PRAYER FOR THE NEWLY ELECTED POPE

We pray for the newly elected Pope: Lord God, You are the eternal shepherd and guide. In Your mercy grant Your church a shepherd who will walk in Your ways and whose watchful care will bring us Your blessing. Give us the joy of receiving a shepherd who will be an example of goodness to Your people and will fill our hearts and minds with the trust of the Gospel. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

MESSAGE FROM THE CCCB PRESIDENT

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI Vatican City

Most Holy Father:

In union with our clergy and all the faithful in the Roman and Eastern Catholic diocesan churches of this country, together with the members of institutes for consecrated life and societies of apostolic life as well as of the numerous Catholic associations, organizations and movements in our land, the Bishops of Canada greet with joy the news of your election as Bishop of Rome, successor of Peter and head of the College of Bishops.

The ministry that you are beginning holds greater interest than ever to a world which has truly become a “global village” through the instant communications of Internet and the mass media. Aware of the global dimensions of its challenges and problems, contemporary society is searching for a universal pastor and teacher to proclaim the news of salvation, who articulates the joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of this age, and who reminds the followers of Christ that all which is genuinely human is echoed in the hearts and minds of the community of faith (Second Vatican Council, Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, no. 1).

Making our own the words of Saint Paul in his letter to the Romans (15.30,13), appealing through our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Holy Spirit, my brothers and sisters in faith join me in earnest prayer to Our Father on your behalf, that the God of hope fill you with joy and peace. Fraternally in Our Risen Lord, + Brendan M. O’Brien Archbishop of St. John’s President Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

SUBJECT: 14-5 Student helps battle leukemia East York Mirror , Mike Adler– April 18, 2005 Canadian Martyrs school student Elena Dobre is helping her fellow students learn about her battle with leukemia Elena Dobre, age 10 and winning her battle against leukemia, is helping her school understand and fight the disease. Vince Catalanotto, a teacher at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Elementary School, already knows what it's like. Years ago, he fought the same cancer, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), that Elena has now. Catalanotto visited Elena in hospital last year after her leukemia was diagnosed. "I told her to have faith. (I said) Your parents are there for you and the school is there to support you," he said this week. At an assembly today, Elena will talk about her fight and start a Pennies for Patients fundraising drive at Canadian Martyrs that will help its students put a face to cancer, said Alix Daubney, Greater Toronto Area school and youth campaign co-ordinator for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. Students who drop their change in collection boxes over the next three weeks can take pride in knowing they are contributing to leukemia treatments and to finding a cure, Daubney said.

CHILDREN CAN HELP CHILDREN Children can help save other children's lives and that's exactly what the school will be doing." A lively fifth grader who came to Canada from Romania two years ago, Elena is a normal girl despite what she's gone through, said teacher Jennifer De Sousa, adding she takes schoolwork seriously and is very good at math. "Her powers of deduction are lightning fast." Athletic, Elena is trying out for the school's cross-country running team. Last summer, water skiing was her favourite activity at a camp for children with cancer. We all have white blood cells to keep sicknesses from spreading in our bodies, Daubney explained. "When leukemia comes in, it stops the cells from being able to do their normal jobs, so (people) get sick." Many children think you can catch cancer from another person or that having it makes your hair fall out, Daubney said. Actually, losing hair is "part of the getting better process", she said, because chemotherapy treatments kill bad cells but also healthy ones, so patients lose hair. Leukemia kills more Canadian children and teenagers than any other disease. ALL is the most common childhood leukemia but its cure rate is improving, so eight of 10 children who have it survive. "Obviously, we want it to be 10 out of 10," Daubney said. People tend to hear only the darker side of leukemia and not about patients who make it and are healthy again, Catalanotto said. "People can beat this."

