Well, the URE Board of Trustees takes employee safety to heart and has truly demonstrated its sinceri- ty. Your board chairman, Jeff Wilson, recently partici- pated in a formal safety crew observation coordinated with our insurance carrier Federated Insurance. Strangely, the Federated Insurance safety observer commented that this was the first experience he had with a trustee of the board actually participating on a crew visit. Jeff’s report to the board about his experi- ence was enthusiastic and he recommended all trustees should participate in a future safety observa- tion and recommended it be a requirement. Windows provide our homes with light, warmth and ventilation. But when winter sets inthey can have a downside.

Placing your hand against a window pane ona chilly fall morning proves the point: if the panefeels cold, it’s a good bet you can reduce energycosts by either insulating your existing windowsor installing new, energy-efficient upgrades.

Insulating with draperies is a low-cost quickfix to drafty windows and can reduce heat lossfrom a room up to 10 percent. And they’re justas helpful in hot summer months by blockingsunlight. White plastic-backed drapes can reduceheat gain by up to 33 percent.

Interior storm window panels are another low-cost fix (available at most hardware stores), andconsist of flexible or rigid plastic installed over oradhered to existing window panes. Installation isfairly simple, and panels are either taped on ormounted with Velcro, magnetic strips or snap-inseals. Put them up in autumn and remove themin spring to reduce winter heat loss by up to 50percent.

If you’re in the market for new windows alto-gether, be sure to choose energy-efficient modelsthat will shave heating, cooling and lightingcosts year round.

Energy Star® has established a set of energyperformance ratings, tailored to four climatezones across the United States, to guide you inselecting windows perfect for your home. These

performance rat-ings are brokeninto several cate-gories, althoughthe two most basic are U-Factor and Solar HeatGain Coefficient (SHGC), which can be found onwindow stickers or packaging.

In simple terms, U-Factor measures how easi-ly heat can flow through a window, not countingdirect sunlight. The lower the number, the moreenergy efficient the window.

SHGC measures how much heat from sunlightcan be absorbed by the window. A high numbermeans the windowremains effective at col-lecting heat during winter.A low number providesgreater shading ability andmay be best for Southernclimates.

Here in URE’s serviceterritory, windows for theNorthern climate zone arebest. Look for a U-Factorof less than or equal to.35. You also can visitwww.energystar.gov formore details on our cli-mate zone and other crite-ria to consider when shopping for new windows.
