More on the Miniatures Show...

Juror Susanne K. Arnold’s Statement

Time magazine Critic Richard Stengel once wrote: Artists who work on a small scale have traditionally been known as Miniaturists. The term has a kind of pat-on-the-head condescension

about it, a sense that the miniaturist is forever relegated to the artistic minor leagues. But just as quantum physicists have revealed that the world inside the atom . . . is just as grand as the big, blooming universe outside, artists who construct a magnum opus out of the microscopic have become major-leaguers.

In judging the current Tidewater Artists Association’s Miniaturist Exhibition, I looked first for a certain level of formal and technical proficiency and then looked for work that grappled seriously with the idea of the miniature. I looked for microcosms – self-contained unities that epitomize larger unities, but do not need to be to be larger to communicate their message. To me, miniature means “on a much reduced scale according to a fixed ratio of parts to whole.” I perceive a distinct difference between a miniature and a work which is merely “small” or cropped (as in a small study of a work intended to be larger.) I was pleased to find among the entries so many pieces of diverse style, content and media that adhered to this concept of the miniature. I eliminated works that I felt were poorly crafted to the detriment of the image or concept. This included those which were totally overwhelmed by their frames or presentation or by the difficult process of making digital images of their work. I also eliminated subjects that were too clichéd or differed in style from other works by the same artist. I chose more than one work by an artist where the consistency of theme and/or medium was enhanced by doing so. Finally, in my selection of work for acknowledgement, I chose work to which I responded emotionally and visually: intimate, evocative pieces with lingering impact. While I feel that all the award-winning pieces have formal strength, expression and craftsmanship, Nancy Bruce’s work is the most compelling, conveying originality and a strong personal vision. I awarded her Best in Show for all three works. The scale of each is just right for its content; they would not be better larger. In fact, their scale seems to draw me into a magical world. In addition, the artist’s presentation is professional and appropriate. The quality and consistency of all three entries add strength and authority to her work. Quiet, subtle, but strong in texture, the very size, detail and scale of her painting “Riding on the Road” is critical to the success of this work. The Award of Excellence goes to Edward Vann. His work captures fully objects seen at a moment in time with a gestural painterliness hard to believe in work so small. The intense coloration and balance of light and dark of “Cherries”, are, I feel, perfectly in proportion to its pictorial image and scale. Lovely brush handling. The Award of Merit goes to Lee Gerry Wertheimer for "Final Journey to the Last Tree." More than any other work in the show, Untitled conveys the concept of “miniaturization”: here is a microcosm that conveys a macrocosm : world within worlds. The two Honorable Mention winners, Lesley Hildreth and Norman Goodwin, exhibit originality, sensitivity to scale and technique and distinctive personal style. I am particularly impressed with the sense of immediacy each artist’s work conveys. Lesley Hildreth’s “How to be an Evil Puppetmaster” conveys meaning though its diminutive size, not in spite of it. The artist’s handling of ceramics displays a mastery of skill in the service of meaning. The work is highly evocative and memorable. Norman Goodwin’s Another One, Two,Three has monumentality and authority that goes beyond their small size. Here again I find microcosms that convey macrocosms- work that is major league in concept. Special mention should also go to Howard Martinez’s photographs, Catherine Mein’s joyful mixed media work, and Jenny Windsor’s paintings. The exhibition as a whole is notable for its broad diversity of themes, styles and mediums. It conveys the idea that small is where it’s at . Each work included allows for a private dialogue between art and viewer. Indeed, the show communicates with directness and honesty the full gamut of human expression. It has been a great honor to act as juror for this exhibition. I congratulate the participating artists and thank all of you for allowing me to spend time with your work. Susanne K. Arnold, juror

You can help the Arts in Virginia—Here’s how!! Virginians now have the opportunity to contribute part of

their state income tax refund to the Virginia Arts Foundation by checking a box on their return form. It’s never been so simple to support the arts in Virginia.

Because the foundation may receive but not solicit private funds, money will have to come from the purchase of arts license plate and other special sources, such as this tax check off box.

The interest on all funds received will be distributed in grants by the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Please help support the arts in Virginia. Check off a contribution for the Virginia Arts Foundation on your state income return. It’s one of the most important checks you can write – and now, it’s one of the easiest.

Submitting items for Artline Please be sure to include “Artline” in the subject line of your message! (...unless you want your message to get lost in the tons of email your editor receives every day.) If your message doesnʼt say “Artline” it might get rejected as trash! Each photo needs its own caption, in its own email. Please send each photo, properly captioned, in a separate email. Use another email for each additional photo, along with its caption. That way your Editor wonʼt get photos mixed up with the wrong caption. Whatʼs a proper caption? Please write a full sentence, identifying the principal people or art pieces in the photo, with an explanation of whatʼs going on (which event, award, etc.) Feature Articles: If you have an idea for a feature article (say, to highlight your work or a favorite technique), make the suggestion to your editor ([email protected]) , who will be glad to work with you to produce your article. And include “Artline” in your subject line! Please!! Deadline: 15th of the preceding month.
