    GENERAL INFORMATION

    Cyclone®

    SPECIFICATIONS

The Cyclone Hand Hoist has been expanded toinclude trolley suspended units. The CM CycloneArmy Type Trolley Hoist consists of the light-weight, durable Cyclone Hand Hoist rigidlysuspended from a four wheel trolley. To suspend

the hoist from the trolley, the upper hook isreplaced by a pair of load bars. As a result, thecomponents of the hoist including the lowerhook parts are shown and described in ManualNo. 646. The manual should also be usedfor operating instructions, safety procedures, inspections and maintenance procedures, lubrication information, troubleshooting, hoist exploded view, parts list and load chain

    reeving information.

    Army Type Trolley Hoists

This compact trolley hoist features reducedheadroom, side clearances and end approachwhich make it ideal for operation in tight spaces.Integral trolley has hardened universal tread

flanged trackwheels which minimize rollingfriction. CM’s Internal Load Limiter™ automaticallyguards against damaging overloads withoutincreasing overall dimension. Capacities rangefrom 1/4 thru 12 ton - plain or geared trolley.Adapts to a wide range of beam adjustments.

    CM REPAIR/REPLACEMENT POLICY

All Columbus McKinnon (CM) Cyclone Hand Hoists andArmy Type Trolley Hoists are thoroughly inspected andperformance tested prior to shipment. If any properlymaintained Trolley Hoist develops a performance problemdue to a material or workmanship defect, as verified

by CM or an authorized service station, repair or replace-ment of the unit will be made to the original purchaserwithout charge. This repair/replacement policy appliesonly to Trolley Hoist installed, maintained and operatedas outlined in this manual, and specifically excludes partssubject to normal wear, abuse, improper installation, improper or inadequate maintenance, hostile environ-mental effects, and unauthorized repairs/modifications.

We reserve the right to change materials or design ifin our opinion, such changes will improve our product.Abuse, repair by an unauthorized person, or use ofnon-CM replacement parts voids the guarantee and

could lead to dangerous operation. For full Terms ofSale, see Sales Order Acknowledgment. Also, refer tothe back cover of Manual No. 646 for Limitations ofWarranties, Remedies and Damages and,Indemnification and Safe Operation.

*1/4 thru 1 ton plain Trolley Hoist can be adapted to 4” & 5” depth - American Standard Shapes (2 5/8”-3” flange widths) - at no extra charge.† Specify exact beam size when ordering.

    TROLLEY INSTALLATION

Operating the trolley hoist on a beam that hasno rail stops may allow the trolley hoist to falloff the end of the beam.

To Avoid Injury:Install rail stops at each end of the beam onwhich the trolley hoist is to operate.

The railstops must be positioned so as to notexert impact force on the hoist portion of theunit or the trolley wheels. They must contact theends of the trolley side frames.

Due to the variations in beam flange widths, itis suggested that the beam flange width bemeasured to determine the exact distribution ofspacer washers. The distance between track-wheel flanges (dimension “X”) should be 1/8 to3/16 inch greater than the beam flange width

for straight runway beams, and 3/16 to 1/4 inchgreater than the beam flange width if runwaysystem includes sharp curves. Also, the use ofother than CM supplied washers may result intrackwheel to beam flange variations and thusFigure 1 will not apply.

If washer spacing recommendations are not followed, trolley hoist may fall from beam.

To Avoid Injury:Measure the actual beam flange on which the trolley hoist isto operate and use Figure 1 to determine the arrangement of

the spacer washers for that flange width.

Immediately after installation, operate trolley with acapacity load over the entire length of runway ormonorail system to be sure that all adjustments andoperations are satisfactory.

When applying a load, it should be directly under thetrolley. Avoid off center loading of any kind. Side loadingmay spread trolley side frames.

On systems with curves, the edges of the rail at thecurved sections should be lightly lubricated with grease.

An excessively worn beam flange may fail and allowthe trolley hoist to fall from the beam.

To Avoid Injury:Periodically inspect the beam flange for wear. Replacebeam if flange is worn.

To maintain continuous and satisfactory operation, aregular inspection procedure must be initiated toreplace worn or damaged parts before they becomeunsafe. Inspection intervals must be determined bythe individual application and are based on the typeof service to which your hoist will be subjected andthe degree of exposure to wear, deterioration ormalfunction of the critical components.

The type of service to which the hoist is subjectedcan be classified as “Normal”, “Heavy” and “Severe”.

Normal Service. Involves operation with ran-domly distributed loads within the rated loadlimit, or uniform loads less than 65% of ratedload for not more than 25% of the time.

Heavy Service. Involves operating the hoistwithin rated load limit which exceeds normalservice.

Severe Service. Is normal or heavy service withabnormal operating conditions.

Following are the recommended, minimumintervals of inspection. When the unit is subjectedto extra heavy usage or dusty, gritty, moist, orother adverse atmospheric conditions, shortertime intervals must be assigned. During thePeriodic Inspection, inspection must be madeof all parts for unusual wear, corrosion effector damage in addition to those specificallymentioned.

    Minimum Inspection Schedule

    Frequent Inspections. These inspections are

visual examinations by the operator or other des-ignated personnel. Records of such inspectionsare not required. The frequent inspections are tobe performed monthly for normal service, weeklyto monthly for heavy service, and daily to weeklyfor severe service and they should include thoseitems listed in Table 1 of Manual No. 646.

Periodic Inspections. These inspections are visu-al inspections of external conditions by anappointed person. Records of periodic inspectionsare to be kept to provide the basis for continuingevaluation of the condition of the hoist.

Periodic inspections are to be performed yearlyfor normal service, semi-annually for heavyservice and quarterly for severe service and theyare to include those items listed in Table 2 ofManual No. 646.

Any parts that are deemed unserviceable are tobe replaced with new parts before the unit isreturned to service. It is very important that theunserviceable parts be destroyed and properlydisposed of to prevent their possible future useas a repair item.

    INSPECTION PARTS LIST

    ORDERING INFORMATION

The following information must accompany allcorrespondence or repair parts orders.

    1) Hoist capacity.

    2) Serial Number - this is stamped on the hoist

    frames as shown below.

    For parts orders also specify:

    1) Quantity desired.

    2) Key number of part.

    3) Part name.

    4) Part number.

When ordering replacement parts, considerationshould be given to the need to replace other items:bearings, fasteners, gaskets, etc. Items that may be

damaged or lost during disassembly or just unfit forfuture use because of deterioration from age orservice.

Using “Commercial” or other manufacturer’s parts torepair the Cyclone Hand and Army Type Trolley Hoistsmay cause load loss.

To Avoid Injury:Order all replacement parts from CM. Parts maylook alike but often CM parts are made of specific

materials or processed to achieve specific properties.

Parts should be ordered from CM’s Master PartsDepots conveniently located throughout the UnitedStates and Canada. Refer to page i of Manual No.646 to locate the Master Parts Depot nearest you.
