Size matters:

Fabhian loses

7st 9lbs

“I was very nervous walking into the group for the first time but everyone was so friendly and I soon realised we were all there for the same reason. The support you get from the consultant and other members is amazing, I haven‟t looked back since and, at over 7stone lighter, I definitely don‟t have any regrets about joining the group. I recommend it to everyone… men and women!” Fabhian He‟s gone from 21stone 6pounds to 13stone 11pounds since October 2013 and has been named Hengrove‟s Slimming World Man of the Year 2014.

Research shows men are better slimmers than women and one Bristol man is certainly doing his best to prove that after losing over 7 stone. Data from Slimming World found that when men join one of the organisation‟s 11,000 groups they lose more weight than women, with male slimmers losing an aver-age of 6.1 per cent of their weight in three months com-pared to women who lose an average of 4.6 per cent in the same period of time. Fabhian is proof of the pudding. He spent years feeling unhappy with his weight and desperate to drop the pounds. But now, thanks to his local Slimming World group, it‟s a different story. On joining the group Fabhian began following Slimming World‟s Food Optimising eating plan, which is a big hit with men because slimmers can eat hearty meals with-out worrying about portion sizes and still lose weight. He says: “The great thing is you don‟t go hungry. It‟s about healthy eating – and man-sized, satisfying help-ings of healthy food too – not fads and gimmicks. Now I regularly cook and make my favourite meals in a low-fat way, so I can still have Burgers, steak and chips and roast dinners.”

Health and wellbeing As the pounds started to drop off, Fabhian found he had more energy: “Slimming World encourages you to boost your weight loss and fitness by becoming more active, but you can start as big or as small as you like. I started going to the Gym & Swimming, and before long I felt I could do much more and for longer periods of time. I can honestly say I feel like a different man since losing weight. Now I feel much healthier, and no longer suffer with back & knee problems I had suffered with before. I now love shopping for clothes, and have much more confidence.” Stacey Carter, who runs the Hengrove Slimming World group that Fabhian attends, says she‟s incredibly proud of him: “Fabhian is proof that men can benefit from getting support to eat more healthily and become more active just as much as women. He‟s a real inspiration. Lots of local men have joined the group after hearing about Fabhian‟s success includ-ing his brother, and I just hope that when other men read his story they‟ll feel more comfortable about join-ing a Slimming World group, especially now they know they won‟t be the only man there and that the research shows they‟re likely to do really well! It‟s extremely important because the obesity crisis doesn‟t just affect women – in fact, there are more overweight men than women in the UK.”

Eating Healthy Is

Childs Play!

When they are smaller, it seems it is so much easier to get our children to eat what we want them to and as soon as they learn to say „No‟, and discover other taster treats the problems begin and meal times can become a battlefield. With childhood obesity at an all-time high in the UK our problems with food have now reached an epidemic level. So how do you get your children to eat healthy options? Here are some tips to make mealtimes a slightly more har-monious & to help with overeating & weight gain... Lead by example

Unfortunately this has to be the top one. Children get use to certain patterns & behaviours and if you are not choosing healthy options then it is unlikely that your child will do the same. . "Your actions scream louder than anything you will ever tell them." Keep healthy food at hand Children will eat what's available. Keep fruit in a bowl on the counter, or table. Remember, your child can only choose foods that you stock in the house, if you don‟t buy it they can‟t eat it.

And will need to try it anywhere between 10-15 times before they actually eat it !! Offer a few healthy options

If you are starting to introduce vegetables/fruit then place up two different vegetables/fruit on the plate, then your child has the choice of which one to try. Be Creative A plate of cut raw vegetables and fruit on a plate can seem very uninspiring to a child, so make a dip of ketch-up or honey. Remember they are still eating the raw foods, which is packed with so much more nutrients than cooked food, so don‟t worry about the dips. Make it Fun

Making a game with food is a great way for younger children and some older children too. Blindfold them and get them to taste new foods and have a winner, reward all good attempts to even try the tiniest amount

Persistence For fussy young children, get them to just „lick‟ the vegetable or fruit, as a starting point. A young child may need to be exposed to a new food more than 10 times before they will even try it.

