Sure - they pull together one of the largest and best collections of classic cars, motorcycles, hot rods and trac-

tors in the state. Absolutely, they cook up some of the most mouth-watering tasty barbecue chicken, pork, brisket and beans on the planet.

And who has come up with a better way to spend a summer day than pitching washers under giant oak trees, splashing in a clear-running creek and playing out-door games with kids?

But be aware that behind all the fun and festivity of the Hill Country Rally for

Kids lies an ulterior motive! This expert band of organizers has totally dedicated it-self to raising large sums of money to help kids-in-need in Hays County throughout the year. This year’s Rally, August 14-16, is a (very fun!) means to that end.

And fun is what they deliver. Amidst the giant oaks and meandering creek at Camp Ben McCulloch in Driftwood (across from the Salt Lick), rally-goers can camp out and enjoy the Rally, start-to-finish. Or just come for the day.

Yin Yoga on Thursdays & Kundalini coming!Saturday morning brings a huge ar-

ray of beautifully restored cars, motor-cycles and tractors as the judges (adult and children’s teams) decide who will take home first prize. The Fun Run starts, with an 80-mile route to stopping points in Wimberley, Spring Branch, Blanco and Dripping Springs. The Silent Auction opens, kids activities (obstacle course, archery, bounce house, face painting, wa-termelon eating contest) commence, the washer pitching competition begins, and cooking for the day’s three barbecue con-tests fires up. After lunch, Al Monti and his Blues Band play and awards are an-nounced in the car and motorcycle shows.

Winners of the Grand Raffle find out if they’ve won the 1997 custom Jeep or custom golf cart (or both!) Later in the af-ternoon, Michael Myers will entertain the crowd with his country sound and at 5 pm the winners in the barbecue competitions will be announced. The evening hours will be filled with visiting, fun and games around the camp. This year’s Rally con-cludes with a worship service at the Tab-ernacle on Sunday morning.

The money raised that weekend - through admissions, raffle tickets and silent auction sales, vendor booths, com-petition entry fees and sponsorships - will help local charities that benefit kids all year long.

RED Arena, near Dripping Springs, received $11,500 last year from the Hill Country Rally to help with their equine therapy program for children with physi-cal and developmental issues, includ-ing autism, Down’s Syndrome and head and spinal cord injuries. Tiger Totes and School’s Out, Food’s In programs, which

provide meals for school kids outside the regular school calendar, received $18,000 and $8,900, respectively. Burke Center for Youth (residential home for at-risk youth) and Amber’s Angels (caring for kids with serious illness) each received $7,500. Dripping Springs Ag Boosters (benefits the Burke Center’s youth goat program), local Boy Scout troops and the Former Burke Kids Assistance Fund also received funding from last year’s Rally.

With the generous help of their sponsors, the Hill Country Rally for Kids is able to donate every dollar the Rally brings in directly to charities. A Gala fun-draiser in April, held at a private ranch near Dripping Springs, also brings in thousands of dollars that the group uses for their mission of helping children in Hays County.

FYI • The 2015 Hill Country Rally for Kids is Au-gust 14-16 at Camp Ben McCulloch on Farm Market 1826 (across from the Salt Lick). General information and reg-istration for the barbecue cook off, car show, bike show, washer pitching and vendor space is available online at www.hcrally.com.

What would a “green-built” com-munity look like? Imagine an entire neighborhood with

homes designed for energy efficiency, passive solar heating and cooling, high indoor air quality, with all water sup-plied by rainwater collection. Now, stop imagining, and take a look at TerraScena Homes near Dripping Springs.

TerraScena - Homes with a Natural Point of View - is one of many housing developments going up around town, but it’s one with distinctive differences.

Owner/developer team Catherine and Joe Werth designed the 34 acres to be a cohesive neighborhood of 15 home sites, laid out so each site has optimum solar orientation, while leaving almost nine acres for natural habitat and walk-ing trails.

There are no huge water pipes be-ing buried along the roads entering the neighborhood, nor will wellers’ rigs be drilling holes into the aquifer there. The entire subdivision’s needs for domestic water will be met with rainwater collect-ed off the homes’ roofs.

