As seen in leading clean energy markets like the People’s Republic of China (PRC), India, and the U.S., startups develop the technologies, business models, projects, and services required to drive down the costs and risks of deploying cleantech at scale. However, the few cleantech entrepreneurs in the region often face huge barriers such as lack of access to the risk capital and pilot customers they need in order to survive and scale-up. What can we do to better support entrepreneurial start-ups to accelerate the growth and deployment of cleantech in the region? Which enabling models, policies, and programs from around the world can we learn from and replicate? In this workshop, experienced and emerging cleantech startup entrepreneurs will share their experiences and insights with policymakers, industry representatives, investors, and other stakeholders on the risks and challenges they face and why early access to financing and potential customers are so important. The goal of the workshop is to share ideas on actionable initiatives that can support and help cleantech start ups in the region scale-up. Local entrepreneurs and start ups are critical to accelerating the large-scale adoption of clean energy and related clean technologies (cleantech) in the Asia-Pacifi c region. YONGPING ZHAI, TECHNICAL ADVISOR (ENERGY), ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK (ADB)Mr. Zhai is in charge of ADB’s overall energy policy coordination and technical support to energy sector operations. He develops energy sector knowledge work and interacts with worldwide energy sector partners. Prior to his current position he worked in energy sector operations in South and Southeast Asia, supporting renewable energy, energy e� ciency and power trade. Mr. Zhai also worked as a principal program coordinator/public utilities economist at the African Development Bank in charge of energy projects.
DANIEL HERSSON, TEAM LEADER (CONSULTANT), ASIA PACIFIC CLIMATE TECHNOLOGY FINANCE CENTER, ADB Daniel manages an ADB program focused on accelerating deployment, adoption and transfer of clean technology across the Asia-Pacifi c. He has more than 18 years’ experience in the global energy and cleantech industry. Daniel is a recognized specialist on venture capital, strategy, startups, and innovation. Previously, he was Director of Strategy at BP Ventures, a leading global cleantech and energy-focused corporate venture capital fund. Daniel is also co-founder and venture partner at Infuse Ventures, India’s fi rst early-stage cleantech venture capital fund.
RICHARD YOUNGMAN, CEO, CLEANTECH GROUP Since January 2016, Richard has been CEO of Cleantech Group, following 7 years of driving the company’s growth in Europe and Israel, and Asia. He has extensive experience in technology and investment research, and comprehensive knowledge of cleantech innovation, venture capital markets, and start-ups across Europe and globally. He is a regular keynote speaker at major cleantech events and is the driving force behind the annual Global Cleantech 100, a list of the world’s most promising private cleantech companies.

CODY FRIESEN, FOUNDER & CEO, ZERO MASS WATER Entrepreneur and materials scientist Cody Friesen is Founder and CEO of Zero Mass Water, whose product SOURCE is a solar panel that makes water from air and Founder of Fluidic Energy, an advanced battery company. He is the Fulton Engineering Professor of Innovation at Arizona State University and a Senior Sustainability Scientist at the ASU Global Institute of Sustainability. Cody was named by The Aspen Institute as a 2015 Henry Crown Fellow and is a MIT Technology Review “TR35” top innovator under 35 years of age. HENDRIK TIESINGA, CO-FOUNDER AND PROGRAM MANAGER, NEW ENERGY NEXUSHendrik is the co-founder of New Energy Nexus at the California Clean Energy Fund, a platform that supports clean energy entrepreneurs worldwide, also supported by ADB. He is also the co-founder and program manager of Free Electrons, an advanced accelerator program matching startups and utilities worldwide. He was a co-founder of Natural Innovation and the Finance Innovation Lab in London and a visiting research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley.

Ezysolare (India) is venture funded tech company that makes it easy to #gosolar by giving a one-stop solution for solar design, equipment and installation services online making it easy, cheap and hassle free. Ezysolare’s online platform for engineering and procurement for equipment used to build solar power projects connects solar installers with manufacturers of solar equipment.
Cropital (Philippines) is a crowdfunding platform that connects anyone willing to fi nance Filpino farmers. They aim to improve the income and productivity of Filipino farmers.
Electric Vehicle Expansion Enterprises Inc. (Philippines) is the only electric vehicle public transport solutions provider in the Philippines with actual fl eet operations experience.
Dichung (Vietnam) provides an online rideshare marketplace that allows drivers to trade free seats in their vehicles. They also work with transportation companies to o� er taxi sharing and vanpooling.

Horee I.C.A (PRC) aims to help solar customers improve their return on investing in solar by better forecasting and managing their power systems. Horee’s system/technology shaves peak consumption for customers and shifts load to optimize usage and eventually accelerate returns. Based in Shenzhen, PRC, Horee was founded by two young scholars from University of California, San Diego.

Okra Solar (Cambodia) provides a� ordable solar energy to people living in o� gird areas via smart, modular, mesh grid technology.
Promethean Energy (India) builds low-grade waste-heat-recovery solutions for industrial applications helping customers signifi cantly cut down carbon emissions. They work with large (and small) industries from automotive, textiles, dairies and processing industries to develop and deploy solutions to recover waste energy and generate hot water.
Global Himalayan Expedition (India) focuses on providing clean energy access , digital education access, livelihood access and wireless connectivity access to the remote mountain communities located above 12000ft sea Level. Reneon (Malaysia) focuses on providing energy saving opportunities ranging from energy audits to energy e� ciency solutions. Reneon’s proprietary energy monitoring system enables industrial customers to view real-time electricity consumption based on data collected from an array of wireless sensors installed at their facilities.
Science for Society Technologies S4S (India) has developed and commercialized a range of food dehydration technologies for farmers and industry. S4S works with over 1,200 farmer and farmer cooperatives under its solar powered dehydration initiative supported by USAID, UKAID, Gates Foundation and Government of India.
Solar Esco (Vietnam) provides turnkey solutions for solar water heating systems & solar power under an ESCO model for buildings, schools and hospitals.
Zero Mass Water (U.S.) develops, deploys, and monitors low cost, reliable equipment that uses solar energy to produce potable water. SkyEye (Philippines) is a drone service
