furnishings and unique gifts. Discover these items and take the time to visit with shop-keepers to learn more about their lifestyle. Most Amish-owned businesses are closed on Sundays.

Arthur doesn’t have any chain restau-rants. Instead, locally-owned eateries serve lovingly prepared comfort food. For a treat, stop by Dicks Pharmacy for a “world fa-mous soda.”

Arthur hosts several annual festivals and ongoing events, such as the Third Saturday Downtown Arthur Market, when 10 to 20 crafters – from antique collectors to bakers – gather to display and sell their wares.

On Saturday, June 6-7, come out for the Arthur Days Strawberry Jam Festival, which features live music, strawberry treats of ev-ery kind, crafts, inflatables for kids, games and more. In addition, discover bargains at the merchants’ sidewalk sales.

Arthur plays host to about 30,000 on Saturday, June 28, for Arthur’s Freedom Celebration and Fireworks. The annual event features craft shows, parades, food, he-licopter rides, a mechanical bull and more. In the evening, skies over Arthur will light up with the largest fireworks display in Central Illinois.

Other events are scheduled throughout the summer, such as the Annual Moul-trie-Douglas County Fair, July 7-13, one of the oldest, continuous county fairs in Il-linois. For a complete schedule of activities, visit www.illinoisamishcountry.com.

ArcolaArcola is also home of unique shops,

including Amish-crafted furniture and an-tique stores.

To learn about the local Amish commu-nity, visit the Amish Interpretive Center at

Rockome Gardens. Visitors can schedule tours of Amish homes, barns and schedule a traditional meal in an Amish home. In ad-dition to the museum, stroll through Rock-ome’s extensive gardens, visit the shops or enjoy a family-style meal at the restaurant. Rockome opens for the season on May 2.

On May 17, 11 a.m., Rockome will host the 2nd Annual Chet Kingery Memorial Bluegrass Festival featuring Balsam Range, James King Band, Jeff Brown and Still Lon-some, Mackville and Firebox Blue Grass Band.

Every year, Raggedy Ann and Andy enthusiasts visit the small town that was the boyhood home of the creator of the Rag-gedy Ann phenomenon, Johnny Gruelle. This year’s annual Raggedy Ann Ralley at

Rockome will be June 6-8.Other events include the annual Pop the

Top Festival on June 28 featuring a car show in Downtown Arcola, adjacent to “The One and Only Moomaw America Hippie Me-morial.” Plus, check out the15 beautiful new murals painted by the famous Walldogs, cel-ebrating Arcola history.

Arcola has the distinction as being “Broom Corn Capital of the World.” The Broom Corn Festival on Sept. 5-7 will cele-brate that honor with broom activities, arts and crafts, free entertainment, food, a pa-rade, 5K or 10K races and more.

Amish Country: Where Buggies & Cars Share The RoadDiscover the unique culture of Arthur, Arcola

Three Amish young women bike in Arthur.photo by Diana Linsley

The Illinois towns of Arthur, Arcola, Tus-cola and Sullivan are home to about 4,500 conservative, rural Amish who strive to “be not conformed to this world.”

The first Amish families to settle in Cen-tral Illinois in 1865 were three Pennsylvania Mennonite families. Today, an area approxi-mately 12 miles east and west, and five miles north and 10 miles south make up Amish Country with Arthur at the Heart of the set-tlement.

The Amish’s presence, combined with their more progressive “English” neigh-bors, creates an intriguing cultural blend of the old and the new. The two cultures are respectful of one another’s differences and together have created a haven for tourism.

ArthurArthur, whose motto is “you’re a stranger

only once,” is in the heart of Amish Country, 10 miles west of I-57 at exit 203.

The Amish farm the land and operate numerous country shops. The horse-drawn, black Amish buggies are a common sight around Amish country.

The vibrant central shopping district in the downtown district is chock-full of Amish-owned or operated shops selling handcrafted clothes, custom cabinetry, home

At Fort Massac, take a his-torical journey at the replica

of the 1802 American fort that was on site. The his-

Spring is in the air in Missouri’s wine country and it is a beautiful time to discov-er this part of the state with its rolling hills, beautiful countryside, quaint German towns, plus award-winning wines. Missouri has long been noted for its wines – as far back as the Civil War.

Towns such as Augusta, Defiance, Dutzow and Washington are among the small-town gems of Missouri Wine Country, a scenic 50-mile swath straddling the Missouri River.

