FROM THE BOARD A MONTHLY SUMMARY OF BOARD HIGHLIGHTS AND DECISIONS

Modified school year calendar approved February 2005 The Board has approved a modified school calendar for 2005-2006:

Number of school days 194 Number of professional activity days System-wide PA days—elementary

Enrolment Action Plan to continue As part of the Board’s Enrolment Action Plan, all elementary principals/staff will continue to call each parent of a Grade 8 student who indicates on the initial application a non-TCDSB secondary school choice. This initiative will be continued for a second year. In the first year the retention rate for the system rose from 84.2% to 86.08%, which represents about 129 students.

Amendments to TCDSB Admissions Policy The Board has approved a recommendation to allow the Director of Education to waive the current Admissions Policy as required on humanitarian grounds to ensure that the families and children impacted by natural disasters and other catastrophic events like the recent tsunami in south Asia can be provided the opportunity of schooling as expeditiously as possible.

Senior Staff Appointments The Board approved the following transfers of Senior Staff: • Les Nemes, Acting Executive Superintendent of Academic Affairs • Mark Fenwick, Acting Superintendent of Curriculum and Accountability • Mary-Eileen Donovan, Acting Superintendent of Success for All. Ms. Donovan will retain responsibility for

Monsignor Fraser, Continuing Education and the Apple program.

The Board welcomes back three retired superintendents who have graciously agreed to assist TCDSB for the remainder of this school year. The Board welcomes the following acting school superintendents: • Mary Anne O'Leary, replacing Les Nemes in east Toronto • Marg Carravaggie, replacing Mark Fenwick in central Toronto • Eleanor Shannon, replacing Mary-Eileen Donovan in west Toronto This information is also posted on the board’s website at www.tcdsb.org.

Father Henry Carr site redevelopment to proceed The Board has approved the first phase of the redevelopment of Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School at an estimated cost of $9,580,956. The redevelopment, with an initial pupil place capacity of 741, is to be located at 1760 Martin Grove Road, the former site of Marian Academy.

Letter to local MPS supporting Archdiocese position A letter will be sent to each local Member of Parliament in the City of Toronto, and to the Prime Minister of Canada, supporting the Archdiocese of Toronto position on same sex marriage. Each letter will be signed by some or all of the Trustees of the Board.

System-wide consultations to be undertaken The Board is initiating community consultations on a number of issues during the remainder of the school year. These consultations will relate to the following issues: the draft video surveillance policy, the no sweatshop policy, the victim’s rights policy, and lockdown procedures. Each school community will be asked to respond to one of the four initiatives, as well as budget priorities and system priorities, with a minimum of 50 schools providing input into each one. School communities will also be invited to respond to other issues that are of significant interest if they wish. The item will be brought by the principal to the CSAC, staff and secondary students. A minimum of 10 students in each secondary school will be invited to provide comment. Elementary students will be included where interests and maturity indicate an understanding of the issue. Feedback can be provided individually or collectively using the forms provided to schools, or on-line through the Board’s website at www.tcdsb.org. Consultation response documents will be sent to all unions and professional associations for comment as well.

Resolutions considered for OCSTA’s annual general meeting The Board of Trustees has approved two draft resolutions, which are to be presented to the annual general meeting of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association in April. The resolutions focus on the release of funds clawed back in the Intensive Support Amount Process, and on a determination as to how the funding process will be developed to provide continued and enhanced programs and services for those students with moderate to severe needs.

Staffing of secondary school libraries In consultation and collaboration with TSU (Toronto Secondary Unit, Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association) the Board has been able to keep secondary school libraries open full-time each day using library teachers and teacher coverage. The amount of money still available from the original allocated budget is $501,115. Using this model, there is no requirement to hire any of the 12.5 library technicians. This solution for keeping secondary school libraries open all day is feasible for this year, but not necessarily for future years. Staff is in the process of planning for next year to ensure that libraries remain open full time.

