Caring for the Clergy One of the privileges of my job is that I have the main responsibility for the care of the clergy. In practice I share this with my senior staff and with the rural deans, but it is something I take very seriously. The well-being of the Church depends on the well-being of its leaders.

That doesn't mean that every problem in a church is the vicar's fault (or the bishop's). But common sense tells us that if the leader of an organisation is functioning well , it is likely that the organisation will be too. And if the leader is struggling that is likely to be evident in the organisation.

Ordained ministry is unlike any other job. Those who come into it as a second career often take time to readjust. Even though they bring relevant experience and transferrable skills, it takes a while to get used to a role where there is no manager or immediate boss, where you are responsible for your own working hours, time off and holidays, and where the borderline between work and leisure activities can be very blurred.

The bishop can and should give guidelines and make suggestions, but with large numbers of parish clergy and very few "senior" clergy there is no possibility of the sort of oversight that a teacher or social worker could expect. And with the Church of England's healthy tradition of parishes having a degree of independence (much more so than in the Roman Catholic or Methodist Churches where the local church is completely under the control of the diocese or the circuit) it would be a foolish bishop who tried to exercise that degree of control.

One of the suggestions I make to clergy is to have a "sixth day ministry''. That is, to spend up to a day a week on issues where priestly ministry can be exercised outside the context of normal day-to-day parish work. Full-time clergy are expected to work six days a week (and to have holidays which reflect that) , but if all six days are spent on their parish responsibilities they are unlikely to be functioning at their best. If up to a day a week is spent serving as rural dean, or offering training in the diocese, or sitting on the council of a missionary society, or running Street Pastors or a foodbank, that will be good for the priest and good for the parish.

Editorial Christmas is a time of goodwill and grateful thanks. This is particularly true of the band of people who make this magazine possible and ensure that it is delivered. Putting it together each month is made continuously easier because an increasingly large proportion of what comes in is already right to photocopy and only a small proportion has to be "set up"

Special thanks go this year to Shirley Tovey who has been masterminding the distribution in the town for a long time now and has done so very efficiently. Many thanks Shirley and heartfelt blessings to you and to Ron.

From this issue the magazines will be distributed from the Mayhew room-the precise details will no doubt work themselves out.

My thanks to Meg for her steadfast work and for her patience when I lose things, to Audrey who sets up those parts that need it and collects and delivers things in all winds and weathers. Bless you Audrey.

But there would be no magazine were it not for the efforts of those who provide regular copy and very few reading it without the efforts of the many who deliver.

Ten years since the price went up-there are very few instances of that- but we can manage to stay there for at least the coming year.

MOTHERS' UNION NEWS

November meeting A well-attended meeting welcomed MU speaker Margaret Hopkins who presented an afternoon on the theme of "Home". What an undervalued and poorly-regarded concept this has become these days - and what a lively and delightful afternoon we were treated to! Margaret began with the famous definition of Pliny the Elder "Home is where the heart is" and then introduced poems , even a little quiz, and music from Dvorak to Pop which all illustrated differing ideas of Home. Pliny to Pop in one afternoon! Where else would one hear such a far­reaching interpretation of what "home" conveys but at MU.

December meeting will be as usual in the Church Hall on Thursdav 121

h December at 2.15pm and will take its usual form of Holy Communion followed by a Christmas entertainment. We are pleased to welcome Revd. Dominic Coad to celebrate the service for us this year, and for the entertainment to follow the ever-resourceful Pamela and Gordon have come up with another Christmas-themed game. Remember the Christmas Tree "Beetle Drive" last year and what fun that was? This will be an "MU inspired Snakes and Ladders" - if you

can imagine such a thing! But come and find out.

Advent Cribs We have again performed the annual miracle of knitting !]lore than 70 sheep which are now making their way round the parish in three Advent Cribs. Congratulations and thanks to all knitters.

And finally ... Did you read the article by Rosemary Gooding in the November Families First on "What Mothers' Union means to me"? What an encouraging and uplifting one it was. In it she stressed the importance of wearing our MU badges not just for meetings but all the time, which provoked some amusing experiences of those of us already doing that - the retired Cathedral Dean whose reaction was "Oh is that still going? I haven't heard of it for years" to the Tesco checkout girl who said "Is that Mothers'Union? How lovely, my mum loved being in that". So it seems the message is "WEAR THE BADGE AND TELL PEOPLE". Bungoma diocese link thriving

Bungoma Link Co-ordinators Mary and Bob Garbutt, accompanied by Sue Tringham of the Mothers' Union, travelled to Bungoma, our link diocese in Western Kenya recently. Mary reflects on the visit.