What about Desert or Treats? Try not to make this after every meal, leaving unhealthy snacks to a couple of times of week. Deserts can range from fruit & yoghurt and not everything has to have chocolate in it! For a healthy chocolate fix, cacao powder is an amazing alternative. Cacao powder is chocolate, but chocolate that is good for us (yes, it does exist!) and it‟s packed with loads of vitamins, minerals & anti-oxidants.

Beat the habit for

Are you one of the six million people in the UK who want to stop smoking? Well this month is “Stoptober” and so it is your chance to save your health and your wealth!

To help you quit, Melody Holt, Tobacco Control Project Manager for Roy Castle FagEnds, a community based stop smoking service, has plenty of advice… “Look at things from a different angle - you‟re not giving something up, you are choosing not to do something,” she says. “As smokers often light up at certain times of the day, changing your routine can help break habits,” she adds. “If the first thing you do in the morning is switch on the kettle and light up your cigarette, why not drink juice instead of a hot drink, or perhaps eat your breakfast, get washed, dressed or do exercises, first.” Staying hydrated can help you feel more energised. Melody says: “Sip plenty of water or fruit juice throughout the day. Orange juice is good to drink as Vitamin C levels are depleted when you smoke. Think about sharing with your friends, family, par-ents or carers that you have quit, or will be quitting and ask those who do still smoke not to smoke around you or offer you a cigarette.” Melody also suggests asking friends to quit with you. “This way you can support each other,” she says. “When cravings are bad.” Melody recom-mends you keep reminding yourself why you are quitting and focussing on the benefits it‟s having to your health.” For more information about Stoptober, please visit: www.stoptober.smokefree.nhs.uk or call: 0800 622 6968.

Stoptober 2014 – a nationwide public health stop smoking challenge – is encouraging smokers to swap their fags for gags, to help them quit for good in October.

Top British comedians including Paddy McGuin-ness, Al Murray, Simon Brodkin (aka Lee Nelson, Jason Bent and Dr Bob) and Andi Osho have been enlisted to bring a touch of the British sense of humour, and help smokers get t h r o u g h a 2 8 day quitting challenge.

The 28 day quit chal-lenge starts on Octo-ber 1st and people who take part will be provided with a range of free tools including a new stop smoking pack, a 28-day mobile phone app, text support with daily updates, quitting advice, jokes and tips for coping, as well as the encouragement and support from thousands of people quitting together through Stoptober social media channels.

After all, even if you smoke just five cigarettes a day then you will be spending, on average, £730 a year on the habit!

It‟s been estimated that half of long term smokers die prematurely and so lose an average of ten years of their life for this expensive habit.

The number of ex-smokers in the UK is greater than the number of people who actually still smoke. Alt-hough around 10 million people still light up, this number is falling, as 60% want to quit for good.

'When it comes to stopping smoking the only thing stopping you

stopping is the fact that you can’t stop, so stop stopping yourself

stopping and stop.' Al Murray

A Unique Opportunity To Invest In A Future Champion

Josh Day is a professional paint sprayer and motorcy-cle racer from Cirencester, Gloucester. Josh competed in the North Gloucester Road Racing Club Road Racing Championships in the 2007 season. This was his first ever race season - no motocross, no mini mo-to… No prior race experi-ence whatsoever. Despite this, he finished 13th in the Open 600cc Championship and 2nd in the Open Novice Championship. These re-sults were achieved on his standard Yamaha R6 road bike, with the only modifica-tions to race fairings and tyres. Josh was determined to progress quickly in his racing career and so, still on his 2006 Yamaha R6 bike, he entered himself for the first few rounds of the 2008 season Met-zeler National Superstock 600 Championship. His plan was sim-ple; see what level he could jump to during the first few rounds of the national championships, then complete the year gaining valua-ble experience.

