Renee BurkeLegend Yearbook AdviserBoone High School2000 S. Mills AvenueOrlando, FL 32806
Dear Mrs. Burke: I am very pleased with your journalism program at Boone high school and I believe that I could be a valuable asset to the 2011-2012 Legend yearbook staff. With one year of experience on the yearbook thus far, I would like the opportunity to contribute even more to the book this year. If accepted I will be sure to devote my time, dedication and hard work to this position.
Currently, I am a staffer on the Legend yearbook. I know that I am capable of meeting deadlines and working well with others when needed. With the experiences I have gained this year I believe I can handle the position of an editor. As a staffer I have seen what it takes to be an editor which is why I am applying to become next year’s business manager. I have good organization skills as well as people skills that I believe could benefit the staff a lot.
I am well aware of what this position would require of me, which is why I think it is the perfect fit for me. With my experience this past year in working with others, I believe that I can handle the money issues as well as whatever else it may bring on. I’ve enjoyed being on deadlines, so I would still like the chance to do that, as well as handling another position on staff. I’ve become very passionate about yearbook, and if awarded this position, I will always give it my fullest attention.
The following resume details my experience and I am confident I could handle this position on staff. I feel as though an interview with me would make you feel as confident as I am about this, and I ask that you please consider me for this position. Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Sincerely,
Delaney Arkeilpane

PERSONAL ESSAYjournalism
Aside from occasionally glancing at a newspaper, or flipping through my elementary
yearbook, my experience in journalism was lacking. After being on the yearbook staff in
eighth grade, my interest in journalism grew so I applied for journalism in high school. I
hoped that signing up for the class would help me decide whether or not I wanted to be
involved in yearbook. Over the course of the year my interest in journalism was sparked
and I made the decision to join yearbook staff.
I went into the year with an open mind but after being assigned my first deadline I
was unsure how to handle the task. Over time, I learned that if you plan appropriately, give
yourself enough time and avoid the stress of missing deadline, you will be successful. I
realized this while working on deadline four, so I changed my work habits in order to meet
deadline. Instead of waiting until the last minute to start my interviews, I began right away
and as a result it was the first time I ever met deadline.
I believe that success isn’t something that is just handed to you, but rather something
you have to work hard at. To succeed in this class you have to be extremely dedicated and
passionate about journalism. Otherwise, you won’t have the right work ethic and mindset
required to succeed.
Journalism has not only taught me a lot about layout and design, but also about
myself. Due to the experience I’ve gained from journalism, I am more knowledgeable
about the career path that I may choose to pursue, and as a result, I feel much more
prepared for my future.
Nothing could’ve prepared me for what this class had in store for me. I’ve learned that
you have to expect the unexpected, so that you can roll with the punches. And although
nothing could’ve prepared me for this class, nothing else could ever compare to it.
Journalism is the place that helped me become who I am. It’s the place most like home
for me on campus, and the memories I’ve shared and the things I’ve learned will last me a
lifetime.
Prior to my freshman year, I really hadn’t
given much thought towards journalism.
SELF-ANALYTICAL ESSAY
evaluation
Throughout the course of the year I feel that I’ve learned many valuable lessons
regarding this class. The hands-on experience I’ve gained has taught me multiple things
about actual production skills and so much more.
When I’m on deadline, interviewing people, or going through edits for my page I
learn a lot about the actual production skills most publishing companies’ use. Since we use
these same methods in the classroom I feel this puts me one step ahead of the game be-
cause I’m learning real-world skills making me more prepared for my future.
Sometimes during a deadline we share our pages. For myself, teamwork doesn’t
always seem as efficient as working alone, but over time I’ve learned that sometimes it is
helpful to collaborate and communicate with each other to make it work better.
During the summer leading up to this year we had to sell a full page advertisement.
Procrastination killed me on this project and what I learned from the experience was to get
an early start on your sales so you’ll have a greater chance of selling your ads.
Another valuable lesson I learned is that when I’m doing an interview or writing a
story it’s very important not to change the quotes from what they truly are. Sometimes it
seems easier to take the liberty of editing a quote so things can follow better but you really
shouldn’t. I know that sometimes when I’m crunched for time on a deadline it would be
the easy thing to do, but in the long run it won’t benefit you at all because you’ll continue
to do it and the consequences could be extreme.
The level of dedication yearbook requires is something I can’t forget. When you’re
applying for staff everyone warns you how much work it can be, but you never truly know
how involved it is until you try it. I’m glad I took it because I’ve gained extremely valuable
experience in writing, layout, photography, time management and working as a team to
complete a common goal – all of which will benefit me later in life.
