December 2011

As the saying goes, time flies when you’re busy. The past two years serving as president of Lake Sherwood Association have certainly proven the truth of that for me! It has been an honor and my privilege to serve as president of Lake Sherwood Association, and I appreciate all the help so many of you have given me during my two terms in this office. As most of you know, Harry Tucker will be assuming the reins as president for 2012. Harry is a longtime Lake Sherwood resident and volunteer, and a familiar face as our Boat Ramp Manager. I know the Association will be in capable hands with Harry at the helm in 2012, and I know all of you will support him as you have supported me.

2011 was another productive year for Lake Sherwood Association. The project to replace the original wood subdivision entrance signs with new stone signs was completed over the summer. Our new signs are unique and will provide a timeless and distinctive gateway to our community for decades to come. Already, they have received a lot of favorable attention from folks throughout Commerce Township, Milford and other neighboring communities, and they were a perfect follow-up to the big road re-paving project in 2010. While I can’t prove it scientifically, I do believe the new signs and the new roads have had a positive impact on property values and home sales in Lake Sherwood. Existing homes seem to be selling briskly, and there are at least three new homes under construction at this time.

The Board has ideas for several other projects to improve our common areas. Questions about these proposed projects will appear on the membership survey included in the dues notice you will receive in early 2012. I know that many members also have ideas for Association improvement projects, and the survey will include space for you to provide your project ideas to the Board. Please be sure to complete the survey and give the Board your feedback and input on improvement projects you would like to see the Association undertake.

I realize I’ve been saying this for a while, now, but it I’ll say it one last time: Volunteers are critical to Lake Sherwood’s success as an association, and as a community. It took several years, and many hours of volunteer effort, to plan and implement the road

paving and sign projects which have so improved our neighborhood. It also takes a lot of Board and volunteer time and effort to publish The View, send email notices, update the web site, maintain Association properties, manage the Association’s finances, and organize special events, like the children’s parties, Music on the Lake, and, of course, the July 4th fireworks. If you are currently a volunteer, I cannot thank you enough for your contribution. If you haven’t yet volunteered, I encourage you to do so – I promise you won’t be sorry. Sure, being a volunteer has its frustrating moments, but the rewards far outweigh the frustrations, in my opinion. If making a real difference in your neighborhood isn’t enough to entice you to volunteer, consider the added bonus that it’s a great way to meet your neighbors and make wonderful new friends. For those of you who have recently moved to Lake Sherwood, it’s one of the best ways to learn about the neighborhood and become part of the Lake Sherwood “family.” Please contact Lori Karlow, your area rep, or any of the officers, to volunteer for an existing project or activity, or to propose something new that you would like to undertake for the Association.

While I am stepping down as president, I will continue as an active Association volunteer and, as immediate past president, I will remain on the Board as a director. I view my future role on the Board as that of an area rep for the entire Association membership, and I hope you will not hesitate to contact me in that capacity with your comments, questions and concerns so I can better represent you.

Again, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve this community as president of Lake Sherwood Association. I wish everyone in the Lake Sherwood family good health, happiness and every blessing in 2012!

* 2011 Highlights - Prior Year Dues collections made up a favorable variance of $8,325 due to a few home closings with chronic unpaid Dues. - Weed Control ran under budget for the year reflecting a favorable variance of about $13,000 - The Entrance signs were completed this year, and were paid for with money from our savings (just under $70,000) - As you can see from the Variance column, we will show positive results for 2011 of $47,943, a great result!

** 2012 Proposed Budget Notes: - Similar to previous years, the 2012 Budget column shows a Budgeted Loss. The Board tries to anticipate all necessary costs when preparing the budget, and the good news is that historically, we have come in below these budgeted expenses. - Even with this budgeted loss, the Board feels we can support this shortfall with Savings if we do spend the full amount. - With that said, we are keeping the Dues at the same amount as last year - $285 per lot. Dues have NOT increased for the 10 previous years, and we feel we can still provide the same quality service as in the past. - As can be seen by the 2011 forecast vs. 2011 budget (a POSITIVE variance of $47,943), the Board will not spend LSA money unless it is warranted.