Wineries along the picturesque Missouri Weinstrasse (scenic Highway 94 wine road) remain top producers, garnering critical ac-claim. But they also attract tourists, who en-joy sampling locally-manufactured vintages, touring wineries, strolling through historic districts and browsing the shops.

Augusta

The small town of Augusta boasts the first recognized wine district in the United States. Just 30 minutes west of St. Louis, Augusta and the surrounding area is also home to pic-turesque farms, lush vineyards, breathtaking scenery, as well as antique shops, small bou-

tiques, restaurants, unique historical sites and bed and breakfast inns.

Both Montelle Winery and Noboleis Vine-yards, two of the wineries in Augusta, invite the public to stop, sample wine and relax and listen to music on weekends. For Mother’s Day, Montelle is hosting a special brunch.

On Saturday, April 26, Augusta plays host to Uncorked 100K, St. Charles County’s First Trail Relay with four runners and one car. The run begins and ends in Augusta. Run start is 7 a.m.

Augusta Plein Air Art Festival continues through May 4 throughout wine country. The final sale is May 4, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Estates. For details, visit www.augus-tapleinair.com.

DefianceSugar Creek Vineyards and Winery call

the small town of Defiance home. The win-ery features live music on Saturday and Sun-day afternoons through October and Con-certs on the Hills the fourth Saturday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m.

Defiance was once home to Daniel Boone, who spent his final years in a stately, four-story limestone house overlooking Femme Osage Creek. Boonesfield Village, which is open to the public, features that house and over a dozen relocated and restored 19th-century buildings. For details, call 636-798-2005 or visit www.lindenwood.edu/boone.

DutzowMusic fills the air at Blumenhof Winery

on South Highway 94 on Saturdays and Sun-days. With its architecture and ambiance, the winery’s German heritage is evident. It is lo-cated in the historic village of Dutzow, Mis-souri’s oldest German settlement, founded in 1832.

WashingtonWashington, billed as “Heart of Wine

Country” is less than an hour’s drive from St. Louis on Highway 100 from I-44. Visit the historic river town for shopping, dining or sightseeing.

12 Day Trips

Delve into Missouri’s rich French and German heritage, experience unique special events and shop specialty stores by driving down Interstate 55 to Kimmswick, St. Gene-vieve and Perry County.

KimmswickThe historic village of Kimmswick is a

short drive down I-55, just 25 miles south of St. Louis. Founded in 1859 along the mighty Mississippi River, this small town features over 25 quaint craft and specialty stores such as Mississippi Mud Gallery & Gifts. The visit wouldn’t be complete with-out savoring the specialties of the popular Blue Owl Restaurant, including its large selection of mouth-watering pies.

An annual favorite is the Strawberry Fes-tival with activities for children and adults alike. This year it will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8, with strawberries galore, plus music, arts & crafts, horse-drawn carriage rides, pony rides, petting zoo and more.

Kimmswick will go pink June 12-15 at Shop for the Cure. A portion of all purchases from participating shops and restaurants will be donated to breast can-cer research.

On June 15, the town will host its annual Father’s Day Car Show, which is open to all makes and models of cars, trucks and mo-torcycles.

BarnhartDown I-55, 25 minutes from downtown

St. Louis, savor wine in the outdoor setting of Persimmon Ridge Vineyards, just off Highway 21 near Barnhart. The winery fea-tures live music on Saturdays and Sunday, 2 to 5 p.m. and is open year round.

Ste. GenevieveIn Ste. Genevieve step back into the

world of America’s oldest French Colonial village. Established on the west bank of the Mississippi River, the village of Ste. Gene-vieve was settled in the late 1740s about two miles south of its present location.

Much of the town’s charm and ambiance is due to the remarkable preservation of the original Colonial settlement. Its narrow streets and fenced gardens surround some of the most significant 18th-century archi-tecture in the nation. Visitors are invited to discover this small town by touring interna-

tionally-recognized historic homes, shopping unique specialty stores and browsing art gal-leries, tasting wines and savoring the local cuisine.

A number of Ste. Genevieve’s histor-ic homes are open for tours including the Bolduc House Museum. The 1785 Louis Bolduc Historic House is regarded as “the first most authentically restored Creole house in the Nation.”

To celebrate its history, the small town hosts numerous events throughout the year.

On the weekend after Mother’s Day, tour private and public gardens at the Ste. Gen-evieve Master Gardeners annual Garden Walk, which also features a plant sale on Sat-urday, art exhibits and the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market.

