CONNELLY, DEVILS CLIP WINGS, 2-0

Trenton, NJ - Shane Connelly stopped 27 shots for his fifth win of the season and J.S. Berube scored two goals, including a power play goal midway through the second period, as the Trenton Devils defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 2-0 in the first of back-to-back games between the clubs.

The first period saw both teams throw a quality rubber at the opposing goaltenders but Shane Connelly and Ryan Nie kept the door shut and the teams skated into the first intermission tied at 0-0, with the Devils killing the Wings’ only power play of the night. Nie had more action, facing 11 shots in the opening frame, plus several other scoring chances that didn’t produce shots on goal.

The Devils first two power plays of the night were fruitless, but with Jon Landry in the box for holding midway through the second period, Berube managed to poke a loose puck under Nie after Brad Miller’s shot from the point got lost within the traffic in front of the net. Berube’s goal was his ninth of the season and held up as the game winning goal. Ryan Ginand picked up the primary assist and Miller the secondary helper.

With the Devils carrying a 1-0 lead into the third period, Connelly was forced to make a few key saves to hold off the charging Wings and record Trenton’s first shutout of the season. Connelly had to earn the shutout by making his best saves in the final minutes, including a sprawling post-to-post stop with his right pad, to preserve the shutout and earn first star honors.

Berube iced the game by shooting into an empty net with nine seconds left in for his 10th goal of the season and received the second star of the game honor for his work. Ryan Nie finished with 37 saves for the Wings and was awarded the third star of the game.

With the win, the Devils stand at 17-25-1-3 with 38 points, while the loss drops Kalamazoo to 21-20-2-2 with 46 points. Trenton now trails the Kalamazoo by eight points for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff. The Devils and Wings battle again Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The Wings have been a member of the ECHL since 2009. The franchise began play in the year 2000, as a member of the now defunct United Hockey League. The Wings took their name in 2000 from a former IHL team, also called the Kalamazoo Wings, who existed from 1974-2000.

The Wings have won three championships in team history. Kalamazoo captured two Turner Cups as IHL champions in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and the UHL’s Colonial Cup in 2005-06.

Nick Bootland is in his third season coaching Kalamazoo. Bootland’s coaching career began following a 718-game professional career, when he played for the Hershey Bears (AHL), Cleveland Barons (AHL), Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL), Columbus Stars (UHL) and Kalamazoo Wings.

Two Wings alums with ties to the New Jersey Devils are Reid Simpson and Manny Fernandez. Simpson played 59 games for New Jersey, including nine in the club’s Stanley Cup winning 1994-95 season. Fernandez, a goalie with 315-career games in the NHL, is the nephew of New Jersey’s current head coach, Jacques Lemaire.

The Wings play in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a city of 80,000, located 140 miles west of Detroit. Famous natives and residents of Kalamazoo include New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, and actor/comedian Tim Allen.

#31 Shane Connelly made 27 saves in his fifth career shutout Wednesday vs. Kalamazoo.

KALAMAZ00 WINGSFRANCHISE OVERVIEWWith 27 saves last night,

Shane Connelly earned his second straight win, and the Devils’ first shutout of the season.

The shutout is the fifth of Connelly’s two-year professional career - four of his 13 wins with the South Carolina Stingrays in 2009-10 were shutouts. The 23-year-old collected eight shutouts in four collegiate seasons at Wisconsin and blanked four opponents during two seasons

of junior hockey with the USHL’s Chicago Steel.

Since his acquisition from South Carolina December 1, Connelly has appeared in 14 Devils games, including 11 of the last 16. He is 3-3 in his

last six decisions with victories Janunary 17 at Reading (a 2-1 shooutout win with 33 saves), Saturday vs Reading (a 4-2 win with 27 saves), and Wednesday’s 2-0 shutout of South Carolina.

Connelly also came off the bench Sunday vs. Reading in relief of starter Jeff Lerg, stopping all five shots he faced over the final 39 minutes of the game; the 4-3 loss was charged to Lerg.

The last goal Connelly allowed was Saturday vs. Reading when Dallas Jackson scored at 11:26 of the second period. In other words, Connelly has not allowed an opponent to score in 127 minutes and 43 seconds, more than six full periods of hockey.

With Jeff Lerg and Dave Caruso in the AHL for the time being, Connelly is expected to make most of the starts for Trenton, with Anthony Felice currently serving as the team’s emergency backup.

Connelly played 47 games between South Carolina, Elmira and Johnstown to begin his professional career. Including his 16 appearances for Trenton, his pro record stands at 21-25-10. The Cheltenham, PA native was a member of the Wisconsin Badgers 2005-06 NCAA championship.

CONNELLY Q&AQ: What was your favorite team growing up? Who was your favorite player?A: Well, I’m a Pennsylvania guy, so the Philadelphia Flyers were always my team. As for favorite player, being a goalie, it was Patrick Roy.

Q: What is your favorite hockey movie? Your favorite non-hockey movie?A: For my favorite hockey movie, I’ll go with Youngblood. It’s a shame that movie gets overlooked sometimes. And for non-hockey movie, The Dark Knight.