We would like all LSA members to be on the lookout for the 2012 Dues notices, and ask that you provide the Board with ideas that you would like to see implemented throughout Lake Sherwood when paying your Dues in a timely manner. We are always looking for volunteers as well, so don't be afraid to step up.

Wishing you and yours a very Happy Holiday SeasonPaul MacDonald - LSA Treasurer

Annual Holiday Adult PartyThe early December Lake Sherwood Adult Holiday Party was held in the clubhouse at Beacon Hill Golf Course and provided a superb opportunity for residents to mingle with neighbors as well as previous LSA residents to visit.Guests enjoyed appetizers and danced to the live music of the band Mr. Moody, featuring Dan and Penny Shannahan of Inverray Lane. A big thank-you is extended to Dave and Katie Katzman of Windwood Court for organizing this popular event.

LSA October Dog ShowUnusually warm weather, loud yelps and wagging tails set the backdrop for last season’s Lake Sherwood Dog Show held October in Kendall Park. The event, sponsored by Dr. Carole Paveglio-Kiefuik of Clearview Eyecare, featured neighborhood dogs strutting their talents. Dog Show categories and winners include the following:Musical Sit: Stephanie Cox’s dog Kipper; Longest Stay (tie): Savannah Hewitt’s dog Abbie & Abbie Born’s dog Maverick; Best Dressed: Debbie Droncheff’s dog Nikko (stylish, wearing dozens of festive Halloween bows on his tiny Yorkie body); Best Trick: Mary Francis’r dog Princess; Best Catch: Megan Petersen’s dog Charley; Best Veteran (Oldest): Mary Francis’ other dog Buster Brown (10 years and 4 months.old); and Highest Jump (over a fixed bar): Stephanie Cox ‘s dog Kipper. Directing the event was LSA resident Cathy Brush of Driftwood who organized the categories & games, assembled the generous “doggie” goody bags, and arranged for a spectacular, professional protection dog demonstration. The dog demonstration was provided by nationally certified dog protection trainer Doug Loubdell of Doug’s K9 Training. Frightful to watch as Doug’s commands directed the German Sheppard dog to engage in a true physical attack onto a heavily-padded adult, the crowd stood in awe of the dog’s obedience to stop upon command. No blood was ever drawn and the obedient attack dog stopped chewing on the victim’s arm in a “New York second”. Concluding the event was a raffle for a complimentary dog training session. Winners of Doug’s K9 Training session were Pat Borders of Ravinewood and Mary Francis of Oakwood Court. Special thanks to LSA resident Linda Tucker who creatively crafted the festive dog scarves that were

given to all participants upon arrival. Also a thank you extended to Nalani Forester of Ravinewood for assistance with set-up and clean-up.

Children’s Halloween PartyCreativity was at its finest as Lake Sherwood children and grandchildren arrived to the annual Lake Sherwood Children’s Halloween Party in a variety of costumes. Some of the assorted costumes were Hannah Montana, Belle, Mario, Luigi, Greek Goddess, Smurfette, Medival Princess, Knight, Race Car Driver, Flo the Progressive Insurance Girl, Emperor of Evil, Ninja, Rockstar, Renegade Soldier and Waitress to name a few. The afternoon event, generously sponsored by LSA resident and realtor Susam McFarland of ReMax Classic, offered a variety of games with prizes followed by a costume parade. This year’s winners were Riley Bristow (Flo the Progressive Insurance Girl) of Winewood Lane; Madeleine Schouman (Modern Cleopatra ) of Tiquewood Circle; Jake Finzel (Extraordinary Lions Fan) of Ravinewood, and Anthony Flevaris (Werewolf) of Ravinewood. All winners received a bountiful box of individually wrapped, frosted Halloween-themed cookies, donated by the Milford Bakery on Main Street. Concluding the party was a drawing for a family 4-pack to the Avalanche Bay Resort Water Park, compliments of LSA resident Craig Bender of BSSI. Gladly accepting the winning tickets were Sandy Morris of Gulfwood Court, along with her daughter and grand daughter. This poplar event is made possible by the many volunteers who help set-up and tear down this party as well as those who assist with the games. Many thanks to Beth and Michael Powers of Leafwood Court, Nalani Forester of Ravinewood, Eric Detter of Leafwood Court, Amy Cheeseman of Inverray Lane, Vicky Schei of Stumpwood, Dave Katzman of WIndwood Court, Martha Klemmer of Tamwood Court, Jillian Schupach of Lynne Lane, Tom and Gloria Hughes of Commerce Road. Once again, without the generous funds from our sponsor, this event would not be the grandiose party that it has become.

