This annual Giving Team issue focuses on the keyplayers who offer a helping hand in our community tothose who are less fortunate or in crisis. Sometimes theirwork is heart-wrenching, sometimes it is physicallydemanding. Whatever the task, there is always someonein Camden County willing to step up and make adifference. It’s what makes us a strong community.
This Giving Team is made up of a few individuals, butwe know there are dozens that go unrecognized for therandom acts of kindness and good deeds that are carriedout on a daily basis here in southeast Georgia. From theparishioners in our churches to the children in our schools, all parts of our community contribute to the team ofvolunteers that make things happen.
The need for services grows each year, so if you havenot joined the team yet, I encourage you to give your time, talent and dollars to the causes that are dear to your heart.Almost every organization in Camden County welcomesvolunteers and most rely on them to exist. While we maynot be able to change everything that is wrong with ourworld, we can make life a little better right here on ourhome field.
Go team!

DawnEggleston-Wilson—QuarterbackLeading the nonprofit food program that
her mother founded in 1991 has been sec-ond nature to Dawn Eggleston-Wilson.She helped her mother, Gwen Thomas,
distributeUSDA com-modity foods to im-poverished families allover southeast Georgiafor many years. Afterher mother’s deathabout five years ago,Dawn not only tookover the reins as execu-tive director, but hasexpanded the organi-zation into six counties — Camden, Charl-ton, Lowndes, Cook, Dooley and Crisp. The organization employsmostly teenagersto operate its summer food program, butmentors those young people in other thingslike financial management, to make surethey have something to take away from theexperience. Our Daily Bread feeds about 4,000 kids
per day during the summertime and elderlyclients throughout the year.“The need grows tremendously from year
to year,” Dawn says. “Parents are having tomake some tough decisions.”Knowing that their children will not go
hungry frees up resources for other needs, she says.
Judge George Turner — CheerleaderJuvenile Court Judge George Turner Jr.
was nominated for his diehard advocacy forthe welfare of Camden County’s children. He was appointed to the position after
working many years as an assistant districtattorney in theBrunswick JudicialCircuit.Turner has an-
nounced his retire-ment, due to healthissues. By many ac-counts, his contribu-tions to the localjuvenile court systemand the young peopleit has served will en-dure long after he leaves the bench.“His dedication to the CASA program
has made it what it is today,” says BridgetWenum, director of the Court AppointedSpecial Advocates program, which workswith children who are in the court systemdue to abuse or neglect. “Even when he washaving struggles with his personal health, hegave all his energy to work for the best in-terest of our children.”
St. Marys Kiwanis Club— Special TeamsSome peoplemight think all the local Ki-
wanis Club does is organize great commu-nity festivals. While they do put on greatfestivals, theKiwanis Club uses the proceedsof those events to fulfill its internationalmission of serving youth — by promotingtheir education, health and good citizenship.Ron Szelist, St.Marys club president, has
been involved in the club for 26 years. Notonly was he able to fulfill his lifelong dreamof driving the Toonerville Trolley, which ismaintained by the club, but he has been in-volved in countless worthy projects over theyears. The club sponsors youth service clubs at
the local elementary, middle and highschools, the annual Helen Ruffin ReadingBowl, the Terrific Kids recognition pro-gram, college scholarships and the STARStudent and Teacher award programs. Theclub distributes meals at Thanksgiving andhelps support Christmas for Camden Kids,as well as some initiatives promoted by Ki-wanis International. All of this and morecomes from the money they collect at theannual Rock Shrimp and Fourth of July fes-tivals in St. Marys.“With any money we raise, 100 percent
goes back to the community,” Ron says.

Liz Rieling — Running Back“The kids keep me there,” Liz Rieling says when asked why she
is so passionate about her job at Court Appointed Special Advo-cates (CASA) of Camden County.Rieling is the program manager for the nonprofit organization,
which trains community volunteers to serve as advocates in thecourt system for abused and neglected children. The volunteersensure that the physical, emotional, psychological and educationalneeds of the children — most of whom are in foster care — arebeing met.Rieling applied two years ago for the position of program manager and today runs
the CASA front office, organizes fundraisers and juggles the school and work sched-ules of nearly 50 families to coordinate visitation at CASA’s facility in Kingsland.“Seeing the kids come in and knowing that they only have that little bit of time with
their mommies and daddies ... it's very rewarding,” Rieling said.
Publix Supermarkets — BoosterPublix Supermarkets promote a company culture that encourages employees to be
engage with and give back to their communities. That is truly evident in CamdenCounty, where associates at the Kingsland store give thousands of dollars from theirpaychecks to local charities. The corporate office also gives direct donations to a va-riety of causes in Camden County.“Publix makes contributions in the community to assist working people in emer-
gency situations and to address immediate needs of those affected by economic down-turns, hurricanes and disasters. Publix also supports school readiness programs,” saysShantay Gibbs, director of the United Way of Camden County. “In the past threeyears, our local Publix has contributed over $50,000 to Camden County.”

