Remember that they make an excellent Christmas gift, the gift that keeps giving all year. Thanks for your support.

Dear Friends, The final week of Advent unfolds in its own quiet manner, moving us closer to the birth of Jesus Christ. The final opportunity here for the Sacrament of Confession will be this Monday, December 20th, 6:00-7:00pm. There will be one further opportunity at these area churches who are offering the sacrament Wednesday evening, 6:30-8:00pm: St. Aloysius, St. George, and Our Lady of Mercy. Like we did in Lent, the priests of our deanery will be at these churches on this final night to offer the sacrament to any in the deanery who seek it. The results of the recent Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation effort by our Elementary School and our diocesan schools was very positive. I sat in on a number of meetings with parents, teachers and representatives of SACS and heard many positive elements of our school’s curriculum, faculty and administration. This is truly a blessing for our parish and school. Under the direction of our Principal, Ms. Wendy Gilmore and her Staff, the plan for continuous improvement, which is part of SACS accreditation, will be implemented in the months ahead. Academic Excel-lence in a community of faith, which is the School’s Mission Statement, expresses very well the mission of our School in our parish and for our educational ministries. I recently met with Mrs. Lori Aucoin and Mr. Brod Baggert about our parish’s participation in “Together Baton Rouge.” Mr. Baggert is one of the leaders for TBR who is working with numerous churches in Baton Rouge on this project. At that same meeting were a number of interested parishioners who will help lead this effort in our parish. TBR intends to build trust and relationships across lines that usually divide us; identify and train community leaders so that problems can be solved from the inside out not outside in, and build a lasting organization. Our Parish is involved with TBR because our faith looks to Scriptures for issues of social responsibility and human dignity; and, because our parish has a long standing commitment to be faithful citizens in caring for Baton Rouge. We will be holding “house meetings” in the near future, inviting parishioners to tell their stories about what is important to them as regards our ability to live in Baton Rouge. Recently the Learning and Growth Center applied for licensing from the State. This will bring our Pre-School benefits in being a licensed Pre-School

as well as compliance with licensing procedures. Looking far ahead, we will welcome Sr. Lucy Silvio csj, January 15th, who will offer a day of prayer, centered around “Praying From Our Experience-Noticing and Responding to God in Daily Life.” 9:30am-2:00pm. Christmas is just a few days away. Plan on coming to the Christmas masses at St. Jean Vianney. Bring your children and your families to celebrate the gift of God’s Son and the message he brings. I hope this week is not too filled with busy-ness as to miss the pleasure of these remaining Advent days. Pray for one another and the parish. Love,

A REFLECTION ON THIS WEEK’S SCRIPTURES

TRUST IN GOD On this final Sunday of Advent our scriptures focus on the historical birth of Jesus, who is son of David and Son of God, child and king, Jesus and Emmanuel. Isaiah the prophet begs Ahaz to ask for a sign, to allow God to offer him reassurance of the survival of the Davidic dynasty. The king hypocritically refuses to “tempt the LORD” in that way (Isaiah 7:12), but the prophet foretells the birth of a son, an heir to the throne, who will prove the Lord’s enduring protection of God’s chosen lineage on the throne of David. The child will be called Emmanuel. Matthew’s reference to this history in his description of the birth of Jesus highlights the contrast between the faithless refusal of trust shown by Ahaz, and the complete trust in God shown by Mary and Joseph in bringing about the birth of Jesus Christ. © Copyright, J.
