Winnipeg native Darcy Zajac returns to Trenton after a 15-game stint in AHL-Albany, after playing 14 games for the T-Devils earlier this season. With Trenton, Zajac recorded his first professional goal, October 28 vs. the Gwinnett Gladiators at Sun National Bank Center. With Albany, Zajac’s lone goal came in Binghamton against the Senators on December 31. If Zajac, a former three-time member of the WCHA All-Academic team while at the University of North Dakota, can learn from his time in the AHL, Trenton will receive an improved version of a player who was already one of its best all-around forwards in the season’s first two months.

Myles Stoesz’s return to Trenton comes after the Steinbach, Manitoba native appeared in action with Trenton in each of the last two seasons. With the T-Devils, Stoesz has always been a physical presence, accumulating 127 penalty minutes in 29 games. Stoesz’s tendency to play the body worked in conjunction with an ability to chip in the occasional goal last season, prompting his first promotion to the AHL in his professional career. With the Devils’ AHL affiliates in Lowell last season, and Albany this season, Stoesz continued to show the attributes which earned him his call-up, registering 178 penalty minutes in 42 games.

Devils Swept in CarolinaThe Trenton Devils return to the ice at Sun National Bank Center

for the first time in 11 days on Wednesday night. During their 11 days away from home, the Devils played three games, all of them 702 miles from home in North Charleston, South Carolina against the Stingrays.

In all three games, the Devils stormed out to 2-1 leads in the second period, only to be overcome on all three occasions by a South Carolina club who finished the weekend on a six-game winning streak, after earning a four-game season-series sweep against the Devils.

Despite the Devils struggles as a team last weekend in South Carolina, a few Trenton players had individually strong performances with Dan Charleston and Ryan Hayes both registering two goals and an assist in the games, and Jeff Prough netting a goal and three assists.

Through the first nine games this season, Trenton’s leading scorer, and arguably its best player, was its captain Trevor Kell. With Trenton, Kell tallied five goals and nine assists, and was a plus-six, a rating that has kept Trevor the Devils’ team leader in that category all season. Kell returned to Trenton Tuesday, after he spent 21 games with AHL-Albany, where his most noted performance was a two-point, one goal and one assist effort against goaltender Michael Leighton and the Adirondack Phantoms, at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall December 5. A graduate of head coach Dale Hunter’s vaunted junior program with the London Knights with whom Kell won the Memorial Cup championship in 2004-05, Kell is a fourth-year pro who brings back with him to Trenton the added experience of a quarter-season tenure in the AHL. Upon his return to Trenton, besides being expected to contribute offensively, Kell brings leadership back to Trenton, as the Devils never replaced Kell as captain during his two-month absence.

ALL ABOUT THE NAILERS... The Wheeling Nailers are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins, and the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs (Montreal) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh).

WesBanco Arena, a 5,500 capacity building built in 1977, is the Nailers’ primary home for the 2010-11 season. The Nailers also are playing 10 of their 36 “home” games this season at Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The War Memorial’s noted place in hockey history is that it was used as the primary filming location for the movie Slap Shot (1977), serving as the home of the fictional Charleston Chiefs.

Elmira, NY native Stan Drulia is in his first season as head coach of the Nailers, having previously served as head man with Orlando (ACHL), Augusta (ECHL), Toledo (ECHL), the Port Huron Flags (UHL) and Port Huron Icehawks (IHL). Drulia holds a notable place in hockey history as his 479 points scored

with Belleville, Hamilton and Niagara Falls in junior hockey are the most in Ontario Hockey League history. Drulia later scored 15 goals and 27 assists in 126 NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Wheeling Nailers, originally the Carolina Thunderbirds based out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, played their first season in the ECHL in 1988-89. The Thunderbird were relocated to Wheeling, West Virginia for the start of the 1992-93 season, and were renamed the Nailers in the summer of 1996 to commemorate the city of Wheeling’s status as one of the leading nail-producing cities in the United States.Since its inception, Wheeling has promoted more players to the NHL than any other ECHL club, with Tomas Vokoun its most famous former player. Philadelphia Flyers head coach, Peter Laviolette, is also an alum. of the Wheeling organization, having started his coaching career by leading the Nailers to a 37-24 record in the 1997-98 season.

Page 4: Devils Extra 2011_01_12 Game 33 vs Wheeling

Tonight, the Trenton Devils oppose the North Division-leading Wheeling Nailers in the first of five tilts to be played between the clubs in January. So far this season, Trenton and Wheeling have played four times, with Wheeling winning both games at WesBanco Arena, and the squads splitting a pair of games at the Nailers’ alternate home, the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, PA.