Train lovers linger at the
Folkston Funnel
Daytripper
Virginia may be for lovers but Folk-ston is for train lovers. The southGeorgia town of about 2,500 resi-
dents boasts a train-watching platform, called the Folkston Funnel, along the eastside of the CSX mainline. From that vantage point, enthusiasts can
listen for and watch the trains as theytravel the main artery north and souththrough Folkston. Viewers can spot trainstraveling south toward Jacksonville, Fla.,
and north toWaycross or Savannah at thesplit north of Folkston. The funnel has lights, ceiling fans and a
scanner so visitors can hear to radio trafficbetween trains. There are also picnic ta-bles, a grill and restrooms. The City ofFolkston opened the facility in 2001 tomake a growing number of enthusiastsmore comfortable.
As many as 60 trains pass daily throughFolkston, including six Amtrak trains. Five
nights a week, the Tropicana train haulsorange juice north from Bradenton, Fla.,to Kearney, N.J. Freight trains carryingvehicles, grain and materials also passthrough Folkston.
So do trains hauling coal from Ken-tucky, West Virginia and Virginia to coal-fired power plants in Florida.
You can find the funnel at the intersec-tion of the railroad tracks andMain Streetin Folkston.— Johna Strickland Rush

Nonprofit organizations are made up of some of the bestpeople I know inCamdenCounty. There are people whosit on boards and volunteer countless hours to educate
and also come to the aid of others in times of need. There are somany different organizations and they all add to our sense ofcommunity here in Camden. I thought I would share a story ofhow I learned just how much they care about our community. This past August, my family and I learned just what it felt like to
literally have only the clothes on our back. A fire destroyed mostof my childhood home, also the home in which we raised our ownfamily. The areas not destroyed were heat damaged and filled witha burnt smell I don’t think any of us will ever forget. The St.MarysFire Department arrived on the scene and were like angels sentfrom above. They were so compassionate and at the same timedoing everything humanly possible to save our home.At the end of the night when everything was down to ashes we
walked through to assess the condition and realized just how badit was. I remember the look on the faces of my family like, “whereare we going to go?” and “what are we going to do?” I had a pursethat was smoking. I begged the firefighter to let me in the backpart of the house where it was just a lot of smoke damage becauseif any of you know Carrie Gay, this chick was going to get hersome underwear. Remember yourmama telling you to always haveclean underwear in case of a crisis? I am here to tell you she wasn’tkidding. All of a sudden I was not in the driver’s seat like I am used to
being. I had no control and was incapable of making any decision.Thankfully, our family and friends stepped in and started makingdecisions for us. My teenage daughters — who that morning Iwould have thought their biggest struggle was what to wear outthat night — were suddenly making a plan about who wasspending the night at whose house and where our family pets weregoing. I felt like I was on the outside of a nightmare that I couldnot wake up from. My family all separated for the night and Ifound myself in my mama’s house and I smelled like a barbecuegone bad. She washed all our clothes that we had on and Iremember thinking for that moment that was all we had. It trulyputs things in perspective andwhat was important wasmy husbandand our three kids and the fact we were all OK. I would never callus normal even on a good day but we were physically all right. There are people who this happens to and they seriously have no
one to turn to and no one to help them like we did. I couldn’t stopthinking about those folks who in the past I had seen others in ourcommunity raisingmoney for and having bank accounts set up forpeople who had absolutely nothing left. I was surrounded byfriends who immediately started picking up the pieces and kicking
me back in shapewhen I would justfall apart. It wasseveral weeksbefore I couldeven go and lookat our homewithout fallingapart. Everychildhoodmemory I have is there, as aremy own children’s.An amazing thing happened to me. People came out of the
woodwork to help us. There were people who I knew but wouldhave never expected the outpouring of support that we received.Casseroles and envelopes with gift cards and cash started appearingat the front door of where we were staying that first week.Messages and phone calls came in from folks who were justwrapping us up in love and support. My daughter who losteverything was leaving for college in Atlanta five days after the fireand everyone in this wonderful community went into Project GetTori Gay’s Stuff Back Together for College. It was sooverwhelming that I could not look at these amazing peoplewithout eyes full of tears. Different organizations locally reachedout to us to see if we needed them and even if we didn’t theywanted to make absolutely certain I knew they were there if Ineeded them. The administration and teachers who taught mychildren over the past 12 years were there with open arms askingwhat we needed. Our church family at Our Lady Star of The SeaCatholic Church kept the meals and the hugs coming. There arecountless others whowill never knowwhat their gesturesmeant tous. A hug or your smiles helped us begin to heal— andwe are stillhealing.I know this column is a lot more serious and emotional thanmy
usual “Carrie Says,” but I wanted to reach out to you and say ifyou’re considering a charitable monetary donation during thisholiday season, I would ask you from the bottom of my heart tolook right here in Camden to where it all goes back to yourcommunity. It can be anything where people are out therevolunteering their time to make this place we call home a muchbetter place. I have seen firsthand how powerful they can be andI would hope you could find in your heart to give back to whatgives so unselfishly to all of us. A shout out to all the nonprofitsfromThe Party of Five ... You truly are making the world a betterplace.
