DECEMBER 2014 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Steeple Bell

DECEMBER 2014 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Steeple Bell I learned to play chess when I was 10, and the medieval board game has been a pas- sion of mine ever since. My first instructor was a neigh- borhood friend, Buddy Tay- lor, and I still remember the thrill I got when, after several months of play, I finally beat him. To win at chess, you need patience and the abil- ity to think ahead as you try to anticipate your opponent’s potential moves. It also helps to be familiar with some dif- ferent strategies that have worked for other successful players in the past. Most im- portantly, though, you must know your various chess pieces and their purposes, abilities, and limitations. For example, it is imperative to know that the knight, sym- bolized by a horse’s head and seemingly limited by his ir- regular move pattern, often charges out ahead of the oth- er pieces to boldly attack, and is the only piece on the board that can jump over others while moving. It’s also impor- tant to know that the queen, the only “female” chess piece, possesses great power and in- fluence, and is very worthy of protecting. And no player gets very far without knowing that the lowly and underappreci- ated pawn, often the first one sacrificed, plays a crucial role when called upon to stand firm and protect a more highly-valued piece. The same basic truth applies if a church is to be successful and “win.” The apostle Paul wrote extensively about the early church, and much of our later understanding comes from his insights. In 1 Corinthians 12, he likens the church to a body consisting of many different parts, each with an important role to play. The feet, hands, ears, and eyes each provide a differ- ent but much-needed function, and each one contributes to the health of the whole. In Ephesians 4, Paul writes that some in the body are called to plant new churches, while others are to speak on behalf of the Lord. There are others in the body whose job is to reach out and offer Christ to lost people, while still others are called to pastor local congregations and make practical sense of Scripture. God’s plan is that everyone in the church has a spot and a function, a gift and a place to exercise it. Neither churches nor chessboards function well with too many bishops, and a body (hu- man or Christ’s) cannot move forward if everyone is trying to be the speaking mouth and no one the listening ear, or there’s an overabundance of eyes seeing future visions, but not enough legs willing to work to take them there. Find your passion, find what you do well, and you’ll find your place. – Bro. Jim