2011 Holiday Lighting ContestResults from the Holiday Lighting Contest will appear in the Spring edition of the LSA View. At press time, the event has not occurred. Photos will be posted on the LSA web page shortly.

December 2011

Winter is the time to contemplate the projects for the Spring. Some projects scheduled for the fall were completed and some will be accomplished in the Spring of 2012. Projects completed in Fall 2011 were:• Bids were accepted and evaluated for LSA lawn care. Brien’s

Lawn Service will continue to cut the LSA parks and a-lots for 2011. A one year contract extension was approved and service will be reevaluated again next season.

• Ravinewood West a-lot was renovated with a new seawall and relocation of the docks. This should make the area safer and improve access. The cleanup should vastly improve the appearance, as well.

• The new entrance signs were cleaned up and the grass seed came in nicely. Some areas will receive additional seed and cleanup after the winter settling. It was decided at the GMM that there would be no further landscaping at this time. This will be reevaluated at the next GMM in Spring 2012.

• All of the old LSA signs were spoken for and now have new homes. If you claimed an old sign, please send us a photo when you get it installed.

• Snow removal for the entrances was approved for this winter, but we put it on hold until further review.

Projects to be completed in Spring 2012:• Due to weather delays the island seawalls will be

repaired in early spring.

I want to thank Jim and Lori Karlow for the beautiful job decorating the new entrance signs. The elegant evergreen sprays were just the right touch for the holidays.

(Photo of Lori Karlow, taken by Jim Karlow)

One last time I want to thank the sign committee for all their efforts, over the past year, in seeing to the successful installation of our new entrance signs. It was an amazing collaborative effort between residents, homeowners, and contractors. I list it this way because it was residents on the sign committee, homeowners that cooperated with the construction on their properties, and local contractors that offered serious discounts for exceptional work. Sign committee

residents were: Tom Hughes, Harry Tucker, Kathy Sawicki, Linda Tucker, Greg Woefel, and myself-Sandy Weber. Homeowners that participated were: Don and Jeannie Beaty, Steve and Pat Beaver, Mr and Mrs Pachan, Larry and Diane Grober, David and Terry Bandy, Randy and Peggy Wilcox, and Bill and Nada Ibrahim. Non-residents that participated were Tom and Sandra Philliben. Contractors that brought the designs to reality were Kim Ascherl(architect), Tom VanOyen(stone mason), and Greg Woefel(metal sign fabricator). It truly takes a village to do some projects.

I will continue to bring new projects to the table and hope that homeowners will continue to make suggestions for a more beautiful LSA. Please look for a survey in the Spring View issue.

I appreciate everyone’s efforts to keep the islands and lake safe and clean this past summer. I installed brooms on two of the islands so that residents could keep the docks clean. I hope it helped, but one of the brooms disappeared. I would appreciate it’s return or replacement.

It was the first year, in many, that the buoys remained undamaged for an entire season. This saves all of us money. Thank you. Residents are taking an active interest in maintaining the islands, parks, and a-lots. It saves money when everyone pitches in to help keep all of these areas clean.

Many areas are having clean-up days throughout the year. Please show your support and join us for an hour or two next year. Watch for notices in the View.

Many residents are taking a closer look at the drains located on their property. They are making an effort to clean the drain and make repairs. Remember, financial assistance can be requested to repair a drain on homeowner property. Please call or email me to investigate this process. Clean, effective drains are essential to keeping the lake clean.

Many homeowners have decided to replace or install a new seawall. Please remember that all new shoreline construction requires a DEQ permit and a Commerce Township soil erosion permit. It is also highly recommended that the LSA Board be contacted to insure that proper construction guidelines are followed. DEQ and Commerce Township will notify LSA about new construction. This is a safeguard for the homeowner. Not all contractors are familiar with the effects of water, ice, and pressure on seawalls and it is important to investigate the type of material and installation process that will be used. Studies have been done that show that some materials accelerate shoreline erosion, particularly shorelines adjacent to or across from new seawalls. Please be an informed buyer and follow appropriate procedures when changing your shoreline. It is important to protect all aspects of the lake.

