Andy Goodman was named president of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities, an association of the state’s private accredited institutions of higher education, in July 2019. Previously, he served as legislative director for Governor Asa Hutchinson. Goodman also served as chief of staff to Senate President Pro Tempore Jim Hendren during the 2019 Regular Session of the 92nd General Assembly and chief of staff to Senate President Pro Tempore Jonathan Dismang during the 90th and 91st General Assemblies. He began his work in the state legislature after serving as the director of real estate in the Arkansas Commissioner of State Lands’ office.

Goodman is a native of Conway and graduated from Harding University in 2004. He currently resides in Cabot with his wife, Chelsea, and their four children.

“As a graduate of one of our member institutions, I believe that our institutions are unique,” Goodman said. “Our schools are faith-based and not only help prepare our students for success in their professional careers but also create a path to service and leadership in their communities. I believe that AICU can help ensure that Arkansans will understand the value of private higher education.”

Near the foothills of the Ozarks,Midst of hill and plain; Stands our glorious Alma Mater;

Harding is her name.

Chorus:Sing the chorus, shout it loudly!

Echoing thro’ the vale.Hail to thee, beloved Harding!

Alma Mater, Hail!

Christian standard is her motto;Christian life is stressed; And in ev’ry branch of learning,

Each one does his best.

Harding opens wide her portals,Thus inviting all

Who would tread the path to knowledge, Heed then to her call.

Alma Mater

“Our God, He is Alive”

There is, beyond the azure blue, A God, concealed from human sight.

He tinted skies with heav’nly hueAnd framed the worlds with His great might.

Chorus:There is a God (There is a God), He is alive (He is alive),

In Him we live (In Him we live), and we survive (and we survive); From dust our God (From dust our God) created man (created man),

He is our God (He is our God), the great I Am (the great I Am).

There was, a long, long time ago, A God whose voice the prophets heard.

He is the God that we should know, who speaks from His inspired Word.

Our God, whose Son upon a tree, A life was willing there to give,

That He from sin might set man free, And evermore with Him could live.

Harding University has a rich history of quality education. Harding was char-tered as a senior college in 1924 when two junior colleges, Arkansas Christian Col-lege and Harper College, merged their facilities and assets, adopted the new name of Harding College, and located on the campus of Arkansas Christian in Morril-ton, Arkansas. The school was moved to Searcy in 1934, and the Board of Trustees approved a recommended change of Harding to university status in 1979.

Harding was named in memory of James A. Harding, a pioneer Christian edu-cator who founded Nashville Bible School (Lipscomb University) in Tennessee. He challenged his co-workers with an enthusiasm for Christian education that remains a significant tradition at Harding University.

At the charter, J.N. Armstrong, who had served five years as Harper’s president, became president of Harding College, holding the office from 1924-36.

In 1936, George S. Benson returned from mission work in China to assume the presidency of his alma mater. Benson directed the college from a deep indebt-edness into a state of financial stability, national recognition and academic accredi-tation. He retired in 1965 after 29 years of tireless service.

Dr. Clifton L. Ganus Jr., a 1943 graduate, served as president from 1965 to 1987. A former history department chair and vice president of the college, Ganus kept alive his predecessors’ drive for excellence by leading a plan of campus im-provement and expansion. At his retirement, Ganus became Harding’s first chan-cellor in 1987 and then served as chancellor emeritus from 2013 until his death in September 2019.

Dr. David Burks became the fourth president in 1987. A 1965 graduate, he has been a member of the faculty since 1967 and has served as dean of the College of Business Administration. Under his leadership, the University experienced record growth in enrollment and giving and, more importantly, placed significant empha-sis on Christian servanthood. The goal of his administration was the integration of faith, learning and living. Burks continues his service to Harding as chancellor.

Dr. Bruce McLarty, a 1978 graduate and the University’s fifth president, entered office in June 2013. Prior to this role, McLarty was the first vice president of spiritual life for the University, serving concurrently as dean of the College of Bible and Ministry until 2008, after which he retained the vice presidential role. As the result of his doctoral work, the University adopted his five-chapter curriculum, “Embracing the Mission,” which focuses on maintaining the faith-based principles Harding was built upon. With that focus in mind, the University seeks to develop the whole person through a spiritual emphasis in academics, athletics, Bible classes and chapel. Thus, Harding’s 4,879 students, representing 49 states and 55 coun-tries and territories, are empowered for ministry, church leadership and a lifetime of service.
