SUMMER STUDENT EMPLOYMENT

Please be advised that applications for summer student employment are available

From April 5 to May 7, 2004 inclusive, at all Catholic secondary schools from the

Guidance Department, as well as at the

Reception Desk at the Catholic Education Centre, Ground Floor.

The minimum age for summer students is 15 years of age. The rate of pay is $7.19 per hour plus 4% vacation pay. The hours of work for custodial positions are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with one half hour for lunch and two fifteen minute breaks; for clerical positions the hours fluctuate. The number of students to be hired has not yet been finalized. Additional information is contained in an Information Sheet available with each application.

IRISH FAMINE COMMEMORATION HERITAGE SCHOLARSHIP

CELTIC SUMMER SCHOOL IN IRELAND

JULY 2004

• The Irish Canadian Aid and Cultural Society, in conjunction with Celtic Learning & Travel Services Ltd., and Kemptville Travel Ltd. is offering a full scholarship to the Celtic Summer school in Ireland for July 2004. The scholarship commemorates the 156th anniversary of the Great Irish Famine (An Gorta Mor)

• The Credit Courses, offered through Brebeuf College Catholic Secondary School, include Grade 11, 12 English, Drama, Geography and History. They will be held in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Edinburgh and London and will place special emphasis on the Irish contribution to Western literature and society.

• The award is a full scholarship to attend Celtic Summer School in Ireland 2004 and covers flights, all accommodation and meals, course materials, bus and rail travel in Dublin (DART), field trips, excursions, and theatre visits as per the itinerary.

• Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded a full Grade 11 or 12 Credit. • The scholarship is open to all Ontario students who will have completed a Senior English or social

studies credit by June 2004. • The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of a writing contest and letter that will be adjudicated

by a committee of teachers of the Toronto Catholic District School Board and members of the Irish Canadian Aid and Cultural Society. Decisions of the committee will be final.

• The scholarship will be awarded on the basis a written, approximate 1200 word, submission. The written work may be in any literary form (e.g. prose, poetry, journal, letter, fiction, etc.) but must be the student's original work and should be submitted to Celtic Learning by March 31, 2004. The submission should be accompanied by a short covering letter with the name of a teacher reference and details of the student's interests and achievements. The winner will be chosen on the basis of the written submission and the letter.

POSTER MAKING CONTEST AND EXHIBITION ON CELEBRATION OF FILIPINO MABUHAY FESTIVAL

The Philippine Independence Day Council (PDIC), working with the Filipino Community Relations Officer of the Toronto Catholic District School Board, is proud to present its first poster contest and exhibition. The organization is inviting all Grades 5-12 students within the Greater Toronto Area to participate in the poster making contest and exhibition about the Theme:

MABUHAY FESTIVAL: A Celebration of the Contributions by the Filipino Community To Canada.

Posters are to be exhibited during the Mabuhay Festival Celebrations at Heritage Court on August 5-8, 2004. Winners will receive gift certificates. Artworks will be featured in the community newspapers and posted in the PIDC website. Specific Rules for Posters

• Posters size is 18x24 inches and drawn on paper or cardboard. • Any medium except lead pencils (crayon, marker, paint, ink, watercolor, charcoal, coloured

pencil, etc.) is acceptable. Collages consisting of material cut out of magazines and sculptures will not be accepted.

• Do not use stencils for lettering or plastic sticker letters. • Do not glue or tape objects on posters • Each student may submit only one entry. • Entry forms should include: The artist’s name, age, grade, address and telephone number,

name of school and teacher. The entry form should be stapled at the back of the poster.

• The theme must be written on the poster.

The poster should become the property of PIDC.