I wish all of you a peaceful and safe holiday season. I look forward to new challenges and exciting ideas for 2012. Happy Holidays,Sandy WeberLandcare

POT HOLESOne sure sign of spring is the emerging POT HOLES in the street. If your street has pot holes, call the Oakland County Road Commission to get them repaired: (248) 858-4804

Also, there is an email complaint form on their website: www.rcocweb.org

Thanks for being a good neighbor.

If the hole is small and you don’t want it growing larger - there is also a do-it-yourself solution. Buy a bag of asphalt repair at the hardware store to fill the hole. That will do the trick and keep the small hole from becoming a big problem.

(Article from the Spinal Column December 14, 2011) Orchard Lake St. Mary’s senior Kyle Anderson, the son of Bob and Teresa Anderson, earned a top composite score of 36 on his recent ACT test, according to an ACT press release. While the number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, about one-tenth of one percent receive a top score. Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2011, only 704 of more than 1.6 million students earned a composite score of 36, according to the release. The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. In addition, some students take the ACT’s optional writing test, but the score for that test is reported separately and isn’t included within the ACT composite score. “While test scores are just one of the many criteria that most colleges consider when making admission decisions, your exceptional ACT composite score

should prove helpful as you pursue your education and career goals,” wrote ACT CEO John Whitmore in a letter recognizing Kyle Anderson’s achievement. ACT test scores are accepted by all major U.S. colleges, and exceptional scores of 36 provide colleges with evidence of student readiness for the academic rigors that lie ahead. Teresa Anderson said Kyle has applied for admission at six universities, including the University of Michigan, Harvard, Penn, and George Washington University. “He just heard yesterday that he was accepted by Georgetown,” she said. “Once he hears back from the others, then he’ll make a decision. He’s interested in political science, and particularly international relations. Those are his career interests.” According to Teresa Anderson, Kyle was a member of St. Mary’s cross country team for four years, and has been very active in the Key Club, the high school branch of the Kiwanis International service organization. She said Kyle held a state level position with Key Club for two years. Kyle’s older brother, Ryan Anderson, also earned a composite score of 36 on the ACT. Ryan Anderson was a 2009 graduate of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. According to Teresa Anderson, Ryan is attending the University of Michigan, where he is majoring in computer science engineering. He is a member of the university’s computer science competition team and is president of his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon. “(Ryan) is a member of Circle K, the college arm of Kiwanis,” she said. “He also was very active in the Key Club while at St. Mary’s. He has an internship set up for next summer with Boeing in Seattle. He is very busy and happy. He loves U-M, and may go there for his master’s degree, as well. “Kyle and Ryan are really each other’s biggest fans, and are very supportive of each other,” she added. “From a mother’s perspective, that’s a wonderful thing.”

CongratulationsKyle Anderson of Pikewood Ct was in the News (Spinal column Dec 14 issue) because of his perfect score on the ACT test. Kyle’s older brother Ryan Anderson also earned a perfect ACT score in 2009. Only about one-tenth of one percent receive a perfect score. Congratulations Kyle.

TO ALL LAKE SHERWOOD RESIDENTS:

Could it have been renamed the Lake Sherwood Half Time Performance? In a “sold out” crowd at Ford Stadium during the Detroit Lions vs. San Fran’s 49’ers on Sunday, a few Lake Sherwood residents performed at half time. Ledgewood resident Bill Crafts performed a solo as he participated in the Lady Jane’s Hair Studio’s Punt/Receiver Catch Contest. This event offers a guest to catch random footballs ejected from a machine. Bill was cheered on by over 40,000 fans and caught 2 of 3 punts from an estimated 60 yards. His remarkable feat rewarded the entire crowd with haircut discounts. Next, the Lakeland Broncos (elementary students) Junior Varsity’s “Silver Team” demonstrated their offensive and defensive skills as they played against Hartland Eagles. Lake Sherwood young players, under the direction of coach Tony Curvey of Ravinewood, included Bennett Ellwood of Windwood Court, as well as Jack Curvey

and Jack Butler both of Ravinewood. Also performing during the Bronco’s half time performance were the Bronco’s cheerleading team, which included Danielle Kleckner of Ledgewood. (it should be noted that there may have been other Lake Sherwood residents participating, but this eye-spy fan only recognized the above)