SUBJECT: 14-7 Soccer Panthers rely on newcomers for success Sam Laskaris, The Mirror Apr. 20, 2005 The Pope John Paul II Catholic High School Panthers may not be as dominant as they used to be, but the girls' soccer team strives to remain competitive. During the '90s, the Panthers would often dominate the majority of its league rivals. "Just for scoring a goal against us the other team would be so excited it was like it was time to declare a national holiday," said Panthers coach Selvin Davis. Pope John Paul II, which competes in the East Division of the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association (TDCAA), begins its 2005 regular season today (Wednesday) with a home game against Francis Libermann at 3:30 p.m. Last year the Panthers were ousted in their league quarter-finals. "We're still in a rebuilding phase compared to teams from previous years," Davis said. But Davis likes the makeup of his roster this season. "I feel much better about this year's team than last year," said Davis, who is in his 13th season of coaching the Panthers. "That's because of the influx of new players." Davis was still finalizing his roster earlier this week. He was expected to keep 18 to 20 players and at least eight of those are in Grade 9. "Most of them are rep players," Davis said of his rookies. "So that helps." Davis also said it is rather important to have a large roster. "The reason for that is some seniors have jobs and can't make all the games," he said. "I think economics is dictating what players you can have any given day." A total of seven clubs will compete in the TDCAA's East Division. Besides the Panthers and Francis Libermann, other entrants are Cardinal Newman, Mary Ward, Jean Vanier, Notre Dame and Senator O'Connor. The TDCAA also features West, South and North divisions. Each grouping has seven clubs.

Meagan's Walk a show of love and support The Mirror ,Carrie Brunet Apr. 8, 2005 Prior to her death children at Our Lady of Sorrows fabricated paper cranes for Meagan Bebenek (holding crane). According to Japanese tradition, 1,000 are needed to have one's wish granted Meagan's Walk a show of love and support

Little paper origami cranes: they're the one reminder of how it all started for Denise Bebenek, who lost her daughter Meagan to an inoperable brain tumour almost five years ago. Created as a symbol of hope by the kindergarten student's classmates before she died, the cranes are a Japanese tradition of well-wishing. For weeks, children at Our Lady of Sorrows fabricated the cranes, which according to Japanese tradition, 1,000 are needed to have one's wish granted.

The tradition began in Hiroshima, when a young girl, Sadako Sasaki, terminally ill from the residual effects of the atomic bomb dropped by the U.S., started creating paper cranes, her offering for peace on earth. She died before reaching her goal of making 1,000 cranes and her friends finished the project.

And so, five years ago, with 1,000 of the paper creations made, the children offered up a wish of healing and health to little Meagan on the front lawn of the school before her last MRI. But the tumour on Meagan's brain stem did not shrink, even with the innovative treatment she received at the Hospital for Sick Children. She died on Father's Day, June 17, 2001. She was barely five years old.

The cranes now sit on a desk in the Meagan's Walk office on Bloor Street. With five employees, 24 volunteers and the fourth annual walk approaching, Bebenek said the hardest part of her day is walking past her daughter's room. "Once I walk past that empty room, I can do anything," Bebenek said. "After that, everything is easy. But what is 'easy'? When you're a bereaved parent, that takes on a whole new meaning." Bebenek said she feels she's been preparing for this her whole life.

"I was in a terrible accident at 17 years old," she said. "I had a collapsed lung and my leg was broken in 22 places. I thought nothing could be harder than learning to walk again. I can't even compare that accident to Meagan's empty room." Every day, Bebenek brings her two other children, Sarah Grace and Matthew, to school and then walks the family dog. "That's when I meditate and ask for guidance to keep going," she said. "I've found a balance, I found that is a very important word -balance."

When Meagan died, flowers and letters piled up outside the Bebenek's central Etobicoke home. Today the letters keep pouring in. Now they are sitting in clear plastic bins in Bebenek's office. Just this week, she received letters from England, Scotland and Japan. "I get a pile of mail every day," Bebenek said. Next to her on a corkboard there is a photo tacked with a letter. "Dear Auntie Denise, I raised $5.60 for Meagan's Walk at my lemonade stand," reads the letter. "This is what it's all about," Bebenek said. "It's about the message." Meagan's Walk is a message of hope and compassion.