We have had many good visits to our link diocese in the last ten years, but I can safely say this was the most positive visit to date. We spent eight days travelling visiting churches, schools, clinics and various other projects on behalf of the link and were very encouraged by what we saw.

Attending a Bungoma Link meeting we saw a new efficiency in the way matters were dealt with and the competency with which funds are being distributed to various projects. There is now accountability and a paper trail that would satisfy the strictest of auditors. Our hearts were touched on many occasions by the problems the people of region face day in, day out. The poverty, the increasing number of orphans, the lack of educational resources, medical facilities and clean water to name but a few. However we were delighted and encouraged to see the difference that the links are making. The Madeleine Community Support Centre and Academy is caring for 136 orphans and vulnerable children, giving them one meal a day (their only meal) and educating them with few resources. Kuh/wanda and Butonge Clinics are providing health care to their communities. New latrines have been provided in various schools. A young lady, sponsored through teacher training college by a link partner, is now a very able primary school teacher in Kimilili. A priest living in a very remote part of Bungoma with no proper roads and long distances to travel now has a motor bike. These are just a few examples of what a link can achieve.

Our "Send a Cow" efforts over the last three years have produced positive results and the "little red box" will be in church from Advent Sunday up to Christmas Day. I am thankful to all who have contributed in previous years and confident of your continued support Baby it's Cold Outside Certainly cold outside as I write this, thinking as I do it of as many reasons as possible to stay indoors to-day. But the concert will not leave you cold. Tickets are going well and disappointment might leave you cold so why not make sure of those tickets as quickly as possible. BROOKE NEWS

The Christmas season is fast approaching but life at Brooke goes on as usual for the time being, though preparations are under way for our popular annual Christmas Coffee Morning. Don't miss it!

Thursday 5th December 2013 at Rose Cottage, Brooke from 10am. Craft, Cakes, Bring & Buy, Raffle etc. Coffee & Mincepies with friendly conversation all for £1.

Sadly St Peter had some unwelcome visitors a few weeks ago and the donations box was attacked with some force. It was bruised and battered but resisted all attempts to open it and fortunately the robbers left empty handed, well, apart from a few candles. We feel lucky that they did not try to open or destroy anything else within the church and after some TLC the donations box is as good as new again. This month, of course, we shall be remembering the men of Brooke who bravely gave their lives in WWI, there are three of them Private Sidney H Burfield, Driver Herbert Molyneux and Private Joseph Royce. Sidney Burfield, originally from Suffolk, was employed by the P &O shipping line prior to enlisting in 1906 when he joined the Border Regiment and had served with them in India and Burma before he was killed by a shell while in action with his unit at Gallipoli on 13th October 1915 aged 30years. Sidney's father died when he was just a teenager, his mother remarried and came to live in Braunston and later Brooke, so Brooke became Sidney's home village. Herbert Molyneux was born at Brooke and was a coal miner in Nottinghamshire before enlisting in the Royal Horse and Field Artillery at Mansfield in January 1915, leaving for France in the August. He was killed during action near Elverdinghe, Belgium on 22nd July 1917, aged 30years and left behind a wife and three children. Joseph Royce was born at Gunby, Lincolnshire where his parents were farmers but during the early 1900's they moved to Rutland and farmed at Brooke where Joseph helped his father on the farm. He enlisted in the Northamptonshire Regiment at Market Harborough in May 1915 leaving for France on 2nd September 1915 and was posted

·missing in action ' at the Battle of Loos just 25days later aged 23years.

It was pleasing to hear that the church and parish of Brooke was to be remembered by Peterborough Cathedral in their prayers on Friday 22°ct November. Another date to remember is our cleaning day Wednesday 27th November at lOam when all are encouraged to lend a hand with simple tasks such as sweeping, dusting and polishing throughout the church. Many hands make light work, being a small church it does not take long and makes such a difference which is noticed by our visitors and regularly commented upon in the visitor ' s book. Coffee and biscuits being served to keep up the elbow grease.

