Diverse excursions await those who cross the Mississippi River into Illinois – from Su-perman in Metropolis to the Amish in Ar-thur.
Arthur Central Illinois is home to about 4,500
conservative, rural Amish who strive to “be not conformed to this world.”
The first Amish families to settle in Cen-tral Illinois in 1865 were three Pennsylvania Mennonite families. Today, an area approxi-mately 12 miles east and west, and five miles north and 10 miles south make up Amish Country with Arthur at the Heart of the settlement. Arthur, whose motto is “you’re a stranger only once,” is located 10 miles west of Interstate 57 at exit 203.
The Amish’s presence, combined with their more progressive “English” neighbors, blend the old and the new and together have created a haven for tourism.
The Amish farm the rich land of the Ar-thur area with teams of six to eight horses, and operate numerous “country shops.” The horse-drawn, black Amish buggies are a common sight around Amish country.
The central shopping district is full of Amish-owned or operated shops selling handcrafted clothes, custom cabinetry, home furnishings and unique gifts. Most Amish-
owned businesses are closed on Sundays.Arthur doesn’t have any chain restau-
rants. Instead, locally-owned eateries serve lovingly prepared comfort food. For a treat, stop by Dick’s Pharmacy for a “world fa-mous soda.”
Arthur hosts several annual festivals and ongoing events throughout the year.
On Saturday, June 6-7, come out for the Arthur Days Strawberry Jam Festival, which features live music, strawberry treats of ev-ery kind, crafts, inflatables for kids, games and more.
On Saturday, June 28, Arthur hosts
Freedom Celebration and Fireworks with craft shows, parades, food, helicopter rides and more, plus the largest fireworks display in Central Illinois.
Other events include the Moultrie-Doug-las County Fair, July 7-13, one of the oldest, county fairs in Illinois. For a schedule of ac-tivities, visit www.illinoisamishcountry.com.

Delight In Superman, Amish Country In Illinois
With warm weather fast approaching, plan a weekend canoe trip to nearby rivers off Interstate 44. The Meramec River cuts a path between Cuba and Steelville. Steelville is situated on three rivers: the Meramec, the Huzzah and the Courtois.
Numerous lodging options are avail-able including Huzzah Valley Resort in Steelville, which outfits trips on the three rivers and offers camping, lodging in log cabins and many other activities.
Head down I-55 to one of the oldest communities in Missouri. Perry County was settled by Lutheran immigrants in the early 1800s. Located just west of the Mississippi River about 80 miles from St. Louis, the area includes Perryville, Frohna, Altenburg, Brazeau and Farrar.
In Frohna, the Saxon Lutheran Memo-rial, an outdoor history museum set in a log cabin village, highlights the pioneering spirit of the early immigrants from Germany who settled Perry County.
The historic working farm and home was the home of Wilhelm and Christian Bergt, two brothers who participated in the 1839 immigration from Saxony, Germany. Today the site is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and consists of 15 buildings, seven of which are historic log cabins dating from 1820 to 1840.

MetropolisMetropolis, Ill., located at Exit 37 off
Interstate 24 at the southernmost tip of Il-linois, is the official home of Superman and proudly honors its favorite son with a 15-foot bronze statue at Superman Square. And two blocks down the street stands a statue of ac-tress Noel Neil, posed as Lois Lane.
This year, the town will again pay tribute to its leading man at the 36th annual Su-perman Celebration June 12-15. Featured guests are: Dean Cain who played Super-man/Clark Kent in the 1993 television hit series, “Lois & Clark,” Billy Dee Williams, Valerie Perrine and Aaron Smolinski.
Visitors will enjoy musical entertainment, a $1,000 Superhero Costume contest, kids activities, vendors, a carnival, plus artists and writers from the comic world.
Metropolis is also home to the first state park in Illinois – Fort Massac State Park. Hike, camp, picnic, or boat and fish on the Ohio River. At Fort Massac, take a historical journey at the replica of the 1802 American fort that was on site.