When I think about yearbook I immediately think about the thrill of
being on deadline as well as all the hard work and dedication it takes.
REFLECTION ONEsignificance
Varsity cheerleading spread that I completed during deadline two. This was the first deadline I managed
alone and I felt it was also my most significant. Although my page went through countless edits from its
initial submission, I was very pleased with the finished product.
When I began working on this spread I had no idea what my purpose was which made this
work harder to complete. As I began sorting through pictures and brainstorming ideas for the story
my purpose became more evident to me. I came to the realization that my goal for this spread was to
incorporate as many seniors as possible into the page and also to make it look even better than last year’s
Varsity cheerleading spread.
Writing hasn’t always been my strong point, so when I first began brainstorming ideas for the
story my initial idea was a dud. In the following pages, you can see how my story evolved from my first
submission. When I first wrote my story, it had a negative angle to it, but with help from my section
editor I was persuaded to change it completely. In the end, the published story had a much more
positive outlook to it and I felt that it was a very substantial read.
Once I was finished with my story I began gathering pictures I considered I could possibly use
for the page. Since we were only in deadline two there wasn’t too big of a conflict of who I could use
on the spread which made my job a little easier. I also attended many of the football games as well as
the Braves Brawl in hopes of getting more pictures of the seniors that I wanted to incorporate into the
page. I shot the picture of the girls creating a pyramid during Braves Brawl and all three of the dominant
pictures during the football games.
During this deadline I learned not only how important it is to know your purpose for the spread,
but also to in your writing. After seeing the page in print I was very satisfied with the work I had done
with the dominant pictures as well as the story after all the edits and hard work I went through.
The most significant workI feel I’ve published this year was the...

I felt that even after this page was published it still could’ve used some more work. If I
had more time to revise it, I’m positive it would’ve looked better, but I tried to do my best
under the circumstances.
While working on this page I felt as though I learned a lot of valuable
communication skills. I was often interviewing or asking the Administrators at my school
questions opposed to the students I’d usually be talking to. Since their schedules differ
greatly from the students, I had to conduct these interviews during lunch or after school in
order to find a time that was convenient for them.
The first piece I submitted was the story and I knew well enough to find a good
story angle from the start. A lot of changes were made to the Administration staff this year
so I decided to make that my angle of coverage. In order create a better story we changed
the entire layout to make all the type fit. Due to this change I had to revisit some of the
staff for more quotes to enhance my writing.
I felt like this page was hard to cover because I wasn’t all that interested in the
content itself and there were many limitations holding me back. I would’ve liked to have
taken more pictures for the spread since I was lacking a little in that area. I tried to catch
them doing different things around campus, but I felt that there weren’t too many good
photo opportunities available and I wasn’t thrilled with any of the pictures I did shoot. This
meant that I had to rely on my other staff members’ pictures which involved searching
through hundreds of pictures to find the right one.
Part of the reason I wasn’t extremely thrilled with the final product was because the
content of the story itself just didn’t interest me that much. I would’ve liked to have made it
more exciting than what it turned out to be, but I think that under the circumstances it was
fine. The main thing that I learned while completing this deadline is that you’re not always
going to get your way, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t work as hard as you would’ve
if you had.
During deadline two I worked on the Administration spread.

REFLECTION THREE
best shot
I took this picture during a football game for my varsity cheerleading page. I was
struggling with this page as I tried to get a variety of different pictures for the layout.
When I began shooting my pictures of the cheerleaders they were somewhat dull.
I felt like I was having a hard time getting a good picture of them in action. All of the
pictures I kept taking were simply of them waving their pom-poms in the air.
After a little while of this frustration they picked up their sign as I readied my
camera. I held it steady on the girls in the front with their signs. As soon as I captured this
picture I was very pleased at the action and the emotion it displayed. I felt like this picture
had a good rule of third and filled the frame well.
Although I didn’t shoot as many pictures as I would have liked to, this particular one was my favorite.
REFLECTION FOUR
dedication
I was still learning how to handle my deadlines and pages this year, however, I still
gave it my attention when needed.
During deadlines one, five and seven, I split my page with another staffer. While
working on these deadlines I felt like I was a good asset to the staff by doing my job and
holding my commitment to my partners in order to finish our work.
Aside from those particular deadlines, I often worked on my pages alone. I felt like
I was a greater asset to the staff when I worked alone because I had total control over the
pages. It takes a lot more dedication and commitment when you aren’t with a partner be-
cause you aren’t relying on some else to finish the job, but rather yourself. As a result I feel
that I am more beneficial to the staff when I work alone.
