Devils Split Two Games in ElmiraElmira, NY – After Matt Vokes’ game-opening score off a rebound from Dave Leaderer’s

initial shot gave Trenton a 1-0 lead 39 seconds into the first period, the Jackals steamrolled the Devils by scoring six-unanswered goals to pace a 7-3 Elmira victory Saturday night at First Arena.

Searching for their second win in two nights at Elmira’s First Arena, the Devils’ only lead of the night lasted 1:36, with Kevin DeVergiglio answering Vokes’ third score of the season off a set-up from Josh Brittain and Yannick Tifu at 2:15 of the first period. Even though Andrew Sweetland’s eighth goal against Trenton this season at 17:09 moved the Jackals ahead of the Devils 2-1 after one period of play, it wasn’t until the second period that Saturday’s game got away from Trenton.

Tyler Donati, John Kurtz and Josh Brittain netted markers past Mike Brown in the second period’s opening 4:46 to chase Trenton’s starting goaltender from the game, staking the home team to a 5-1 lead. With former Jackal Shane Connelly taking over between the pipes for the Devils, Elmira’s offensive onslaught continued with Yannick Tifu scoring his first of two goals in the contest before Jeff Prough stopped the bleeding for Trenton by scoring at 10:22. Prough’s eighth of the season, assisted by Justin Coutu and Matt Vokes on the power play, didn’t change the game’s momentum as Yannick Tifu scored his ninth of the season 4:48 after Prough’s score to give Elmira a 7-2 lead.

The Devils’ defense prevented Elmira from scoring in the third period, and Shane Connelly performed admirably by stopping 21 of 23 shots in relief of Mike Brown, but the Devils could not complete a comeback in back-to-back games. Jeff Prough scored his second power-play tally of the evening to tie Ryan Ginand for the Devils’ team-lead with nine goals with 5:11 remaining in the third period, but Trenton didn’t get any closer to Elmira as the Jackals went on to win 7-3.

Daren Machesney stopped 21 of 24 shots for the Jackals to earn the win in his Elmira debut to boost the Jackals to 13-6-5-0. By losing for the fourth time in the last five games, Trenton falls to 9-12-1-0. The Devils and Jackals will square off again at Elmira’s First Arena next Friday, December 17, at 7:35 p.m.

#16 Ryan Ginand leads the Devils with nine goals.

Potacco Q&AKinnelon, NJ native Mike Potacco was signed to his first-pro contract by the Trenton Devils on December 4, becoming the first New Jersey player to suit up for Trenton since Brick-native Carter Lee last season. Before turning pro, the 5-10, 185-lb. forward played four seasons collegiately at UMASS-Lowell (Hockey East) and three seasons of junior hockey with the St. Michael’s Buzzers (OPJHL). Growing up in New Jersey, Potacco laced the skates up at the high school level for Kinnelon High School and Barnstable Academy (Oakland) after a youth club hockey career with the New Jersey Colonials, Ramapo Saints and Devils Youth Hockey.

Q: What was your favorite team growing up? Who was your favorite player?A: Even though I grew up in northern New Jersey, I was always a fan of how Joe Sakic played, so I rooted for him and the Colorado Avalanche.

Q: In light of the Holiday Season, what was the best present you ever got? The worst? And what are you hoping to get this year?

A: When I was 17, I was getting ready to go up to Canada to play junior hockey, so my parents gave me their Durango to go up there with. That was the best. The worst was this holiday sweater I got. It was one of those hideous bright-colored holiday sweaters… I think I buried it in the back of my closet. This year, there are some hoodies I’d like to get and a Tom Brady, Patriots jersey wouldn’t hurt either.

Q: Is there a website that you visit everyday? If so, what is it?A: As much as I hate to say it, Facebook is probably on that list. I also go to NFL.com a lot.

Q: What is your favorite hockey movie? Your favorite non-hockey movie?A: Hockey wise, I have two: Youngblood and the first The Mighty Ducks. Non-hockey, I like Batman Begins.

Q: What is your favorite vacation spot?A: My sister lives in south Florida, so I like visiting her down there, going to either Fort Lauderdale or Miami. I get to see my sister and the weather isn’t bad either.

Q: If you had to make your own dinner, what would you cook yourself? A: Pasta with tomato sauce and some hot red peppers.

Q: If you could meet three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: Alexander Ovechkin and Tom Brady. I can’t think of a third person, so how about just Ovechkin, Brady and me.