TerraScena’s deed guidelines recom-mend a 30,000 gallon metal tank for most homes. Joe and Catherine currently live with a 40,000 gallon tank collecting rain off a 4,500 square foot roof. “That’s ample water for our needs - and would be plen-ty for a family,” Catherine assures.

Guidelines encourage water conser-vation through low-flow toilets, faucets and showerheads and landscaping with native plants.

Deed guidelines also call for all ap-pliances to have an Energy Star rating. Home construction should use a total envelope insulation with smart technolo-gies to monitor and reduce energy usage.

Proposed home construction in TerraScena will be calculated on HERS (Home Energy Rating System Index - the industry standard for measuring energy efficiency) to achieve high efficiency of operation.

Beyond just focusing on green-built and energy-efficient homes, those liv-ing in TerraScena will be becoming part a community of like-minded people who care about their impact on their environ-ment and want to live a more natural life-style, Catherine explains.

Green building, or as the Werths like to call it — “resource conscious liv-ing”— is more than a recent interest for Joe and Catherine. Catherine grew up near TerraScena and loved exploring the natural wonders along its wet-weather creek. (That’s also the 8.8 acres set aside as a natural area.)

Though she lived away from Drip-ping Springs for most of her adult life, Catherine was determined to protect the into the future.

“How do you protect land?” she asks. Leaving it in its natural state could leave it open to development down the road by those who might care less about protect-ing it. So she came to the decision to de-velop it herself in a caring and conscious way, to preserve its natural beauty and wonder.

Education of natural building and “resource conscious living” is part of the business vision that Joe and Catherine carry out daily in developing TerraScena. Their own home (which they built to be a show home - though now they’re not sure they can part with it) is a green building education center in itself: intentional solar orientation with overhangs and porches, low-energy appliances, large insulative windows built in Texas, non-toxic paints and wood finishes - and beautiful artis-tic touches courtesy of Joe’s collection of “pickings” over the years.

The couple sometimes spend hours, they say, talking to people who don’t live in Central Texas and will never buy a home in TerraScena, about home con-struction, rainwater collection, and other resource conscious living measures they promote.

FYI • TerraScena - Homes with a Natural Point of View is located just north of Fitzhugh Road off Ranch Road 12. Nine of the 15 home sites are still available. To see photos, maps and get more information, visit the web site at terrascena.com, email [email protected] or call 512-934-1598.

Thanks to a grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Living with Texas Produce program, visitors at the Dripping Springs Farmers Market this fall can learn more about creating healthy, tasty and varied food using locally grown

products available there. At the initial program in July, Laura Petty of Hays County Extension Service’s Fam-

ily and Consumer Services demonstrated how to turn local produce into healthy sum-mer beverages.

In August, Laura Petty will show how to spice up dishes using fresh herbs, in-stead of salt. September’s program will showcase the incredible, edible egg (especially free range eggs from the Farmers Market). October’s demonstration will show how to use pumpkin and winter squash in soups and main dishes. In November, when cool weather produce is at its peak, the Healthy Living program will focus on greens - how to cook and enjoy them.

The monthly presentations are made possible by funding from the Texas Depart-ment of Agriculture’s Healthy LIving with Texas Produce grant that the Dripping Springs Farmers Market was awarded in June. The grant enables the market to partner with nutritional educators to provide market visitors the opportunity to learn how to create a healthy, tasty, and varied diet using locally grown and produced foods.

The Dripping Springs Farmers Market is held at the Triangle (northeast corner of the Highway 290 and Ranch Road 12 intersection) every Wednesday from 3 pm to 7 pm. The grassy field is filled with local growers and producers offering homegrown produce, baked and canned goods; locally grown chicken, lamb and eggs; honey olive oil, and vinegars; locally roasted coffees, nuts and prepared foods; and handcrafted decorative and gift items. Live musicians provide a background to the busy banter of shoppers. A children’s area offers activities such as Legos, art supplies and rocking chairs (useful for weary adults, too).

FYI • The market is sponsored by the City of Dripping Springs and operates year-round. For more information, see the city website (cityofdrippingsprings.com) or visit the Dripping Springs Farmers Market Facebook page.