The walk ends in a hug around Sick Kid's hospital - a human chain, linking hands that embraces the hospital. The hug was inspired by Bebenek's need to wrap her own arms around the building that held her little daughter as she drove away on the day of Meagan's death. A few short months after Meagan died, a street sale raised money for Sick Kids in the little girl's name. Then, shortly after Christmas, a dinner/dance gala kept the momentum going and raised even more money for brain tumour research at Sick Kids. Since then, there's been a snowball effect.

People hear Bebenek speak and they want to get involved. And yet part of her wishes she could fade out of the spotlight. "With all due respect," she said. "This is so beyond me and beyond Meagan." The day of the walk, she knows she needs to stand on the podium and make her annual speech. She wishes she didn't have to. "I wish I could sit cross-legged on the ground with the kids at the event and just talk to them," she said. "I want the attention to be focused on the children. I want to be like the other moms there. Still, she finds comfort in the hug. "It's a universal medicine," she said. "It's for the children inside the hospital, it's for all the bereaved parents. It was fate that the event was scheduled for Mother's Day."

The first year of Meagan's Walk had to be held on Mother's Day because it was the only date available that necessary street permits could be issued. Michael O'Mahoney, president of the Sick Kids Foundation, said Bebenek's story has moved him and represents exactly why the hospital does what it does.

"The story of little Meagan and the walk on Mother's Day was one of the first moments when I experienced how this care translated to the Sick Kids community - and back," O'Mahoney said. "Denise's unique way of offering her message of hope - and Meagan's too - is profound in its impact on the walkers, and has been profound in its impact on me. I never cared so much before to do what I personally can to bring health and well-being to every one of Canada's children."

The community is responding to the message as well, with $435,000 already raised in Meagan's name. Toronto Community News is a media sponsor for the five-kilometre walk, which takes place May 8 from 9 a.m. to noon.

A kickoff to the walk takes place April 26 between noon and 2 p.m. at the hospital, 555 University Ave. Students from our Lady of Sorrows will once again have a crane ceremony in Meagan's honour and perform a song

written for her. Toronto Community News is a media sponsor for the five-kilometre walk, which takes place May 8 from 9 a.m. to noon starting at Queen's Park and heading to Sick Kids. Visit www.meaganswalk.com for details.

MAY IS ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH

Race and Ethnic Relations Multiculturalism encourages all schools and worksites to examine, discuss and share the many contributions from the Asian Diaspora that comprise our Canadian mosaic in keeping with the spirit of our Catholic gospel values and our board’s Mission and Vision of education. Under the leadership of Senator Vivienne Poy, the Senate of Canada proclaimed May as Asian Heritage Month on December 6, 2001 as a sign of respect and acknowledgement of the commitment of many immigrants from East, Southeast, Southern and Western Asia towards the growth and development of our country. A number of electronic resources, circulated to administrators, will inform learning opportunities for students, educators, parents and stakeholders. As individual involved in the education process, you are encouraged to weave these resources through curricula and professional development. Should you require additional information pertaining to specific projects, please feel free to contact:

Health and Safety … helping to preserve people, property and resources by preventing workplace injuries and accidents

WORKPLACE FATALITIES

NATIONAL DAY OF

MOURNING

THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2005

Each year, workplace accidents and occupational disease are responsible for a large number of workplace fatalities among Canadian workers. On average, three Canadians die each workday due to workplace accidents. Thousands suffer disabling injuries, may of them permanent causing enormous pain and suffering for employees and their families.

In recognition of these ongoing losses and injuries, the Canadian Labour Congress and the Federal Government have declared April 28, 2005 as “National Day of Mourning”.

To commemorate this day, workers throughout Canada are encouraged to observe a moment of silence to remember those workers who died from workplace accidents or occupationally related diseases.

All School Principals are encouraged to share this information during a staff meeting in April 2005. All teachers are encouraged to incorporate safety in their daily classroom activities

Secondary School Principals and teachers are encouraged to remind all students who are working part-time to work safely and to ask questions in the workplace if they are unsure about a job task.

Seven young workers between the ages of 14 and 24 died in Ontario workplaces during the summer of 2002.

If you have any questions, please call your
