Fair Books, are available at the Extension Office and at extension.iastate.edu/marion/4h.
READ THE FAIRBOOK!
There is important information/rules/guidelines in your fairbook that you will need to know for fair. There is no excuse for not knowing a rule, the fairbooks have been
out for a couple of months!
4-H T-Shirts Most livestock shows recommend you wear a 4-H T-
shirt while showing and it is encouraged to wear one during Dyer-Hudson judging. 4-H t-shirts are
available for purchase from the Extension Office for $8.00.
Horse and Dairy exhibitors have specific dress codes. Read your fairbook for specific rules.

Bucket of Junk Contest! This is the 5th year for the Marion County 4-H Bucket of Junk Contest. We had 8 five gallon buckets of
‘Junk’ donated by Vermeer in Pella and Weiler in Knoxville. Each bucket was filled with a variety of scrap metal
from the two businesses. The first 8 4-Hers into the Extension Office were able to choose a number that went
along with which bucket they received. After receiving the bucket of junk the 4-Her and an adult worked together
to create a sculpture or lawn art piece.
The rules of the contest were as follows:
Teams must use approximately 75% of the materials in the bucket.
Teams may clean, sand, weld, glue, cut, bolt, fasten, bend, shape, paint, or finish the items that you are provid-
ed.
Teams WERE NOT allowed to add any extra pieces that weren’t in the bucket.
The finished pieces will be judged at Dyer-Hudson on artistic merit, technical merit, and the write up on the
creation on July 13th. After being judged they will be on display in the Dyer Hudson Building until July 19th.
Be sure to come to the Marion County Fair and support the 4-H program and the bucket of junk creations. If
you want to have one the 8 pieces of art in your house, front yard, or business, be sure to come to the Marion
County Fair Show Pavilion on July 19th at 6pm to bid on the sculptures! They will be auctioned off during the 4-H
Foundation Recognition Events, which includes senior 4-H/FFA members, Parade of Champions, and the 4-H
Bucket of Junk Auction.

Dear Volunteers and Parents:
The County Fair is quickly approaching! It is such an exciting time to be able to see all the hard work that
our young people have invested in their project areas and exhibits. As we go through the pre-fair time
and the fair time, please keep in mind that this is only a small (but very memorable) piece of the whole 4-
H experience.
The competition of the county fair can be a positive experience if we keep it in perspective and help
youth learn from their experiences. Here are some helpful tips from the Iowa 4-H Youth Development
Program (4H-203-A) for helping youth keep perspective during this time.
Allow youth to select the project area in which they will compete. This helps give them a sense of
control.
Encourage youth to participate in a variety of competitive events (livestock judging, showmanship)
and cooperative activities (helping in the 4-H food stand, helping decorate the club booth).
Be positive.
Make expectations realistic. Peer competition allows the opportunity for adults to teach youth about
limits and strengths; setting goals; and the personal and social benefits of projects done alone or with
friends.
Be a positive role model
Always place the youth first and winning second.
Most importantly, support youth in their competitive efforts, but don’t compete with them or through
them for your own satisfaction. When youth achieve, their pride should come from accomplishing their
goals, not yours.
From your own experiences with competition, you understand that a single outcome from a single event
does not determine how successful or unsuccessful you will be throughout life. Your mature attitude to-
ward competition will help youth learn how to deal with the pressure that comes with the competition
experience. If you are with the youth following a judging experience, help them process the experience
by asking, “What did you learn? What did you enjoy about the experience?”
As 4-H volunteers and parents, you play a significant role in shaping how your young person views com-
petition and what they learn from the 4-H experience at the county fair and throughout the year. We
applaud what you do for these young people and encourage you to help them always think about how
to “make the best better”!
Bucket of Flowers Help support the County Council in a fun, creative way. Make a bucket of flowers! Just use a 5-gallon bucket with
flowers that have been grown by you and a card listing the variety of flowers and light requirements. It’s an easy ex-
hibit to bring to Dyer Hudson! After judging on the 13th, the buckets will be placed around the fair for beautification.
A few things to think about while making and decorating your bucket are to put empty milk cartons or pop bottles as
fillers at the bottom to prevent heaviness. Also remember the 2017 Fair theme: “Fairidise” for decorating ideas! The
buckets will be auctioned off in a silent auction that will be held throughout the week.
Livestock Judging Contest
Come test your skills at judging livestock at the Marion County Fair!
The contest will be held Monday July 17th at 4pm in the Show Pavilion.
Swine, Sheep, goats, and Cattle will be the species judged.
Get a team of 4-H members, FFA members, or adults together or complete as and individual!
Awards will be announced following contest. Trophies for the top individuals and teams.
Dyer-Hudson Club Booths Club members may come and decorate booths on Wed., July 12
th between 6:00-8:00p.m., or wait until
judging day. The booths must be completed by 4:00p.m. on Thursday, July 13th. Please let the Extension
Office know if you plan to decorate on Wednesday evening. 4-H members must decorate the booth, adults can assist but not complete it!
The theme is: Party Till The Cows Come Home
Judging Criteria: 10% - Club Name is clearly visible. 15% - Theme has been carried out. 25% - Booth is clean, free from unnecessary items and exhibits have been attractively arranged to be
easily visible to the public. 50% - Creativity