One of the reasons for Wheeling’s success against Trenton has been a three-pronged attack of Kris Vernarsky, Ben Street and Andy Lord, with all three forwards having potted six points in the season series with the Devils so far. None of those three have been in the lineup of late for Wheeling, and Lord will remain unavailable, having played with AHL-Oklahoma City since December 26. Street will be back with Wheeling Wednesday, having played with AHL-Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the last week. Vernarsky was scatched Wheeling’s last two games. Also Wednesday, Wheeling has received defenseman David Urquhart from AHL-Hamilton.

Trenton, meanwhile, has reinforcements from its AHL affiliate, the Albany Devils. Trevor Kell returns to Trenton for the first time since November 13, Darcy Zajac since November 24, and Myles Stoesz since November 28 of last season. Goaltender Dave Caruso was promoted to Albany on Tuesday.

Wheeling Scouting Report* The Wheeling Nailers have a record of 18-14-0-2, and lead the

Cincinnati Cyclones by three points for first place in the Eastern Conference’s North Division.

* The Nailers’ offense has tallied 114 goals in 34 games (3.35 per game), which is the fourth highest rate in the ECHL. Wheeling’s defense has given up 103 goals in its 34 games (3.03 per game), which is fourth fewest allowed in the Eastern Conference. At even strength, the Nailers are plus-11, scoring 79 and giving up 68.

* Wheeling’s leading point scorer is rookie Nick Peterson, who has 16 goals and 18 assists in 29 games, ranking him second among ECHL rookies in points. The Nailers’ second leading scorer, Ben Street, is third among ECHL rookies in points, with 32 (14g, 18a) in 30 games. Street will not be available for the Nailers Wednesday, as he was recalled to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in early January.

* Patrick Killeen and Mattias Modig have shared most of the time in the nets for Wheeling, with Killeen having posted a 2.63 goals-against average and .907 save percentage while going 14-7-1, and Modig a 3.27 goals-against average and .891 save percentage in going 3-6-0. Modig however hasn’t played for Wheeling since December 15, due to injury. Peter Delmas has been signed to back up Killeen, but hasn’t appeared in a game yet for the Nailers.

* Having been successful 30 times in 163 opportunities (18.4%), the Nailers’ power play ranks seventh in the ECHL. But despite Wheeling’s relative success on the power play this season, they are currently ice cold in that department, having gone 0-for-12 since New Year’s. Additionally, the Nailers have given up seven shorthanded goals, which is the fourth most in the league in that category.

* Just as Wheeling’s PP is ranked seventh in the league, its penalty killing is also ranked seventh, killing off 155 of 183 chances against them this season (84.6%), while scoring five shorthanded goals. Since the New Year, the Nailers have killed 12 of 14 (86%).

Trenton Scouting Report*The Devils take the ice Wednesday with a record of 13-16-0-3, having

gone 1-2-0-1 since January 1. * Trenton’s offense has scored 103 times in 32 games (3.22 per game),

which is tied with the Alaska Aces for the 10th best rate of offense in the league. The Devils’ 117 goal surrendered (3.66 per game) are the eighth most goals given up in the Eastern Conference. At even strength, Trenton is minus-16, giving up 85 markers while scoring 69.

*Although blanked over the last three games in South Carolina, Ryan Ginand still leads Trenton in scoring, and is tied for seventh overall in ECHL scoring with 35 points (15g, 20a). Ryan Hayes is second on the Devils with 29 points (14g, 15a) and after a slow start to his first season as a pro, Hayes has crept into fourth place in scoring among ECHL rookies.

* After a carousel of goaltenders that has experiences injuries and acquisitions throughout the season’s first half, Dave Caruso and Shane Connelly have settled in as Trenton’s two regular netminders. Among the two, Caruso has carried most of the workload lately, starting nine of the last 10 games. In 16 total games, Caruso has a 3.33 goals-against average and .907 save percentage, while Shane Connelly made his first appearance since December 11 this past Saturday.

* After gelling on all cylinders throughout most of December, the Devils’ power play has leveled off lately, and it currently ranks 11th in the ECHL.

Mountain Lakes, NJ native Alex Smigelski is in his first season of pro hockey, as a member of the Wheeling Nailers, in 2010-11. A 2006 graduate of Delbarton School in Morristown, Smigelski parlayed his youth hockey experience with the New Jersey Rockets of Bridgewater, and Devils Youth Hockey at South Mountain Arena in West Orange, into a four-year collegiate career at Williams College (NESCAC). From Williams College, Smigelski earned an invite to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Rookie Camp this past summer, and was assigned to the Wheeling Nailers for the start of this season, making his pro debut October 15 vs. the Toledo Walleye.

Nailers’ Street & Urquhart Reassigned from AHLWheeling, WV – The Wheeling Nailers announced Wednesday that forward Ben Street has been reassigned by the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, while defenseman David Urquhart has been reassigned by the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL.
