What is a Mineral?•A mineral is a solid that is

inorganic, naturally formed, and has a crystalline structure.

What are the three different types of

rock?•The three different types of rock are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

Igneous Rocks• Igneous Rock are also called fire rocks. They

form when magma(or lava if they are formed above ground) cools. If it was formed by lava it is called an extrusive rock and if it was formed by magma it is called intrusive rock.

The lava in this picture is slowly cooling, and turning into igneous rock.

Sedimentary Rock• Sedimentary rocks form when igneous rocks are eroded and weathered and flow in lakes and rivers. The tiny rocks are called sediments. The sediments float to the bottom and when more and more sediment build on top of each other it then hardens becoming sedimentary rock. You may find fossils in these rocks because dead sea animals float to the bottom, and then more sediment piles on top of it.

A good example of sedimentary rock is the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Metamorphic Rock• Metamorphic rocks are rocks that use to be

igneous or sedimentary rock. They change because when the igneous/sedimentary rock gets deep below ground, rocks squeeze the igneous/sedimentary rock and magma heats the rock making it change into a metamorphic rock. It is possible for a metamorphic rock to change into another metamorphic rock.

It takes time, heat, and pressure to make a metamorphic rock.(Images found at: library.thinkquest.org/J002289/meta.html)

About the Diamond•Diamonds are the hardest mineral

known and it can only be scratched by itself. It is non metallic and you can find it in may colors (pink, yellow, brown, etc) because of impurities, but most of the time it is clear.

Where to find a Diamond•You can find diamonds in places

like central and southern Africa, Canada, Brazil, Russia and Australia.

What diamonds are used for

•The most obvious use for diamonds are for jewelry. They are also used for blades that can be used to cut a diamond since the only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond.

What type of rock is Diamond found

in?•A diamond’s ore is a rock called Kimberlite. It comes from volcanos which makes it an igneous rock.
