Fireworks
All around the world, fireworks enjoy the
love and admiration of different audiences.
In every display, it is no longer new to find
the spectators going “ooh” and “aah” over
the magnificent colours painting the night
sky. With this immense love for pyrotechnics,
it does not come as a surprise that many
entities try to establish various world records
that concern fireworks.

Here are notable world records linked to fireworks.
Dubai holds the record for the largest display, with its grandiose showcase
of firework prowess on the New Year’s Eve that welcomed 2014. The
Guinness World Records noted a total of 479,651 shells that were fired
during the occasion, all in the short span of six minutes. The display covered
a large area of the United Arab Emirates, spanning a distance of over 94
kilometres. The rate reached a total of 80,000 fireworks per minute, or
1,332 shells firing per second.
In the first minute of the
display, Dubai had enough
fireworks to break the previous
record set in Kuwait in 2011 –
which launched 77,282 in one
hour.

Portugal takes the glory for having produced the largest firework rocket in
history. Official data show that the
pyrotechnic weighed a total of 13.4
kilograms. It was launched at the
12th International Symposium on
Fireworks in Portugal on October
13, 2010 by the Associação Nacional
de Empresas de Produtos
Explosivos.
The biggest Catherine wheel came from Malta, manufactured by The Lily
Fireworks Factory. The said
pyrotechnic sported a diameter
of 32.044 metres; it received at
least one round of revolution on
the Our Lady of the Lilies festival
on June 18, 2011.

On August 23, 2008, Japan made history with the firing of the world’s
longest firework waterfall,
which was dubbed the
“Niagara Falls.” It measured
3,517.23 metres. The launch of
the waterfall took place at the
Ariake Seas Fireworks Festival
in Fukuoka.
The Philippines is home to the most number of firework rockets fired in 30
seconds. The efforts of Pyroworks International, Inc. used 125,801 rockets
fired on May 8, 2010, all of which
were lit up within 17 seconds.
These records show how much the
world adores lighting up the sky.
In the future, there might just be
bigger and better displays waiting
to make a mark in history.