During the second weekend in June, French Fest features living history, live tra-ditional music, folk dancing, French cuisine, wine tasting, re-enactors in period dress, gumbo cook-off with French delights, street dance, parades, open houses, walking tours and more.

On July 4, come for Freedom Celebration with music, dancing, food and fireworks.

The annual Jour de Fête, southeast Mis-souri’s largest crafts fair, is held in the heart of Ste. Genevieve’s Historic District on the second full weekend in August. Visitors can browse arts and crafts booths, enjoy music,

Experience State’s Rich History Off I-55

foods and other activities.

Perry CountyHead further down I-55 to one of the

oldest communities in Missouri. Perry County was settled by Lutheran immigrants in the early 1800s. Located just west of the Mississippi River about 80 miles from St. Louis, the area includes Perryville, Frohna, Altenburg, Brazeau and Farrar.

In Frohna, the Saxon Lutheran Memo-rial, an outdoor history museum set in a log cabin village, highlights the pioneering spirit of the early immigrants from Germany who settled Perry County.

The historic working farm and home was the home of Wilhelm and Christian Bergt, two brothers who participated in the 1839 immigration from Saxony, Germany. Today the site is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and consists of 15 buildings, seven of which are historic log cabins dating from 1820 to 1840.

Perryville, the “Heartland’s best-kept secret,” has a small-town feel while offer-ing amenities of larger communities. Shop specialty stores, visit wineries, then head to Willow House Bed and Breakfast, Per-ryville’s first bed and breakfast. Built in1901, the Victorian home has been historically re-stored and provides many of today’s accom-modations.

JacksonSee the countryside during a two-hour

scenic train ride on the St. Louis Iron Moun-tain & Southern Railway. All trains depart and return to Jackson, located 100 miles from St. Louis down I-55 to Exit 99. The two, 1925 coach cars or the 1950s stream-liner, pulled by a Pennsylvania Diesel #5898 built in 1950, run April through December.

The 1785 Louis Bolduc Historic House in Ste. Genevieve is considered “the first most authentically restored Creole house in the Nation.”

Families can escape and unwind amid the natural wonders of Arcadia Valley, Elling-ton, Steelville and Cuba – all areas which surround many of the state’s rivers and streams against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery.

Arcadia Valley Arcadia Valley is located just 80 miles

south of St. Louis and less than a half-hour drive from U.S. 67. Situated in the Ozarks of Southeast Missouri, towns include Lester-ville, Farmington, Black, Ironton, Arcadia and Pilot Knob.

Take in unique sightseeing opportunities at Johnson Shut-ins State Park in Middle-brook, which beckons outdoor enthusiasts to splash in nature’s water park, or at Elephant

Rocks State Park with its giant granite rocks standing end-to-end like a train of circus ele-phants. Trails at Taum Sauk Mountain State Park take hikers to the highest point in the state to the tallest waterfall. For details on state parks, visit www.mostateparks.com.

The Black River is also a popular destina-tion to floaters. Outfitters can provide all the equipment needed to experience the river. Camping and other lodging accommoda-tions can also be found along the river.

The towns of Pilot Knob, Ironton and Arcadia are rich in Missouri Civil War his-tory. Fort Davidson State Historic Site serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives on the battlefield. A self-guided driving tour

EllingtonFloat, boat, fish, swim, hunt, camp, hike

and ride the many natural wonders sur-rounding Ellington. Nestled in the Ozark

Highlands of Reynolds County, the small town is located at Missouri Scenic Highway 21 and Scenic Highway 106 approximately 125 miles south, southwest of St Louis.

The Current River, the first river to be designated as a National Scenic River, is lo-cated just west of Ellington. It is known for its crystal clear water, large gravel bars and hundreds of springs.

Southeast of Ellington sits Clearwater Lake for boating, swimming, water skiing, camping, picnicking, sightseeing, hunting or fishing. Webb Creek Recreation Area of-fers a secluded camping area with pavilions, modern restrooms, a playground, beach, showers, plus a full-service marina with boat rental available.

Three rivers – the East Fork, Middle Fork and West Fork – come together to form the Black River as they enter Clearwater Lake to the north.

The Current River Conservation Area encompasses approximately 28,000 acres and includes the Blue Springs Natural Area. Blue Spring is the sixth largest, and the deep-est, spring in Missouri.

While visiting Ellington, also check out Rocky Falls, Klepzig Mill, the Shut-Ins and Reed Spring.