Entries must be postmarked by June 15, 2004

MARIO GASPAROTTO VISUAL ARTS AWARD Call for Nominations

HISTORY This fund honours the memory of Mario Gasparotto, a dedicated and much-loved TCDSB educator, well known for his commitment to the arts in TCDSB schools. Mario was employed by the MSSB, now TCDSB, from 1971 until 2001. While pursuing his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at the University of Toronto, he taught visual arts and art history in MSSB high schools. His passion for art was well known and inspired many art students. In 1983, he became art consultant for the Board, becoming a mentor to many art teachers. In the mid 1990's he was appointed Superintendent of Education with the TCDSB and held that position until his death. Mario is remembered for his love of art, his breadth of knowledge, his high standards, and his generous manner with students and teachers alike. DESCRIPTION OF AWARD The Mario Gasparotto Memorial Visual Arts Award is a special fund administered through the Metropolitan Toronto Catholic Education Foundation to support graduating students planning to pursue post-secondary studies in visual arts at college or university. Two awards of $500 each will be given to students each year. CRITERA Allocations for the Mario Gasparotto Memorial Visual Arts Award will be made by the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Toronto Catholic Education Foundation to a grade 12 student who has been accepted to post-secondary visual arts studies at college or university. Selection will be made by a panel of visual arts educators and will be based on: • The quality of the student's work in terms of originality, creativity, problem-solving and technical ability • The student's overall achievement in visual arts • The student's post-secondary plans • The student's overall contribution to the school and community APPLICATION PROCESS Students will be nominated by the Department Heads for Visual Arts in TCDSB secondary schools. (Maximum of two nominations per school) For each application the following is required: • A letter of application from the student, explaining post-secondary plans • A portfolio of snapshots of at least three major works. Each snapshot must be accompanied by a half-page statement

describing the dimensions and media of the work as well as an artist's statement explaining the purpose of the work • A letter of recommendation from the student's teacher detailing the student's achievement and work habits in visual

arts as well as school and community involvement • Evidence of acceptance into a post-secondary visual arts program SELECTION PROCESS All applications will be forwarded by the school Department Head for Visual Arts to the TCDSB Program Coordinator for the Arts by May 14, 2004. • A panel of arts educators will review the applications and prepare a list of finalists. • Finalists will make an oral presentation of their works to the panel in late May. • The panel will make the final decision regarding recipients of the award. Notification of the winners will be made in early June. Note: Winning the award is conditional on the students being accepted into a postsecondary program of study in visual arts. DONATIONS TO THE MARIO GASPAROTTO FUND Donations to the Mario Gasparotto Memorial Visual Arts Award Fund may be made to the Metropolitan Toronto Catholic Education Foundation, 80 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario, M2N 6E8. NORMAN FORMA BURSARY Call for Applications

HISTORY This bursary recognizes Norman Forma, a former Director of Educator with the Toronto Catholic District School Board, as an outstanding educator.

Norm retired from the Toronto Catholic District School Board after thirty-three years of exemplary service. Norm first joined the board, then known as the Metropolitan Separate School Board, in 1965 as a teacher at St Raymond Catholic School. Shortly thereafter, Norm was named Vice-Principal of St Matthew Catholic School. This was followed by a four-year term at St. Vincent de Paul. In 1975, Norm was named special assistant to the Director of Education for a two-year term, after which he held a number of positions including Superintendent of Education of Planning and of Curriculum, Assistant Director of Curriculum and Special Services, Deputy Director of Education for Program Services before accepting the position of Director in 1996. Widely respected for his collaborative, compassionate and student-centered leadership Norm is particularly remembered at the board for his interest in promoting increased opportunity for deaf and hard of hearing students. Although he has retired from full time work, Norm continues to embrace new challenges and opportunities. Norm is currently the Executive Director of Silent Voice, a Catholic Charity meeting the unique needs of deaf children and their families. DESCRIPTION OF AWARD This award is presented annually to a graduating deaf or hard of hearing student. The bursary, in recognition of academic achievement, provides financial support in the amount of $500 towards post-secondary education at the university or college level. CRITERIA The successful applicant will be a graduating student from either the class or itinerant deaf and hard of hearing program with the Toronto Catholic District School Board. The student will have been accepted into a college or university program and will be entering first year post-secondary studies following graduation. APPLICATION PROCESS Interested students must submit the following: • Letter of application outlining their post-secondary plans including their plans for coping with their hearing loss in

the post-secondary setting • A letter of support from the student’s teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing detailing the student’s academic

achievement in light of the hearing loss and their school and community involvement • Evidence of acceptance into a post-secondary program

Application forms will be available from the MTCEF website www.mtcef.org (follow the links bequests and endowments) or from Joan Lovell (416 222-8282 ext. 2844 or joan.lovell @tcdsb.org)

The application and a letter of reference must be forwarded to Sheila Flood, Program Coordinator Deaf and Hard of Hearing before May 15, 2004. SELECTION PROCESS The review committee will consist of the interdisciplinary support team from Special Programs Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Consideration will be given to: • Significance of hearing loss • Student’s overall achievement • Student’s post-secondary plans • Student’s overall contribution to the school and community Notification of the award will be given in early June. Donations to the Norman Forma Bursary Fund can be made through the Metropolitan Toronto Catholic Education Foundation (MTCEF). All donations to MTCEF will be acknowledged and a tax receipt will be issued.