TCDSB School lawn signs The Board approved a recommendation regarding the placement of lawn signs for elementary and secondary schools. The approved standard for signage incorporates the board logo, board name, and school name, address and telephone number. The school name which appears on the sign should be consistent with the name on the school and on the school stationary. Many of the schools, which existed before Extension, do not contain the word ‘Catholic’ as part of their school name. History, traditions and the memory of the alumnae/alumni of the school community stand behind those school names, and their courageous struggle to exist in the face of determined official opposition. Examples of such schools are St. Joseph’s College, Neil McNeil High School, Chaminade College School and Bishop Allen Academy. Future signs at these schools will contain the words Toronto Catholic District School Board.

TCDSB playground equipment The Board will divide the $1.1 million allocated for playground equipment and site preparations for 2004-2005 equally among trustee wards, and then allocate to individual schools within each trustee ward using the TCDSB playground eligibility criteria as a guideline with the final decision taken by the Director of Education in consultation with the trustee and staff.

The Board’s policy on Playground Equipment has been revised to reflect these changes. The revised policy can be found on the Board’s website at www.tcdsb.org under Policies.

TORONTO COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EVENTS (Earth Day Leadership Projects)

This year Mayor Miller’s 20-Minute Make-over is scheduled for Friday, April 22 (Earth Day), with the Community Clean-up following on Saturday, April 23.

TCDSB elementary and secondary schools are asked to participate in the 20-Minute Makeover and encouraged to consider a larger community clean-up.

A 20-Minute Makeover at its simplest level is a school community (or representation of a school community) setting aside 20 minutes to clean-up the school (inside and/or outside).

The idea of clean-up happening on the same day on school grounds right across the city is very attractive, but we recognize that sometimes the designated day does not fit a school’s schedule. If you are not able to arrange a clean-up on these days, we recommend that you choose one day between Monday, April 18 and Saturday, May 28.

To assist schools in planning this year’s event, the Facilities and Student Leadership Departments are working with several other partners to produce a community clean-up guide. This guide will include:

• Ideas for a school’s 20-Minute Makeover and Clean Community Campaign • Safety and equipment • Logistics of garbage and recycling disposal • Registration information for schools who wished to recognize their students’

participation • Prayer services to be used during Earth Week Participation in events such as these allows students to live the Catholic Graduate Expectation: A Responsible Citizen, as they do their part to help create a clean and beautiful Toronto. This leadership project might be championed by a student leadership team, (i.e. ESP, Smile) an environmental club, the chaplaincy team, a science or social science class or staff and students who are passionate about environmental issues. We would ask that all schools include their caretakers as major partners in this initiative.

Good Citizenship Awards for Juniors Share Newspaper, February 18, 2005 by QUEEN MACOOMEH

GOOD CITIZENS: Taisha Johnson, a grade six student at F.H. Miller Junior School, Kate Wilson and Devon Morris, grade five students at Fairbank Memorial Community School and Crystal Gopie, a grade five student at St. Rita Catholic School, are all students from the Caribbean Heritage Program who received Good Citizenship Awards for Juniors at a ceremony in the Ontario Legislature recently. The students were selected by their teachers and principals at their respective schools for having demonstrated kindness, respect for other people's feelings, being helpful towards younger children

and the elderly, and for conducting themselves in a responsible fashion towards their parents, teachers and peers. They were each presented with a certificate. "This year's winners represent the qualities we would all like to see in today's youth," said MPP Tony Ruprecht (Davenport), sponsor of the awards. "They are the type of children who serve as wonderful role models for their peers." The Good Citizenship Award for Juniors was introduced in 1978 as a way of encouraging responsible citizenship among the community's youth.

