DIOGO VIEIRAmoto trial . 2012

Trial is a unique motorcycle competition whose purpose is not to arrive first, but to make a mi-nimum of faults ( standing on the ground) while overcoming various obstacles; trial bikes are also quite different from the common ones as they are lighter and more compact.

In Portugal, Trial began in the 70s in the north of the country, specifically in Braga and Oporto, as a recreational and entertaining activity (recre-ational trial is still practised nowadays by many supporters). The reason why this sport is, somehow, regiona-lized is due to the proximity to Galicia, the second Spanish region where trial is largely developed, besides the region of Cataluña.The trial competition is divided into several sec-tions where the aim is to get to the end of the area, overcoming the largest number of obs-tacles not allowing the rider´s feet (support) to touch the ground.

The sections are defined using natural obstacles (Outdoor competition ) or artificial ones ( Indo-or), in order to check the technique and skill of the riders. Each section contains, usually several different tracks so that the competitors can achieve diffe-rent levels, according to their ability.Trial can be practised both indoor and outdoor and each modality holds a world championship in which riders take part individually. Besides these two there is another league of teams, in which pilots participate together, representing their country, the Trial of Nations.

Trial is a demanding activity which requires hard work and deep commitment in order to achieve the required skills and balance, allowing riders to improve their performance.

That´s why, it is important to take into account some aspects, such as the age at which the pilot starts his contact with the sport. In countries with a great tradition of this sport, contact with the bikes and the Trial begins very early. In these cases, the pilots begin to drive Trial bikes at about 3 to 4 years old, and can get into competition at the age of 5 or 6. This early experience allows them to achieve high technical levels when they are young.

In order to increase the quality and quantity of riders in the sport, the FMP (Motorcycle Portu-guese Federation) has been developing a project since 1997: the “School of Trial.” It has proved to be a great implement, since the goals have been accomplished , as the number of supporters and riders has been increasing ever since.

DIOGO VIEIRABIOGRAPHY

Diogo Vieira is a promising young Portuguese Trial rider. Currently attending the 1st year of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engi-neering at the University of Porto, the 18 –year- old pilot has been practicing Trial since 2001. His career in the sport was driven by former trial pilot and at the time Chairman of the Trial Department of the Motorcycling Federation of Portugal (FMP), Osvaldo Garcia. During the first three years of practice Diogo Vieira won for three times the National Kids Trophy. He had a brief passage through the Open class, in 2004, where he was once again Trophy winner.

In 2008, aged 15, he debuted in the highest class of the Trial in Portugal, Elite, and he managed to be ranked fifth among all. In 2009 he stepped for the first time the podium of the National Trial Championship, reaching the 3rd position. For the following two years he ranked the second and so held a po-sition on the podium again. Diogo is now National Champion of Indoor Trial. His successful path was only possible due to the total support of the FMP, which has kept him in the project - School of Trial, although because of his age, this had been his last year in the project.

That same year, in Trial of Nations, he helped the portuguese se-lection to achieve the 11th position. In 2010 he participated in three of the eleven World Championship Trial, in Spain, (one day) and in Portugal (for two days) and ended the Trophy FIM - Youth 125cc in 21st position with a total of 10 points. However, he experienced some difficulties due to the excellent level of performance of the opponents. That same year he was again selected to represent Portugal at the Trial of Nations, having managed to achieve, together with the other pilots of the team, 12th position. In 2011, he reached the pinnacle of his participation at the national level, having been for the first time National Champion Indoor Trial.

Moreover he was once again selected to represent his country in Trial of Nations, ranking 12th. He also participated in two races of the World Championships (in a total of 12) and two races in European Championships (in a total of 6). SPONSORSCOUNTERPARTS

As regards the benefits to investors and sponsors, they will be able to see their brands advertised all over the European continent, with particular notice to Portugal, as it will be the country where the pilot will have a greater number of races (Trial National Championships Outdoor and Indoor). Unlike Spain and some European countries, where trial gathers a lot of supporters, in Portugal, unfortunately, this sport hasn´t achie-ved yet a high level of popularity and so the number of supporters is fewer than expected. Actually the support provided to the pilot, will enable him to parti-cipate in European Championship Trial while sponsorships will be highlighted and noticeable. The good physical shape in which the pilot is, along with the psycho-logical good form, do provide good performance over the next sea-son, either nationally or internationally.

The visibility of the brand will be present in the bike, the suit and in the driver’s helmet, taking the company´s name to various places of the country and Europe. Regarding to Portuguese Trial Cham-pionships, statistics show 500 to 1,000 spectators per event. In Eu-ropean and World Championships figures are substantially higher, having in average 5,000 to 6,000 people attending events in Euro-pe and about 10,000 in the World Championship trials. In addition to advertising in each event, the brand will also be broad-cast on portuguese television (most trial races have summaries on the national television - RTP2 Channel ) and magazines.

For all events of the National Championship Trial press releases will be sent to the media specialist and nonspecialist. Digital news can be found, nationwide, on the site of the FMP, and internationally in FMPtv in FIM-LiveTV. As regards the international press, you can also find news in several magazines.