This yearbook was a team effort, and I feel that I have contributed as much as I
could’ve as a staffer. Now that we have completely finished the book it is easier to observe
how much individual work I really put into it. Although it doesn’t really compare to the
work some of the senior editors have done, it’s still nice to see how I’ve helped. As an as-
set to the staff this year, I may not have been as great as I aspired to be, but with the work
I’ve done and the experience I’ve gained, I’m hoping to improve on that for next year.
As a staffer on the 2010-2011 edition of the
Legend, I would’ve considered myself to be an
asset, just not to the same extent as the editors were.
REFLECTION FIVE
overcoming hardships
I try to take everything that happens to me as a lesson in some way or another.
Being a part of the staff can sometimes be a lot to handle when you’re balancing it out
with sports, school, family and friends. Although sometimes it’s a struggle I’ve learned a lot
about myself because of it.
As it was my first year being a staffer I still had a lot to learn about being on a
deadline, writing stories and taking pictures. The biggest struggle I faced was with writing
stories. Prior to this year I’d never written for a publication and the style of writing is very
different then what I’ve known. There were multiple times when I had to rewrite stories or
go through countless edits. It was sometimes irritating to me, but it was a struggle I learned
to overcome.
When problems like these arose I had to learn how to overcome them. First I had
to remind myself that this was not a class I could just give up on. Yearbook is an actual
production; therefore there was no giving up for me. I learned that it takes a lot of effort
and dedication to be a part of it. I also learned that the hard work will pay off in the end,
and when the book was finally completed all the struggles I was faced with were well
worth it.
Situations that I considered a struggle like writing stories and learning all the rules of
yearbook were sometimes hard to know how to handle. When things built up and I was
short on time everything can became really stressful for me. Like anything else in my life
I handled these situations by allowing myself to become a little frustrated, so that I could
move on and overcome the hardships. By doing this I was able to finish the job better than
before because I allowed myself time to learn and accept things for what they were.
With everything that I’ve got going on I
sometimes feel like I don’t even have time to
REFLECTION SIX
biggest weakness
biggest weakness
Being that I had a lot to learn this year I named three of the biggest
struggles I felt I was faced with. The three that I named were meeting
deadlines, working better in a group and being more productive with my
time.
Since the mid-term I feel like I have been able to improve on all three of these
things. After setting my goal to meet deadline I actually did! During deadline four I was
one of the first to finish because I managed my time so well. I was very proud of how
efficient my work was during this deadline and it was a lot less stressful for me. I was
also glad to see how much I had improved, while working on this spread I was able to
accomplish two of my three goals I had listed during the mid-term.
The other thing I struggled with was working well in groups. During deadlines five
and seven I was given the chance to improve on this. In all honesty though I felt like I
hadn’t grown much after deadline five, but by deadline seven I was determined to improve
upon this. Kayla and I worked really well together on this deadline. Since we had junior
varsity baseball and softball she took baseball while I took softball. By doing this the
work was split evenly, rather than having one person write the story and the other cover
pictures.
All in all I feel like I have been able to overcome a lot of my publication related
struggles. I’ve learned numerous things about how to meet deadline, but I think the most
important thing I have to remember is to manage my time well. In addition to this I’ve also
learned how to work better with others. I know now that it’s important to communicate
well with others, so that I-’ll face less problems and in turn be more successful.
During the mid-term we were
asked what our greatest weak-
ness was (publication related.)
REFLECTION SEVEN
gold circle list
Y17. Academic Photo. The picture I would like to submit to this is located on page
111. I thought this picture would be a good submission for me because I wasn’t initially
expecting any credit when I took shot it. When the book came out I was proud to see that
I had taken a picture for a page that wasn’t mine. Not to mention it was also the dominant,
so I was very excited.
After looking at the CSPA Gold Circle list I
choose to submit the following three things.
Y4. Academic Writing. I’d also like to submit a piece of academic writing for this
year. This piece is located on page 54 in the book and it is titled “In With the New.” I
choose this piece because I feel as though it has an interesting story angle, whereas most
people might submit writings relating to student academics. I think it represents me well
because it was only the second story I wrote, therefore it was a struggle that I managed to
overcome.
Y9. Caption/Cutline. The last submission I’d like to make is for three of the captions
I wrote this year. The first caption I choose is also located on page 54. It’s the caption
relating to my dominant picture title “Can I Have This Dance.” Another cutline I felt
reflected myself is located on page 119 on is titled “Elbow Elbow Wrist Wrist.” And the last
one I’d like to including is on page 84 and is titled “Voice of An Angel.”
