Grammy award-winning recording artist, David Ball, will perform at Mercer Street Dance Hall June 25.

The event is a step forward for the Drip-ping Springs live music venue that has become well-known over the past two-and-a-half year for showcasing local and regional talent. The performance is one of only three stops on the band’s Texas tour.

Now a solo Nashville recording art-ist, David Ball began his professional music career in Austin as a member of the renowned Uncle Walt’s Band, widely acknowledged as the first Americana act.

His recording of “Riding with Private Malone” made it to #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 2001 and the title track from his platinum-certified al-bum “Thinkin’ Problem” was the top sell-ing country song of 1994. He has released seven other studio albums.

David won a Grammy Award in 1995 for his rendition of “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River)” on the compilation al-bum Beautiful Dreamer — The Songs of Stephen Foster.

In 1997, Bob Dylan invited David to join artists Jerry Garcia, Bono, Willie Nel-son and others to celebrate “The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute.” Later that year, David joined Bruce Springsteen on-stage at the Kennedy Center to sing a trib-ute to Dylan at his Kennedy Center Hon-ors award celebration.

David’s performance at Mercer Street Dance Hall will raise funds for Operation Troop Aid, one of his favorite charities, that sends care packages to deployed US troops. 100 percent of the sales of OTA merchandise that night will benefit the charity.

Since it opened just over two years ago, Mercer Street Dance Hall has brought a variety of live music to Dripping Springs, including country, bluegrass, Americana, Bayou, blues and rock. It hosts live mu-sic Thursday through Saturday nights,

and a Wednesday night Open Mic, which welcomes professional and hobbyist musi-cians to perform onstage using the hall’s great sound system.

Owners Nick and Gay Dotin renovat-ed a former barn in downtown Dripping Springs, finishing it out with old wood sid-ing, a large wooden dance floor, a full bar with local beers on tap, an outdoor patio area, a tree-shaded yard with picnic tables and “the cleanest restroom around” ac-cording to Nick.

“Mercer Street Dance Hall is my favor-ite new hall because it feels like an old one ‘cept - it’s cooler. It’s got good air condi-tioning!” says musician Doug Moreland, whose band, The Flying Armadillos, plays most Thursday nights and will open for David Ball.

FYI • Mercer Street Dance Hall is at 322 Mercer Street. For more information, call 512-858-4315 or visit the web site at www.mercerstreetdancehall.com, where you can also pur-chase tickets for David Ball’s show in advance.

Being firefighters, they do know a lot about smoke - in this case, smokin’ good barbecue! On June 6,

come enjoy a plate of fire-kissed fare at the Henly Volunteer Fire Department’s (VFD) Annual Barbecue, and help those volunteers help you during the next fire, flood or emergency.

Members of the Dripping Springs Cook Off Club (many of them also volun-teers for the VFD) will have their barbe-cue pits roaring at Fire Station 83 on Creek Road, cooking up their well-known and well-loved brisket and sausage.

Side dishes and condiments will be provided by the Henly VFD. A Silent Auction and live music by the Hill Coun-try Ramblers will keep diners busy be-tween bites. In case of rain, activities will be moved indoors to the fire truck bays.

Annual barbecue to benefit firefighters

sis for residents at Hill Country Care Nursing Home, just to entertain them,” says Alex.

“He sang old songs they remembered —he even cut their hair on occasion!” (Editor’s note: besides playing fiddle with Bob Wills, Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Paul McCartney, Conway Twitty, Lefty Frizzell, Ray Price and Asleep at the Wheel - Johnny Gimble spent a few years as a barber in Waco.)

Johnny once shared with Alex his two secrets to success in the music in-dustry. “First, play every chance you get. Second, get lucky!” Alex turns that around to say that it was Johnny who played every chance he got for a good cause in this town, “and we’re the ones who were lucky!”

“Johnny influenced every Western swing or fiddler player alive,” says Alex,

“and he did it all with a sense of humility and good humor. He always had a smile and a good joke to tell. One of his favor-ites, from back in his Bob Wills days, he alway used as a farewell: ‘Well, if I don’t see you in the future, I’ll see you in the pasture!’”

June 7 from 1 pm to 5 pm, family, friends and fans of Johnny’s are invited to gather in Luckenbach to swap memories and cel-ebrate Johnny’s life and music, says Dick Gimble, Johnny’s son. Daughter Cyndy, speaking on behalf of the whole family, asks that in lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Health Alliance for Austin Musi-cians would be appreciated.

FYI • A celebration of Johnny’s Gimble’s life and mu-sic will take place June 7, from 1 pm to 5 pm in Luckenbach. For more information, visit the web site at www.johnnygim-ble.com. Donations in Johnny’s memory can be made to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians at www.myhaam.org.

Last year’s event raised more than $4,000 to help volunteers get advance fire/EMS rescue training and buy addi-tional gear and tools to help with their dangerous work. This year’s event is ex-

pected to be even bigger and raise more funds for the firefighters.

The Henly VFD Barbecue is either in its 25th or 30th year - “depends on how you want to count it,” says Nancy Porter, secretary of the Henly VFD Board and Barbecue organizer. “The first one was held in 1978, at the old Henly fire station on Highway 290.”

The event was held (almost) every year after that and by the late ’90s was a huge affair serving over 1,000 plates of food cooked on built-in pits, she says.

When the Henly Station moved to its new location on Creek Road in 2000, many of the older volunteers retired, the built-in pits were left behind and the

know-how to put on the large event was lost, Nancy explains. In 2005, the new guard decided the tradition of the Barbe-cue needed to be resurrected and began to “figure out how to do it,” she says. “Every year it gets a little bigger — last year we served 400 plates and this year we expect even more.”

The Henly Station (Station 83) is one of six fire stations that make up the North Hays County Fire Rescue (NHCFR), serv-ing Dripping Springs, Henly and Drift-wood. NHCFR’S small corps of 20 full-time, professional firefighers is able to protect the 200-squre mile area with the support of more than 60 dedicated volun-teers, who spend hours each week train-ing and responding to emergencies.

The emergency crew is kept busy in all kinds of weather and conditions - fighting grass fires during droughts, per-forming swift water rescue during floods, putting out house fires and assisting with traffic accidents all the time.

Henly VFD president Mark Treadwell credits the success of North Hays County Fire Rescue to its volunteers. “They have been the lifeblood of this department throughout the years. Even with the ad-dition of full-time career firefighters, the volunteers continue to support their ef-forts and are always ready to serve the citizens and guests of North Hays Coun-ty,” he says.

The organization is expecting an ac-tive wildfire season this summer. Mark says the ample winter and spring rains have grown a thick stand of native grass-es that can quickly become large grass-fires in the summer heat. “Grass is a one-hour fuel,” he explains. “It can go from rain-soaked to burnable in a one-hour time span on a hot afternoon.”

FYI • The 25th (or 30th) annual Henly Volunteer Fire Department Barbecue is Saturday, June 6 from 10 am to 2 pm at Fire Station # 83, 7520 FM 190, ten miles west of Dripping Springs (.25 miles east of FM 165 on Creek Road). The event will go on rain or shine - ample parking will be available in the lot east of the fire station. Tickets are available now at Fire Station #71, 400 Sportsplex Drive and at the door the day of the event. For more information, find North Hays County Fire Rescue on Facebook, or call 512-858-4600.
