The City of Dripping Springs is co-sponsoring this year’s event along with Helping Hands, Inc., who receives 60 percent of its yearly operating budget from the annual fundraiser. With those funds, Helping Hands Food Pantry pro-vides 103,000 pounds of food to needy families in the community and provides a summer supplement program to hun-gry children that is an important source of nutrition during their school break.

Helping Hands distributed more than $34,000 in financial assistance last year for utilities, housing, transporta-tion, school supplies and holiday gifts through Project Elf. Empty Bowls Project was started in 1990 by high school art

ACROSS FROM BELTERRA

By LaureL robertson

In her eventful life, Allison Wilcox has had to learn how to unwind. Whether it’s recovering from a stressful day in

court serving as guardian for children in high-conflict divorce cases, fighting leukemia in her early 30s, or surviving 12 days lost at sea while she was five months pregnant, Allison has had sever-al opportunities to work out the unwind-ing issue.

Her best formula? Sitting with a girl-friend, a glass of wine, a ball of yarn and her knitting needles.

So, when she got the chance to open her own business this past summer, Al-lison thought “why not have a place where there’s someone to help you do that?” And the Sated Sheep was born.

Part fiber arts shop, part wine bar/beer pub, it’s 100 percent Dripping Springs originality at its best.

“I used to shop online for yarns, be-cause knitting shop owners could make me feel like an idiot,” she admits. “I think a lot of people feel intimidated. I created The Sated Sheep to be a place where you feel like staying. No one cares if you knit well!” she declares.

Allison learned to knit when her son was in Waldorf school, to help him learn that skill in the primary grades.

“Ages six to eight are a very good time to for kids to learn to knit,” says the Ph.D. psychologist. “Reseach shows that it helps develops sensory motor integra-tion at that age, a very important brain development. Knitting and crocheting also help stroke and brain injury patients create new cognitive processing - and it’s definitely calming,” she adds.

The clean, soothing lines of the mod-ern black-and-white interior are a serene backdrop for the brillant colors of yarn and fibers that fill the shop. A large center table, where knitting and crochet instruc-tor Carrie Au sits crocheting a shawl to-day, is the natural hub. Small tables off to the side offer quiet spots for needle work-ing and conversation.

The menu starts with Tazo teas and coffee drinks (they’ve got your latte!) and continues through European beers, inter-national wines and a selection of bubblies. There’s even port and Crubom Chocolate Boms (organic and healthy...) for serious unwinding.

The shelves and walls are lined with artisan yarns of every weight and mate-rial, from lacey to bulky, sourced from as far away as Uruguay, Indonesia, Britain, and Japan and as nearby as Bandera and Austin. Allison stocks an enticing array of tools of the trade, including knitting needles made from wood, metal and Kar-bonz. There are also unusual notions for finishing out knitting and crocheting proj-ects, such as buttons shaped like hedge-

hogs and John Deere tractors. Classes in knitting, crocheting and

felting are plentiful. Three instructors on a rotating schedule mean that there’s some-one in the shop Tuesday through Sunday to teach and answer questions.

Starting with beginning knitting and crochet classes, and continuing into sock and sweater knitting classes, there’s in-struction for every level, including special two-hour classes for children.

Drop-in help (5-35 minutes) is avail-able by the single visit or a four-session punch card; private lessons are available by appointment. Workshops and special events are scheduled frequently. Knit-alongs and quick questions/help are al-ways free.

DRIPPING SPRINGS H Bobbie Hentschel, president of the Friends of the Dripping Springs Library, announced that this year’s Pouring Over Books Sun-day, October 25, will feature a Western theme, including two past Poets Laureate, a Western art silent auction, and music from favorite local band The Hill Country Ramblers.

This is the Friends’ fifth annual fun-draising event to support the Dripping Springs Community Library.

Each year, guests gather at a different home or site – this year it’s the homestead Farmhouse at Dripping Springs Ranch Park. Those attending can enjoy compli-mentary refreshments and music, and the chance to hear from invited authors.

Tickets are $50 and are available now at the library and online.

Event director, John Hoag, says both this year’s featured writers are past Poets Laureate. Nathan Brown is Oklahoma’s immediate past Poet Laureate and Larry D. Thomas was 2008 Texas Poet Laureate. Both will read selections from their work, talk about their writing and lives, and an-swer questions from the audience.

The Western-themed silent auction will feature four signed, limited edition

prints by renowned artist R. Scott, donat-ed by local benefactor Judy Johnson, plus donated items from local businesses, in-cluding Ranch to Runway, Tractor Supply and Valli and Kim Quilting.

Sample a flight of complimentary Western wines and enjoy light Western food fare, while enjoying music by the Hill Country Ramblers.

Noted local historic author Marshall Kuykendall will introduce the two guest writers, and all three will be available for book signings. Bill Paige of KDRP will emcee.

Hoag would like to thank the event’s founding sponsors, Scott Daves of Stan-berry Associates and Gavin Loftus of Edward Jones, for ensuring that “all ad-ditional proceeds from the event go 100 percent to support the library.” Other sponsors for this the event include 3 Wire Electric, Arrowhead Ranch, HEB, Whim Event Rentals, David Young Books and Skip and Dominique Levens.

Sponsorships are still available. FYI • For more information about the event or the

Friends, email [email protected]. Friends of the Dripping Springs Community Library has served Dripping Springs since 1983 and has been a 501c3 nonprofit orga-nization since 1998.