Learn about the area’s rich history at the Reynolds County Museum located at 233 S. Second Street in Ellington. The museum is open March through November, Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information, call 573-663-3233.

On May 9 and 10 visitors can savor bar-becue at the 31st Annual Spring Fever Days Festival. As part of the event, the St. Louis BBQ Society is holding a Spring Smokin’ BBQ Competition. At 1:30 p.m. on Satur-day, a barbecue-tasting event will be open to the public. Visitors can sample barbecue and then vote for their favorite.

Spring Fever Days also features bluegrass

music, car/boat/motorcycle show, 5K run, parade, rides, games, crafts and more.

Enjoy a movie under the stars at the ren-ovated 21 Drive In. Built in 1949, it is one of only 13 operating drive-ins in Missouri, located approximately 15 miles south of El-lington. Call 573-945-2121 for information.

SteelvilleSteelville and Cuba, west of St. Louis off

Interstate 44, are also popular outdoor recre-ation areas. Meramec River cuts a path be-tween Cuba and Steelville. Steelville is situat-ed on three rivers: the Meramec, the Huzzah and the Courtois. Canoeing and kayaking are big draws in warm-weather months.

With the Meramec Music Theatre, Steel-ville is also the place for music lovers. The venue brings many well-known musical acts to the area. A sampling of the summer line-up includes Mel Tillis on June 29, Ronnie Milsap on July 19, Diamond Rio on Aug. 2.

Numerous lodging options are available. In Steelville, Kick’n K Farmhouse &

Arena, overlooking the Meramec River, of-fers two vacation rental homes – an 1899 farmhouse which sleeps up to 10 and the new Sunrise Cabin.

Bass River Resort features canoeing, kayaking or rafting trips on the Courtois, Huzzah and Meramec rivers, plus riverside camping, RV sites, and cabins for groups from two to 20 people. Huzzah Valley Re-sort also outfits trips on the three rivers and offers camping, lodging in log cabins and many other activities. Cobblestone Lodge is home of the all-inclusive family vacation with meals, activities, floats and more.

CubaCuba, “The Rte 66 Mural City,” is lo-

cated 80 miles southwest of St. Louis on Interstate 44. The small town boasts 12 col-orful, outdoor murals, a history museum, a veterans memorial and the Guinness world record’s largest rocking chair.

Come to the Crawford County Fair in Cuba, July 8-12, where everything is “handmade, homegrown and farm fresh.”

Spend an evening watching a favorite during fun movie nights at the Highway 19 Drive-In. Listen to the movies in FM stereo or nostalgic drive-in speakers.

For hungry visitors, the Country Kitch-en welcomes both large and small groups and features a buffet on weekends.

It is known for its crappie, bass and catfish fishing in the spring and fun for the entire family all summer long. Camping is available at Webb Creek Recreation Park; plus a full service marina with boat/wave runner rentals on site. Webb Creek Park features over 40 campsites, swim beach, playground, showers, picnic pavilions, boat launch, and more. K Bridge Recreation Area and Campground offers playground, showers, electric and comfort station. Floats (raft or canoe) can be arranged

on site by calling Jeff ’s Canoe Rental at 573-598-4555. Cabin rental and a small general store is also available.

Current River – Hwy 106 – Fish, swim, camp and relax on crystal clear Current River. Rough camping is available at Powder Mill (formerly Owl’s Bend) and features 10 family sites each with a picnic table, fire pit, lantern hook and bathrooms nearby. These are on a first come basis. Most campsites at Powder Mill are located on the water so bring your tubes and rafts and expect to get wet. This campground is conveniently located near the Ozark Trail which passes by on the far side of the river. For the short hike enthusiast a marked 1.5 mile hiking trail leads to the beautiful Blue Spring. Family sites are $10.00 per night; electric not available.

Blue Spring, Current River – Hwy 106 – This spring is the 6th largest spring in Missouri and known for its deep blue color. Those seeking escape from the swift creeks and busy rivers of south-central Missouri can find refuge at Blue Spring, a site of serene Ozark beauty disturbed only by the sound of native birds. The quiet forest hike through huge oak and sycamore trees prepares visitors for the coming scene as they approach the sky-blue waters of Missouri’s deepest spring. The stunning beauty of the spring – named “Spring of the Summer Sky” by early Native Americans – and the peaceful natural setting are treasures to long

be remembered by those who stop to see the spring. A walk of about a quarter mile along a forest path is required to get to the spring location. The parking area has picnic tables and bathrooms. A trail of 1.5 miles connects the Blue Spring parking lot with the Powder Mill campground.