SUBJECT: 12-2 Community helps youngster in cancer fight - Fannie Sunshine, East York Mirror Feb. 18, 2005 Students and staff at St. Brigid Catholic School are banding together to help raise funds for a senior kindergarten student who is fighting cancer. Anthony Dattolico was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia Nov. 29 and has since been out of school. The five-year-old is receiving chemotherapy treatment every two weeks at the Hospital for Sick Children, said his mother Cathy. "We're hoping he can return to school in April," said the Danforth and Coxwell avenues area resident. "The week before he was diagnosed he had symptoms of a common cold and coughing. Puffers were prescribed to him but he didn't seem well. He was always sleeping and not eating and was feverish." Anthony's pediatrician told Cathy that her son's spleen and liver were enlarged. Further testing revealed the devastating news. "My husband's dad had skin cancer, but he was 65 and has nothing to do with Anthony (diagnoses)," Cathy said. "There is no history (of cancer), none." She said Anthony has remained upbeat and energetic throughout chemotherapy treatment, which could continue another two years. "He's good," Cathy said. "If you didn't know what he had, you'd think he was a normal kid." As for the fundraiser organized by the Woodmount Avenue school, Cathy said 'Thank you' doesn't seem to cut it. "You always think that you're the one who helps people and you never think it can happen to you," she said. "I don't know if thank you is enough, but to everyone involved I want to say a big thank you." Marguerite Thomson, principal of St. Brigid, said the fundraiser is one way the school can help support the Dattolico family. "There are a lot of costs that OHIP doesn't cover, such as prescription drugs that are required and taxi rides to the hospital," she said. "As a school community we are supporting the family. (The fundraiser) is about awareness and moral support and whatever we can get is great. We just really want to do something that says 'We are there for you'. It's a horrendous thing."

The fundraiser dinner, dance and silent auction will be held March 5 at Whistler's Bar and Grill (McNeil Room), 995 Broadview Ave., starting at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $25 or $5 for the dance and silent auction only.

Brian Lloyd, a grade-four teacher at St. Martin de Porres Catholic School in West Hill, Ont., helped incorporate a child with autism and ADD into his regular classroom last year. HISTORY: In 1993, a custodian sustained injuries to his hand while cleaning out a snowblower machine. The worker was removing a small blockage of newspaper, tree twig and snow from the auger discharge chute while the engine was idling. The auger was in tension and the impeller blades were not rotating. When the worker tried to dislodge the clog from the impeller blades they rotated and crushed the worker’s fingers, causing fractures and lacerations. In 2000, a custodian hurt his ribs when the snowblower caught on an uneven pavement and caused a kickback. PRECAUTIONS: • Be sure the areas to be cleared are free from hidden hazards by checking the walkways for anything

that could be caught in the snowblower before it snows • Wear relatively close-fitting clothing • Do not refuel the snowblower indoors • Never leave the machine running unattended • Always allow a certain distance between your abdomen/chest and the snowblower in the event of a

kickback STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES: 1. If the auger becomes clogged, do not reach into the auger shell to dislodge ice, snow or debris. 2. Before attempting to clear the auger or chute, stop the engine. 3. Never put your hand in the auger housing or discharge chute while the engine is running. Instead,

turn off the engine, and use a tool to pry out the clog. 4. Do not attempt to repair the snowblower. Disconnect the machine and report it to the Service

Quality Supervisor. 5. Reduce speed on slopes and sharp turns to prevent tipping or loss of control. 6. The operator should receive proper instruction in the operation of the snowblower from Head

Caretaker/Supervisor before using the equipment.

Cuernavaca is known as the “city of eternal spring” because of year-round ideal climate. It is less than two hours from Mexico City and near many historic sites.

CCIDD is an ecumenical centre founded in 1977 in conjunction with Bishop Sergio Mendez Arceo to promote experiential understanding of Christian struggle in Latin America. The program includes encounters with historians and leaders from the women’s, labour, political, religious and grassroots communities. Lectures, personal witness and visits to urban squatter settlements and rural indigenous villages are intermingled with ample amount of group reflection time to process new insights and challenges.