MSSB Employees’ Credit Union Limited Bursary

Call for applications A. HISTORY

As part of its ongoing support for MTCEF, the Board of Directors for the MSSB Employees’ Credit Union Limited has established a bursary, which will be awarded to a graduate of a TCDSB secondary school in order to help defray the cost of post-secondary school education.

B. DESCRIPTION OF AWARD This bursary will be awarded annually to a graduating student who requires financial assistance in order to

pursue studies at university or college. The annual amount of the award will be $500. C. CRITERIA

Awards from the MSSBECU Bursary Fund will be made by the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Toronto Catholic Education Foundation to a Grade 12 student who is currently attending a TCDSB secondary school. Selection of the recipient will be made by a committee composed of representatives from the MSSBECU and the MTCEF Board of Directors and will be based on the following criteria:

q ‘B’ average or higher q Evidence of financial need q Overall contribution to the school and community q Acceptance into a post-secondary institution.

Preference will be given to applicants whose parent/guardian is a member of MSSBECU. D. APPLICATION PROCESS:

For each application the following is required: q A completed application form q A letter of application from the student q A letter of recommendation from the school principal or designate which outlines contributions to the

school and community and which states the nature of the financial need (Please include as much detail as appropriate)

BARRY DIEMERT MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP Call for Applications

History: Barry Diemert joined the Metropolitan Separate School Board in 1962 as a teacher. He quickly moved through the ranks as music consultant, assistant superintendent of music and finally superintendent of schools. During his 18-year tenure as assistant superintendent of music (1977-96) he vigorously built programs in vocal and instrumental music for all schools in the system. Barry was passionate in his belief that the lives of every student should experience the enrichment of music. He expanded the Music Education Festivals throughout the board and was a driving force in introducing the Christmas Tuba Festival, now an annual event in the city of Toronto. His love for the performing arts in general led to the creation of Staff Arts. One of his favourite pastimes was making music with family, friends and fellow teachers. He will always be remembered for his love of music, his devotion to family and friends, and the dedication and excellence he brought to music education throughout the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Description of Award: The Barry Diemert Music Scholarship is an annual award of $2000 given to a successful graduate of the Toronto Catholic District School Board wishing to pursue music education at a university, college or other post-secondary music school. It is administered by the Metropolitan Toronto Catholic Education Foundation (MTCEF). Criteria: This scholarship will be given to a grade 12 who has been accepted to a post-secondary music programme. Selection will be made by a Selection Committee and will be based on: - Musicianship as demonstrated through school and related performance activities - A minimum overall academic average of 80% - Demonstration of leadership and service in school and community - Letter outlining goals and objectives stating why candidate is deserving of the award - Referrals from a music teacher and the school principal - Confirmation of acceptance into a post-secondary music programme Process and Timeline of Applications: Application forms will be available from the MTCEF website www.mtcef.org (follow the links bequests and endowments) or from Joan Lovell (416 222-8282 ext. 2844 or joan.lovell @tcdsb.org) Applications should be forwarded to the Program Coordinator for the Arts at the CEC by June 15, 2004. In grades 8 and 9, Therese Devinka Paiva considered herself one of the quietest people at school. That changed with the encouragement of her family, friends and teachers. “I realized I was not alone, and people would be there to support me whether I won or lost,” she says. Now in grade 12, Devinka is student council president at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Toronto. “I have to be the voice of the students to parents, teachers and administration,” she says. Devinka, 16, also organizes school events, such as dances, school spirit events and volunteer activities. In grade 10, she helped organize a fund-raising event that raised more than $2,000 for children in Cameroon. Devinka plans to study science at university and become a pediatrician.

