December / Diciembre 9, 2018 Second Sunday of Advent | Segundo Domingo de Adviento

Have you ever wondered about the meaning of the Advent wreath? Historians believe that Christians were using Advent wreathes as part of their spiritual preparation for Christmas by the Middle Ages. The symbolism of the Advent wreath is

beautiful. The wreath is made of evergreens, signifying continuous life. Pine cones, nuts or seedpods used to decorate the wreath symbolize life and resurrection. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul and the everlasting life found in Christ. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. Three candles are purple, and one is rose (or pink). The purple candles symbolize the prayer, penance and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass. This is a Sunday of rejoicing because we have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when our preparation is now half over, and we are close to Christmas. The light signifies Christ, the Light of the world. The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of His Second Coming. Many families choose to personalize their Advent wreath by including a white candle in the middle of the wreath, which represents Christ and is lit on Christmas Eve. Last Sunday, our Catechism families learned about the Advent Wreath from Father Raul and received small wreathes and candles to take home. What a beautiful Catholic tradition to follow at home with children!

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado sobre el significado de la corona de Adviento? Today there is greater acceptance of cremation as an alternative form of burial, an option that allow churches to open their doors to their members for this same sacred sanctuary, giving them a more intimate and spiritually

satisfying alternative for interment, in the lasting peace and dignity of their church. A Columbarium is a beautiful bronze vault in which are placed the cremated remains, the ashes, of the faithful.

prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate Christmas. Segundo Domingo de Adviento: En el Evangelio de hoy, Juan el Bautista nos insta a "preparar el camino del Señor" y de esto se trata el Adviento. is canned green beans, canned corn, and

Second Collection this weekened

The retirement fund for religious helps religious

communities care for senior members. There will be a

second collection this weekend for the elder retirement and

health-care needs of aging members. Please give to those

who have given a lifetime.
