Loretto Abbey and 32 Division team-up to combat graffiti (Posted Date: Thursday, May 20, 2004—Town Crier) By Ken Shular These girls aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.

About a half dozen students from Loretto Abbey were on hand May 8 to help Const. Wayne Pierce with a graffiti clean-up in Woburn Park. The girls worked hard for a couple of hours in the morning removing and painting over graffiti on the small brick bathroom house, which was also re-painted, and removing graffiti from the plastic playscape and park benches. As well, the girls also policed the park picking up litter and any sharp objects.

"Every year I try to do a community graffiti clean-up," said Pierce the crime prevention officer in 32 Division. "I’ve done other ones in the Yonge and Sheppard area in years past and cleaned up some parks and this time I thought I’d just do a park in another part of the city — in another part of 32. I’ve been by there; it’s a well-used park by the community. In the spring, summer and fall a lot of people use it, so I thought that would be a good one because everybody does appreciate the park and it does have quite a bit of graffiti in it. So I just thought that would be a good effort to concentrate on this time out and the city has been very supportive in providing the paint and businesses like Rona-Lansing have been very supportive this year providing supplies."

Loretto Abbey, located north of the park towards York Mills Rd., was a natural fit as the school has been working with 32 Division through the Empowered Student Partnership (ESP) program. ESP is a student-led partnership between the Toronto Police Service, the Canadian Safe School Network, city council, ProAction and all the school boards in the City of Toronto. At present, 80 schools are on board with the program, which is now in its second year

The primary focus of ESP is to empower students to plan, organize, and execute a yearlong safe schools initiative in their local schools and communities. So far, Loretto Abbey has tackled issues such as safety in schools, violence against women and, of course, graffiti.

"If you visit our school, our school is quite good, respectfully speaking it’s actually in great shape and we want to keep it that way so we do a lot of prevention stuff," said Lina Naccarato, a child and youth worker at Loretto Abbey.

For the Woburn Park initiative, it wasn’t hard getting volunteers to come out and sacrifice a Saturday, added Naccarato.

"Our girls are actually very conscientious like that," she said. "I’m not saying they’re all this way, but I would say the larger majority of our girls are very conscientious about litter, because if you walk around our school right now and you drive around the streets that are neighbouring where our students walk in, it’s actually relatively quite clean.

"Our girls are very excited and very happy and eager to help our community. That’s why they are participating."

And for Pierce this was an opportunity to show the neighbouring community a different side of teenagers — one that doesn’t always show itself.

"I just looked for a school that was fairly close to the area and students there are always looking for things to do and this is good for them to do something in the community that their school is in," he said. "Quite often people have negative thoughts about teenagers — that they’re not helpful and don’t do anything — so this is a perfect way to show that they can be of help to the community."

Grade 10 student Shannon Neal, 15, said she volunteered to spend a few hours at Woburn Park as a way for her to contribute to the community.

Grade 12 students Elisabeth de Campenhout and Madhu Pinto paint over graffiti at Woburn Park May 8 as part of a joint initiative between Loretto Abbey school and local police.

She said she isn’t a member of the ESP committee at school, but she’s considering enrolling in September

after spending a rainy Saturday morning with fellow volunteers. "I thought about joining last September, but I didn’t get involved because I was so busy and I thought it

wasn’t even really that important until I got some more information about it," she said while taking a break painting a picnic table in the park.

She said work like hers is vital to the community, especially since vandals have made a mess of parks like Woburn.

"I think this is important because people who vandalize parks are wrong because it’s not really their park," she said.

"We’re doing something right for the community. And also, it’s good for me doing it because it makes me feel good."

She also has advice for the city, which finds itself maintaining parks with shrinking budgets. She believes the city could borrow a page from her school and the police department and recruit volunteers of its own and kick-start its own volunteer-based programs.

"They should get other people to work on other parks that are really bad. They should get some volunteers and just get doing it. It would really help."

Pope Paul VI students participate in “Move to the Moon” event

Students across Canada travelled the distance to the moon and about halfway back on May 26th. There weren't any astronauts or space shuttles on this journey. Instead, close to 300,000 students ran, skipped, jumped and danced in their school playgrounds and gymnasiums to reach a combined distance of more than 500,000 kilometres -- 384,403 kilometres to get to the moon and the rest to reach halfway home. Pope Paul VI Catholic School was among the TCDSB schools who participate in the Move to the Moon event run by Active Healthy Kids Canada, a national charitable organization. Students put away their textbooks to run around the school playground or gymnasium for anywhere from 20 minutes to one hour.

Discovery Days at St. Lawrence

Life at St. Lawrence Catholic School has never been so exciting. Staff and students alike are buzzing from all the great events that are underway thanks in part to their new initiative: “Beyond Kennedy & Lawrence”. This adventure was born from the staff’s commitment to meeting the unique needs of all students and with the assistance of the “At-Risk” funding.

On May 5th, the entire St. Lawrence community participated in “Discovery Days’. Students had the opportunity to choose from 11 experiences that were organized by staff. Thess adventures included; “Go Wild for Wildlife”, “A Day on the Farm”, “Great Gardening”, “Engineers! Monster Machines!”, “Go Camping”, “Chocolate Factory”, “T-Shirt Making”, “Junior Explorers” and “From Seed to Plant”. Each adventure was based on the idea that providing real-life, hands-on experiences would lead to meaningful writing opportunities.

Students were buzzing with anticipation, and upon return, the halls of St. Lawrence were full with tales about milking cows, exploring rainforests, feeding tigers, finding caterpillars, eating lunch outside and monster construction sites.

Over the next few weeks, students will be working on a variety of writing and art projects, which will consolidate their experiences. All of this effort will culminate in Showcase Day on June 17th.

Rugby powerhouse looks to provincials

SAM LASKARIS , The Mirror

05/26/04

The Senator O'Connor Blues have been steamrolling over their opponents this season. If the local high school varsity girls rugby team was able to notch another victory yesterday (Tuesday), then it is now preparing for the provincial championships. The Blues were scheduled to play Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School in the city's Catholic school final. That match, at Eglinton Flats, was held after The Mirror's press deadline.

The winner of yesterday's game earned a berth into the 16-team Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament.

The provincial event is scheduled for June 2-4 in Markham. Senator O'Connor last competed at OFSAA in 2000.

Though they did not win a medal at that tourney staged in Brampton, the Blues did return home with the most sportsmanlike team award.

As for this season, Senator O'Connor posted a perfect 4-0 regular season record in the city's five-team Catholic schools league. The closest game the Blues had was against Marshall McLuhan. Senator O'Connor prevailed 29-5 in that match. Marshall McLuhan was the only team that managed to score any points against the Blues in regular season action.

Senator O'Connor then advanced to the league final by blanking the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto (CHAT) 37-0 in their semi-final contest.

"We have some very good Grade 12 leadership this year," Blues coach Lorraine Kelly said.

Senator O'Connor has about a dozen players who are in their graduating year. The Blues also have a rather large roster. There are 41 players on the team.

"We have unlimited substitutions so they all dress for games," Kelly said. "We've gotten up to about 35 in one game."

Key players for the Blues this season have included Jackie McKeown, Kaylin Perchinig and Katie Ross. Kelly said none of the team's current players was with the team when it last participated at OFSAA. But she estimates as many as 20 of her team members were also on the Senator O'Connor field hockey squad that competed at its OFSAA championships in Exeter this past fall.

"A lot of them are graduating," she said. "They made it to OFSAA in field hockey. And now they'd like to make it to OFSAA for rugby."