But plans sometimes go awry. What actually happened would be beyond even Josh‟s wildest dreams. A number of top ten fin-ishes, along with a podium finish at Oulton Park meant that Josh finished the season in 13th posi-tion overall. Commitment, Drive & Passion

As well as riding in the Metzeler National Superstock 600 Champi-onship in 2008, Josh was also making appearances at club level with NG Road Racing. The Open 600cc Championship was some-thing Josh was really keen to win, but other commitments allowed him only to compete in 8 races. Even knowing that he couldn‟t complete the season, his passion and natural talent for racing shone through, and he came out with four victories, and three 2nd posi-tions. He finished the season 3rd in the final championship stand-ings. 2009 saw Josh again entered into the extremely competitive Met-zeler National Superstock 600 Championship. With Successful pre-season testing, the outlook was promising. Brands Hatch played host to the first race of the season, and Josh qualified well,

A Unique Opportunity To Invest In A Future Champion

only to be penalised with a ride through penalty for a jump-start while running in second place. The final results revealed that Josh still managed to finish in 13th position from 38 riders. Well aware that he had the pace to run at the front of the race, in the next round at Oulton Park, Josh was running in 3rd position only to have his race cut short after being taken out of the race by another rider on the first lap. The next round took him back to Donington Park where illness hampered his winning chances, he still managed to secure 8th position. A Test Of Dedication

Over the next few rounds his dedi-cation was put to the test. Due to technical problems he missed the next three rounds. This meant he was unable to secure any valua-ble points and make headway on the overall placing. Racing fit, Josh returned to Croft and it was obvious that he was aiming to win both points and his confidence back. This he did by coming 12th, and by Silverstone he was running at the front again, and finished the race in an unbe-lievable 6th place.

Champion & Record Breaker

Still passionate about road racing, and still dreaming of winning the NG Road Racing 600 Champion-ships, Josh juggled and coordinat-ed all his other race commitments and managed to compete in 12 out of the 14 rounds during the 2009 season. It paid off. With an impressive 11 wins, Josh took the title for the 600 Championship 2009. Josh entered the 2010 Metzeler National Superstock 600 Champi-onship. It was undoubtedly Josh‟s year. Seven pole positions, 3 wins and breaking two lap records at both Snetterton and Thruxton - this was just the start. Some races saw him leading with over 9.8 seconds over the rest of the field and at the final round at Oulton Park, Josh finally secured victory and took the Championship title. Today Josh still holds the fastest ever lap ever recorded for Brands Hatch, Thruxton and Knockhill circuits. Although these times were set in qualifying and not in the race. 2011 was to be a whole new ad-venture for Josh. He said hello to a whole new race championship.

Josh entered the 2011 MCE British Superbike Series, riding an Evo Kawasaki ZX1DRR. Although he hadn‟t ridden a 1000cc machine before , Josh‟s natural talent was still evident. Unfortunately, Josh‟s team were experiencing technical issues at the start of the Evo Championship, which meant he had to sit out the first 2 races. Riding Out The Rough With The Smooth

Undaunted, Josh waited until the team had resolved the issues. At Oulton Park Josh managed a top 3 Evo finish. But his bad luck didn't stop there. With a nail biting four rounds to go, the team he was riding for collapsed. Josh only managed 9 races out of the 26 available.

With 23 riders in the series, this meant his overall standing was 15th.and now without a team.

It is a testament to Josh‟s tal-ent, ability and determination, that within days he was pre-sented with and took up a rare opportunity to fill in for an in-jured rider in another team at the British Supersport Champi-onship.