Gloria Hughes This fall we attended one of HVS Equestrian competitions at Milford High School. We want to thank Hannah Cutler (Stumpwood) and Jenna MacDonald (Ravinewood) for riding over to where we were standing. It made for a very special afternoon for us to be up close to the horses and be given a personal account of the event.

Harry and Linda Tucker Congratulations to Jessie MacDonald and her teamfor taking Ist place in C division and going to state’s.

The following are the minutes of the Lake Sherwood Association General Membership Meeting on October 20, 2011. These minutes are subject to the approval of the membership.

Business Meeting

President Kathy Sawicki welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order at 7:31 pm. An attendance of approximately 50 exceeded the required quorum. She reminded the group that the primary purpose of the evening’s meeting was to review and approve the 2012 LSA budget and annual dues and the election of officers.

Officer Reports

President’s Report

Kathy expressed her thanks for the opportunity to serve as LSA President and reminded all that her term would be up at the end of the year. She also thanked the Sign Committee, specifically Sandy Weber, Linda and Harry Tucker and Tom Hughes for their efforts. Kathy remarked that the new signs serve as a wonderful reflection of our neighborhood and heightens the awareness of Lake Sherwood as a great place to live. She added that such beautification efforts also help property values.

Paul MacDonald formally thanked Kathy for her years of service and the audience warmly recognized her hard work and dedication to Lake Sherwood.

Recording Secretary

The minutes of the previous general membership meeting (April 21, 2011) were accepted as prepared by Cheryl Miller by unanimous consent as they appeared in the June issue of The View.

Corresponding Secretary’s Report

Sandy Biebel was unable to attend so Kathy provided her report. She urged all to look for an email with the deadline for the next issue of The View. She again announced that a volunteer is needed to assist with advertisements.

Approval of 2012 Budget and Dues

Paul MacDonald referenced page 9 of the current issue of The View which details the proposed 2012 LSA budget as well as the forecasted budget for 2011. He provided the following highlights:

•There was a budgeted loss for 2011 of $86,389, due in part to the $70,000 expenditure for the entrance signs, (using savings to cover this overage). The forecasted year-end results will come in under budget showing a positive variance of around $28,700 given what we feel we will spend through Dec 31.

•Collection of prior years dues resulted in a favorable variance; and 28 residents have not paid 2011 dues (out of a total of 629 homes)

•Weed control was under budget by approximately $13,000

General Membership Meeting

Continuation ofDRAFT Minutes from October 2011

General Membership MeetingConcerning the proposed 2012 budget, Paul noted that, as in past years, there is a budgeted loss. While the Board tries to anticipate all necessary costs when preparing the budget, he indicated that the final year-end numbers typically results in below budgeted expenses. Even with the proposed budgeted loss for 2012, Paul remarked that the Board feels we can support this potential shortfall with Savings should we spend the full amount.

Sandy Weber reviewed the notes from the Beautification and Maintenance committee’s 2012 budget discussion that detailed all budget line items. A new proposed project was to build a gazebo at the boat ramp. After significant discussion, it was suggested that this issue be tabled until later in 2012 when more details were available.

On behalf of the Board, Paul recommended keeping the dues at the same amount as last year - $285 per lot. He added that dues have not increased in 10 years while still providing the same level of quality service as in the past.

A motion was made by Linda Gepper and seconded by Harry Tucker to approve the budget and annual dues as recommended. The motion was passed unanimously.

Election of 2012 Officers

The ballot for officers and Area Reps was reviewed and included the following:

President: Harry TuckerVice President: Brad HynesRecording Secretary: Cheryl MillerCorresponding Secretary: Sandy BiebelTreasurer: Paul MacDonaldArea #2: Gloria HughesArea #4: Larry GroberArea #6: Dan GitreArea #8: Tony AdamsArea #10: Sandy Weber

At 8:26 pm, a motion was made by Steve Koester, and seconded by Jeff Bristow, to accept the ballot of nominees as proposed. The motion carried unanimously.