.Erin Lymer’s involvement in World Youth Day 2002 helped her grow in her faith. “Through this experience, I was able to meet fellow teens from around the globe who shared my beliefs,” says this 17-year-old grade 12 student at Michael Power/St. Joseph Catholic High School. That summer, she also learned about the different cultures and traditions of the people who descended on Toronto for the event. “This experience enhanced my awareness of the poverty and needs of those living in other countries, and was at the heart of my goal to travel around the world,” Erin says. In September, Erin was chosen as a counselor for her school’s grade 9 orientation. She was in charge of 13 campers, and used the experience to learn how to encourage people to take on new experiences. Erin wants to study health sciences or business.

VIOLENCE AWARENESS AND PREVETION PROGRAM This past December marked the 14th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. The community at St. Joseph’s College Catholic Secondary School renewed its commitment to raising awareness about the causes and effects of violence by hosting its fifth annual Violence Awareness and Prevention Program. This year’s activities focused on recognizing and responding to bullying, developing effective anger and conflict management skills, understanding family violence, cultivating healthy relationships, and developing personal safety skills. Under the direction of Josephine Lobo, Guidance Head, and Maria Buzdon, Child and Youth Worker, a comprehensive, experiential program examining violence from a social, familial, interpersonal, and intra-personal perspective was delivered. Students participated in forum theatre, interactive workshops, art activities, and heard personal testimonials from guest presenters. Dramatic displays were scattered throughout the school, including the silhouettes of and narratives from actual victims. These displays bore witness to the lives of these women.

The culminating activity for senior students was a full day conference “Spreading the Word – Sharing the Knowledge “, organized by Grade 12 youth leaders at Metro Hall. The central theme, “Personal Safety”, addressed the issues of dating violence and sexual assault. The conference involved many community partners including Catholic Family Services, Women’s College Hospital, Toronto Police Services, Metro Action Committee on Violence against Women and Children, Toronto Family and Immigration Law Office, and Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke. Meanwhile, Grade 9 and 10 students

participated in Violence Awareness and Prevention activities organized by the Empowering Student Partnerships committee and their teacher, Todd Visinski. These young women acted as facilitators for guest presentations and lead in-class workshops on conflict and anger management. The Empowering Student Partnerships (ESP) committee was also instrumental in setting up the various dramatic art displays throughout the school and organizing the visual presentation for the Day of Remembrance Memorial Service. Preparations have already begun for next year’s Violence Awareness Week The success of the St. Joseph’s College School program has not only impacted on the immediate school community but has succeeded in inspiring others to introduce similar violence awareness activities in their own schools. We look forward to developing new innovative programs and sharing these initiatives with others!

History Fair at Francis Libermann On Wednesday, December 3, 2003, Francis Libermann hosted its 5th annual grade 10 Canadian History Fair, organized by K. Dennis, C. Howe, P. Kennedy and J. Szala. This fair builds on research and presentation skills used in the elementary school fair. After several months of research and conferencing, the top two groups from each grade 10 class- enriched, academic and applied- went to the school finals in the Library. Guest judges from other board schools, as well as one from Leaside High School, helped to judge the projects. Topics included the CBC, Montreal Massacre, Quebec Referendum, Internment of Japanese-Canadians and Military Strategies in WWI. First place went to Kayla Williams, Jenna Garcia, Edward Lamson and Pablo Hernandez.

Francis Libermann History Fair Winners Visit Leaside

On Thursday, February 12, 2004, the top 8 groups from the Francis Libermann History Fair visited Leaside High School to compare their projects with those of their Leaside counterparts. Our students were accompanied by teachers, Elizabeth Polihronidis, Caroline Howe and Karen Dennis, as well as CAWS coordinator, John Ryall. Students from both schools presented a mini-version of their topics, exchanging presentation ideas and information. Leaside graciously provided us with lunch, gave all the participants certificates and presented the Libermann teachers with a plaque. Libermann will be hosting next year’s event. A special thanks to Patricia Baker at Leaside High School for organizing the day, as well as to the principal, Heidi Gollert, for her hospitality.

The Health and Physical Education Department is hosting a workshop for teachers who are interested in gaining new ideas for their junior and intermediate physical education classes. Fitness, dance, and games of low organization are just some of the topics that will be covered. Links to literacy and numeracy will also be explored. Participants in the workshop will receive an information package and an opportunity to learn some fun new activities. The workshop will be facilitated by Fernando Clotildes (grade 8 teacher at St. Helen) and Lois Medal (health and physical education resource teacher). Participants are encouraged to wear clothing suitable for activity.
