Meet the Teams – A beginners guide

The structure of football in Wales means the Club is divided into three sections:

Minis – For girls and boys aged 11 and under (ie School year 6 and below). All games are played against teams of

the same year age group and are friendlies. Home matches are played at Bryn-y-Don (weather permitting).

Juniors – This covers boys teams from Under 12 to Under 16. All teams play in their respective age group

leagues. Home matches are also played at Bryn-y-Don.

Seniors – Dinas have both senior Men’s and Women’s team, as well as a Second senior (Mens) team and a Youth

(Under 18s) squad. The senior Mens teams play at The Murch, whilst the ladies play at Bryn-y-Don.

First team

After the mixed start to the season the Dinas First team is looking to forward to the forthcoming Welsh Cup match and to building on their successes to date. Managed by Richie Garland and coached by Lee Saunders and Scott Cosgrove, the early indications are good for this young Dinas squad, and the team will go from strength to strength.

Under 12s Dinas have three Under 12 teams, just starting their competitive playing careers.

For the Lions, coached by Matt Benson, it has been a tough start to the season but the boys are improving with each game. They are working hard in training and Trevor has been a great help bringing the best out of the boys.

The Wolves, coached by Lee Saunders, have had a great start to the season scoring over 50 goals in their opening three games and conceding none. The hard work by the lads is certainly paying off!

(A report on Real Dinas will follow in a future newsletter)

Under 7s The Under 7s are just starting out on their football careers, coached by Trystan Foote and assisted by Craig Thomas, Brian Clifton and Jason Harries. The squad of 21 play early on Saturday mornings and are already showing their potential. It’s great to see the boys playing as a team and working hard in training sessions.

Under 15s

The Under 15s are coached by Phil Bushby, who has been helping coach the team since they were seven, assisted now by Danny Carter, Jasper Morgan and Lee Jenkins. Seven of the current squad of 17 were part of those original mini teams, whilst 5 are newcomers, having joined for the new season. The team trained twice a week over the summer and have started the season far better than last year. The opening three fixtures have seen the team win one, draw one and lose one narrowly, compared with last season when the team lost all of these fixtures. Last season they finished fourth from bottom but this season are hoping to do much better, with the aim of finishing in the top four. If successful, Danny has said he will take the team on tour at the end of the season! In summary the Under 15s are fitter, stronger and looking for a far better season than last year.

Thank you to all coaches, managers

and parents for your invaluable

contributions to the Club and

individual teams!

St Cyres Bid

The Club is committed to improving the playing and training facilities available to the club, and has been engaging with the Vale of Glamorgan Council to try and secure the inclusion of a new football pitch, training facilities and club house at the former St Cyres Annex site in Dinas Powys. At the moment the Council is preparing to tender the main site for housing development, with discussions on the provision of community uses expected to proceed once a developer has been selected. To ensure that DPFC are able to put forward a strong bid at that time, the Club have set up a working party to develop a detailed brief on what is required and investigate the expected cost and funding sources available. This is essential if the Club are to be in a position to make a credible bid at the appropriate time. In turn this is likely to require some expert inputs and thus fundraising for the St Cyres bid will be a key focus in the coming months.

If you are able to offer any help to the Working Party, please contact

Steve Rogers - [email protected]

Fundraising Although all club officials, coaches and managers are volunteers and are not paid, there are a number of unavoidable costs incurred by the football club on behalf of players. This includes FAW registration, insurance, the hire of match and winter training facilities, player and football kit, and the payment of officials for senior games.

DPFC is keen to ensure that the actual cost to players is kept at an affordable level and thus the money paid by players is supplemented by various fundraising activities throughout the year.

Club, Team and match day sponsorship is an important aspect of this, but with funding also going to be required for the St Cyres bid, the Club Committee are seeking to expand both the number and frequency of fundraising activity across the Club as a whole. To co-ordinate activities, help publicise events and hopefully increase participation, a Fundraising Sub-Committee is being set up, and it is hoped it will include at least 1 person (player or parent) from each of the teams.
