the largest refinery complex in the country, and Veolia’s innovative and comprehensive solution—including the production of demineralized water, condensate treatment, and the treatment and recovery of industrial effluents—was selected by the TUC consortium (Toyo Engineering, UTC Engenharia and Construtora Norberto Odebrecht), to which Petrobras has delegated responsibility for the utilities portion of the contract.

Veolia’s latest generation demineralized water production unit will be equipped with a reverse osmosis system with a total capacity of 980 cubic meters per hour and will also recycle 75% of the water supplied to Comperj.As for the site’s industrial effluents, Veolia has proposed a package of solutions and services designed to promote recycling and limit waste dumping. Some 500 cubic meters per hour of treated effluent can be reused directly in the refinery’s cooling system.This contract is worth €37 million. [Internal communication only]

5. What has Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies been doing in the municipal sector?

With total revenue (industrial and municipal contracts) of €1.86 billion in the first half of 2012, Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has been hard at work in the municipal sector as well.Among the energy recovery solution projects, in early 2012, OTV, a French Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies subsidiary, won a contract in Uganda to design and build a wastewater treatment plant in the capital, Kampala, and to stay on for three years of operation as the leader of a consortium with the Ugandan civil engineering companies CEMENTERS and ROKO.With a capacity of 380,000 population equivalent (45,000 cubic meters per day), the plant, which is currently under construction (total duration of this phase: 30 months), will use a “classic”wastewater treatment process, but will nonetheless rely on anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge to recover biogas and convert it by cogeneration to meet all of the site’s energy needs.The Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies (OTV) share of this contract is €35.6 million.