Committee Reports

Lakes Committee: Linda Tucker reported that due to the high water level, some of the boards have already been removed from the dam. Consistent with prior years, the final boards will be removed around November 1 to get lake down to the appropriate winter level. Since 2003, muskrat trapping will again be done during the state’s approved timeframe of November 10 through January 31. John Dixon, Small Animal Trapping, knows the lake well and will keep the pelts for his service. The fish stocking will be done on Saturday, October 22nd and everyone is urged to participate in this annual tradition. Dan Devine was thanked for his efforts. Linda indicated that the first part of the water quality report had been received with the final report results appearing in the next issue of The View. Dick Pinagle of Aquaweed will again provide aquatic weed treatment service in 2012. Linda noted that two treatments will be used as a test to see which more effectively treats Starry Stonewart. Additional details will be included in the next issue of The View.

Continuation ofDRAFT Minutes from October 2011

General Membership MeetingA-Lots & Docks: Linda Gepper reported that there are 12 open slips which include 4 new ones as the dock renovations on Wavewood. She added that the docks on Ravinewood West are in need of maintenance due to shore erosion with an estimated cost of $5,000. Since this work is not included in the 2012 budget, Paul MacDonald suggested that there would be unspent funds in the Lakes category of the current budget which could be used for this work. There was concurrence that Paul’s proposal be adopted to avoid any unsafe conditions. It was determined that a motion was not needed since the current budget could absorb this expense. A resident requested that new docks on Raftwood be considered in the near future.

Boat Ramp: Harry Tucker reported that the boat ramp closes for the season on October 31st with access by special permission only. He also announced that Phyllis would be back next year as administrator of the ramp. Harry will continue to remind everyone of the 48-hour guest boat policy and that it will be enforced.

Beautification/Land Care: Sandy Weber thanked Jerry Ammons for his efforts concerning water fowl control on Lake Sherwood and his excellent work with the DNR/DEQ. Jerry has decided to retire from this role and Cathy Brush has kindly agreed to assume this responsibility. Petitions for mute swan control (non-native species) will be due in early November for a spring permit. Concerning the new entrance signs, Sandy indicated that the truck ruts and related issues would be taken care of and the lawn maintenance contract now includes care of these areas. No big beautification projects are proposed for 2012 although the annual survey of residents in the spring will ask for suggestions.

Social: Gloria Hughes asked everyone to please thank the local businesses who sponsor various LSA events through out the year. She reminded the group of upcoming events including the children’s Halloween party on October 30th, the Christmas party on December 10 and the holiday lighting contest on December 20.

New Business:• Concern was again expressed about the Commerce Township Fire Department’s ability to control home

fires until there is city water access especially given budget cuts. Dry hydrants were suggested as a solution. Laurie Tulk offered to investigate costs and share with the Board at the December meeting. Kathy suggested that a Special Assessment District (SAD) may be necessary.

• A question was raised concerning the signs on dead-end courts and Kathy responded that the Oakland County Road Commission has standards that must be followed.

• Concerns were expressed abandoned/foreclosed homes in need of lawn maintenance. Kathy indicated that the bylaws address situations when the grass is over 12 inches high.

• Concerns were also shared concerning deed restriction infractions (boat storage in front of homes, moveable structures, etc). The Rules and Regulations Committee has a policy concerning sending letters to residents in violation that include fines and liens. Brad Hynes announced that a new committee is being formed to meet with Township officials to discuss how to synch up ordinances/bylaws so we can have common rules. It was requested that the an item for the meeting with Tom Zoner include the poor handling of the Mechigian property following the fire three years ago.

A motion was made by Brad Hynes, and seconded by Linda Gepper, to adjourn the meeting at 9:21 pm. Motion carried.

Kathy again stated that it had been a great pleasure to serve as president and assured all that she would continue to volunteer. She thanked everyone for attending!

Respectfully submitted,Cheryl MillerRecording Secretary