This challenge covered the final 4 meetings of the season and included getting used to a brand new bike. With only a day for testing at Mallory Park, it was straight over to Cadwell Park, where Josh got to grips with the Su-persport bike. The 2nd outing on the bike was back at Don-ington Park and Josh skilfully managed to put the bike on the front row. Even though he had only competed in 4 rounds of the season, he finished the British Supersport Champion-ship against 36 riders in 21st position. New Adventures, New Bike

In 2013 Josh was chosen to ride the Be Wiser Kawasaki ZX1OR in the National Super-stock 1000 Series. The Be Wiser Kawasaki Team have been around the Superbike paddock for several years with great success. The British Superbike organis-ers for this year banned all foreign testing, which many

teams took advantage of be-cause of the guaranteed weather. The organisers deemed the foreign circuits too dangerous and too costly for a lot of the teams involved. This obviously had an effect on the 2013 testing programme, and Josh like many other riders who had joined new teams with new bikes, meant they would start the season with limited valuable pre-season track time. With approximately 60 riders trying to qualify for only 30 grid positions, things were very close and lots of riders were unable to make qualification. Josh, however qualified in all of the 12 rounds for the sea-son. He had some great top 10 results, including a 4th position at Donington Park with the World Superbike Series. Josh finished the 2013 season at Brands Hatch with a fastest second day qualification 1st. He was also fastest in free practice and managed to finish the race in 6th place. Josh has now formed a new racing team in partnership with Bristol‟s Ruby Scaffold-ing and is excited to an-nounce the new team - „Ruby Racing‟. Champion 2010

Now in its eight year, the Bristol Dragon

Boat Festival took place on 14th Sep-

tember. The festival features different

teams racing Chinese-style dragon boats

over a course of 250 metre. Dragon Boat

racing is steeped in mythology and has

been around for thousands of years in

China.

A daylong event, the Festival was exhil-

arating for the competitors, and thrilling

for the 1000’s of spectators, who

cheered along the racers while enjoying

the food and drink stalls run by local

Bristol companies. The racing is run by

leading events company Dragon Boat

Events who provide the boats, helms,

safety equipment, buoyancy aids and

rescue boats.

How does it work?

Short heats take place throughout the

day as teams compete for the fastest

time, culminating in one final race.

Crews of 16 paddlers, plus a drummer,

race in Chinese-style Dragon Boats over

a 250 metre course. Crews do not need

to be super fit or skilled to be successful

- all that's required is teamwork and a

good sense of fun!

This was the first year that the charity,

Sue Ryder, organised the Festival. They

were keen that the event supports a host

of different local charities, while giving

everyone taking part and watching a

fantastic day out.

Brandon Trust was one of the Bristol

based charities who had two Dragon

Boats consisting of team members from

BTR, Workout Bristol as well as the

Charity’s supports and beneficiaries.

Brandon Trust is one of the most innova-

tive charities currently supporting people

with learning disabilities in the UK.

BTR (Bristol Textile Recyclers) has

been working alongside Brandon Trust

helping the Charity to fundraise through

the recycling of textiles by helping to

organise clothes drives and placing

recycling stations throughout the city of

Bristol.

Founded in 1972, BTR Ltd is a leading

expert in the textile recycling industry

and works closely with schools, charities

and community groups. Over 100 tonnes

of clothing are recycled at BTR every

week. Based in St Philips Marsh, just

behind Temple Meads, BTR also oper-

ates a cash for clothes operation and also

welcomes members of the public to

contact them for a tour of their factory.

This was Workout Bristol’s first event

with Brandon Trust where members and

company owner, Craig Stevens, took

part and cheered from the side lines on

the day. Fitness Instructor, Taryn Chil-

ton, led the boat as the drummer on the

day as well as long term member, Steve

Palmer, giving an extra helping hand

supplying and setting up the Brandon

Trust marque.

Workout Bristol is based on North Street

in Southville and offers its gym mem-

bers affordable luxury with lost cost,

contract free memberships.

The Workout Bristol dragon boat team

consisted of: Taryn Chilton, Rachael

Newbury, Natalia Jozefowicz, Steve

Palmer, Rod Carey, Alexandru Atudosie,

Lia Popescu, Donna Worby, Cher Rich-

ards, June Atkins, Sarah Treweek,

Simon Chilton, Elisabeth Sheppard,
