Digi-pak ResearchLooking into digi-paks, the format and layout, what they

include/ exclude and what a good digi-pak should

include.

What A Digi-pak Is.

A digi-pak is the album cover of which includes the CD, usually

a six sided leaflet which fits into the album casing. A digi-pak is

used to promote and sell the artist/star as well as the album

itself they usually include many images and a theme

throughout. Generally digi-paks would contain the track listing,

a background about the artist/band, quotes from the lyrics of a

song on the album or a particular quote from the artist

websites and links which lead to more promotion, maybe

merchandise for your artist and copyright information. In my

own digi-pak I aim to include all of these.

Digi-pak And My Artist. The first Digi-pak I will analyse is Rihanna's first debut album 'good girl gone bad'. This is because Rihanna is the main inspiration for our artist and so in research we can look at parts of the digi-pak which we like and make intertextual references towards Rihanna's.

This digi-pak contains Rihanna on all six sides, some of them are close ups and some of them long shots, on the back is a track list containing all 18 songs on her album which most celebrities will have on their albums. It is almost essential for an album to contain the track listing and I will make sure out artist 'M.Ria' has this on her album, the digi-pak is all about promotion as it is often the look/vibe that connects with the audience to sell the album. On this digi-pak Rihanna is displaying a dark album, the colours are grey and black with a slight lighting connection towards the blue, her cover relates to the title as it is Rihanna stood posing in a long dress showing a sophisticated, young woman however the dark colour scheme of the album implies otherwise and emphasises the title ‘Good Girl Gone Bad' showing a much sinister way of portraying her.

Future Digi-paksDigi-paks tend to stick to a colour scheme of 4 or less colours this is to keep it simple but still sell the artist. If an artist like Rihanna continued to do digi-paks for her albums or any artist for that matter people often ask if they can change the colour scheme since their last digi-pak and the answer is yes, simply because they used a certain theme on one album doesn’t mean they have to use it on every following album afterwards.

A Focal Point On Digi-paksDigi-paks contain focal points as in Goodwin's theory about music videos the exact same applies. Due to

the demands of the record label close ups may need to be used.

The colour theme of

red running through

all the digi-pak, the

roses emphasise

love and passion

but a slight danger.

A close up used may be due

to the demands of the record

label and to promote and sell

the artist, simple yet elegant

and considering no track on

the album is in fact called

loud this portrays her ora

and personality and keeps

the album simple not giving it

a complicated name.Printed on the cd, a lighter shade of pink

still containing a rose once again

implying the colour scheme.

A mediums shot of

Rihanna led on the

roses showing her

emotional feeling on the

album, love and danger

interlinks with the songs

and lyrics.

Lips to represent danger

and again infiltrating the

colour scheme of the

album, this for me is the

main focal point as it

seems to link everything

together, the emotion, the

colour scheme and the

title.

Versatility Of An Artist. An artist can display certain characteristics on one album and

can completely be transformed by the next, many things

display this on the digi-pak.

In this album digi-pak rihanna created yet another look

for herself which seemed to go against all her previous

images. Her newspaper themed album showed black

and white throughout displaying the media and

emphasising her importance. The colour scheme

linked in with the close ups of Rihanna which were

consistent and also black, white and grey, a few close

ups showed her smoking what appears to be an illegal

substance – rebelling against her nature and role

model which she should be showing, note that our

artist will not intend to take this route with her album so

explicitly however will use versatility throughout as well

as remaining consistent.

Page 7: Digi pak research

Other Artists.Other artist will still use the 2-3 colour scheme as well as

including close ups due to the demands of the record label.

Brittany used exclusive colours in her album as you can

see yellow, black and silver/grey were used, this may be to

show the different scales to her album - dark and light as

usually these colours don’t blend well together. Close ups

of her are used and sex appeal remains substantial, her

album is simple however intriguing and interesting.

In katy perry’s Teenage dream album bright and vibrant

colours were used and the CD’s display a doughnut and

candy, showing her innocent and sweet side. Her sexual

prowess on the album however displays otherwise as

she is led in the clouds made out of candy floss, the

colours all link together with the title as when you are a

teenager your life is free and you are bright.