Any report of our November highlight - commemorating our Patron Saint Edmund King & Martyr - has to be remitted to a later splash of GOOD NEWS from Egleton. The Patronal Festival season follows after the editorial deadline: we are still waiting to render our parochial anthem .... "EDMUND 's parish people now in his saintly name may vow Saint's companions to be found through engrossing daily round ... "

Christmas will provide another sterling reason for us "to lift up our voice(s) with strength" as we celebrate the Feast "of Him the angels all adored", that same Lord who inspired Edmund - to the uttermost! "Christ is born; the choirs are singing till the air everywhere now with joy is ringing".

The Service of Lessons & Carols, annual highlight celebration that it is, on WEDNESDAY, December 18th, will begin at 6.00 p.m. When once our hearts have been gladdened by the Christmas story, our prayers raised, our carols of praise resounded, there will be mince pies to savour and mulled wine to drool over! A proper and necessary refreshment for every, thankful Christmas minstrel!

There is that well-loved tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, wakened from his haunting, dream-filled Christmas Eve; how he rejoiced to find The Day had arrived .... "Christmas, I haven't missed it". No need, either for us to miss out on an incomparable Morning Celebration "of the Feast of Christ's Nativity". Welcome, then, to St. Edmund's on Christmas Day, at 9.15 a.m.

Scrooge's Nephew was pleased to rhapsodise about it, by way of persuading his blinkered Uncle to catch the unique spirit of Christmas ... "a good time, a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time, when men and women seem, by one consent, to open their shut-up hearts freely. Christmas has done me good and will do me good and I say "God bless it!"

Let's all say Amen to that! MERRY CHRISTMAS, with many blessings, dear Readers, for You and Yours!

HAMBLETON NEWS

The Wedding took place of Lisa Allebone and Guy Dewhurst on

Sunday 20th October 2013 at St Andrew's Church, Hambleton. Rev

Audrey Atkinson held the Service, Kevin Slingsby played the organ

and Araminta Mathias and her team rang the bells. Amanda from

Hambleton Hall had decorated the Church beautifully.

A Communion Service led by Rev Audrey Atkinson on

Remembrance Sunday, 10th November 2013, was followed by a

Dedication at the War Memorial and was attended by fifteen people.

The names of the fallen from Hambleton were read out. The

collection was sent to the Royal British Legion.

On Wednesday, 13th November 2013 a group of bell ringers led by

Robert Graves visited St Andrew's Church, Hambleton.

On Tuesday, 10th December 2013 Hambleton Hall will be hosting an

Evening Choral Concert at St Andrew's Church, Hambleton followed

by Dinner at Hambleton Hall (756991).

On Friday, 13th December 2013 at 6pm, St Andrew's Church,

Hambleton will be holding its Christingle Service which will be

followed by mulled wine and Supper in the Village Hall.

The Christmas Eve Service will be held by Canon Lee Francis­

Dehqani at 9pm at St Andrew's Church, Hambleton.

Scratch Messiah

60 keen singers practised during the afternoon of Saturday

November 16th ready to perform that evening in Langham

Church. The audience enjoyed a candle-lit rendition, with

solos from Ingrid and Miranda Heldt, Anne Blackett, Peter

Lawson, Philip Riley, Peter Sagrot, Alex Bower-Brown and

Kevin Slinsgby. Keith Hennis accompanied on the

piano/harpsichord, and the whole event was masterminded

by Kevin Slingsby. Well done Kevin for keeping not only the

choir, but the orchestra under control!

The choir enjoyed plentiful and delicious food during their

breaks, and huge thanks go to Hilary Welch, Trish Mobbs

and Ingrid Heldt for their catering and all the ladies (plus

Richard Braithwaite) for the cakes and refreshment

nibbles.

Churchwardens Debbie Sowter and Hilary Knight worked

tirelessly in the kitchen, making sure everything ran

smoothly and to time.

It was a joy to sing with so many from across Rutland, and

there seems to be great enthusiasm for another Scratch

performance. And you thought you'd retired, Kevin!

Village Carol Service.

We have a tradition in Langham that this is alternated

between the Parish and Baptist churches. 2013 is the turn

of the Baptists, and the service is at 3.30pm on Sunday

December 15th. All are welcome along, and this year the

service will be taken by John Haden.

Langham Posadas.

The 4 Crib sets are now on their way around the village,

staying at a different house each night during Advent. It is

lovely that so many families want to participate in this

tradition , and we look forward to a packed and joyous

Christmas Eve service which incorporates a celebration of

their return.

Geoffrey Wright passed away on November 18th. Geoffrey

had been a faithful member of our congregation for many

years, alongside his sister, Hazel.