Rocky Falls – NN Hwy – Cascading Rocky Creek drops 40 feet through shut-ins of scenic igneous rock into a lazy pool just right for swimming. Long before it became a popular tourist attraction, Rocky Falls was one of the most popular family outings in South Central Missouri. Since the mid 1800s, families that lived along the Current River in western Reynolds County and eastern Shannon County would gather to experience the beautiful falls. The rocks are not too steep to climb nor the water too swift to enjoy – and the beauty of the area is breath-taking. The falls are on national park property and the site offers picnic tables with fire grills and bathrooms. There is also a hiking trail along Rocky Creek for the more adventurous. The Ozark Trail also goes through the park area for serious hikers. A must see if you are in the area and fun for all ages. Wear non-slip shoes and use caution when climbing on the falls. Camera is a must!

Current River Conservation Area – Formerly known as Deer Run State park consists of 28,000 acres of state land. Deer, turkey, eagles, elk and a multitude of wildlife can be seen. UTV’s, ATV’s, horse and vehicle traffic are welcome on miles of gravel roads that wind through some 60+ food plots. Buford pond, Missouri’s first fire tower, a 1926 log cabin and an earthen Fort Barnesville can all be found here. Buford Pond provides fishing and picnicking and is a favorite location of all. For hunting enthusiasts an unstaffed rifle and archery range are provided. Current River Conservation Area is home to the Missouri Ozark Ecosystem Project, the world’s most comprehensive forest management study. This 100 year project spans over 9,000 acres. Main park entrance located on South Road in Ellington, other entrances located off Hwy 106 and H highway. Maps are available at the main park entrance.

Local Flavor – You won’t want to miss the Reynolds County Museum while visiting Ellington. This museum is filled with relicts from days gone by and the rich history of the Ozarks. Volunteers staff the establishment and are happy to answer questions; open Mar-Nov, T-F 10-4 and 2nd Saturday of the month 10-4. Call 573-663-3233 for more information. To add a little nostalgia to your visit grab a blanket or your lawn chairs and enjoy a movie the way your parents or grandparents once did… under the stars! Built in

1949 and recently renovated, 21 Drive In is one of only 13 operating drive-ins in Missouri. Movies start at dusk May-September, but we recommend that you arrive early so the little ones can enjoy the playground. 21 Drive In is located south of Ellington on Highway 21. Call 573 945-2121 for show information. Need a spot for the kids to play, then visit Brawley Park located on South Road. This park features a playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball field, picnic pavilions, paved walking track and short hiking trail.

Ozark Trail – Blair Creek & Current River section; Hwy 106 – Whether you are looking for a one day hike or want to make a few days of it; hiking these sections of the Ozark Trail is rewarding and adventurous. Such splendid locations as Blair Creek, Bloom Creek, Current River, Rocky Falls, Klepzig Mill and Buzzard Mountain Shut-Ins are located right on the trail. For the adventurous visitor this is a must!

Blair Creek – Hwy 106 – This area is a favorite of the locals spring! For the person who is looking for the unknown, adventure into the wild Ozark hills for the beautiful views, caves, swimming, picnicking. Here riding the back roads in ATV’s, UTV’s and 4-wheel drives is exciting and fun. Many horse enthusiasts adore this area

as well. Make sure and bring your camera you will want to capture this area in print. Entrance located North of Hwy 106 on County Road 106-B (across from Blue Spring entrance).

Scenic Highway 106 – This 26 mile drive between Ellington and Eminence is known state wide for its scenic views and beauty, and is especially a favorite in the fall. This section of highway is also home to the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail and sees many bicycle travelers from April-October. Bicycle enthusiasts say it’s one of the “toughest sections on the trail” and known for the steep hills & hollers.

Peck Ranch – H Highway, Shannon County – Listen for the bugle this fall! Elk are now roaming the hills of the Ozarks and can be seen in Peck Ranch, Current River Conservation Area and the surrounding region. Thanks to the Missouri Department of Conservation’s recent Elk Restoration Program elk were released into the elk zone beginning in the summer of 2011. With the third release the summer of 2013 the elk herd is nearing 120 bulls, cows and calves. Peck Ranch is open from sunrise/sunset daily and offers a driving tour. Bugling occurs in the fall, Sept-Nov. Check the Missouri Dept of Conservation website for park closing details. Maps are available at park entrance.
