About the DanceThisunitrevisitsthelanguageofdanceexploredintheFoundationStageandKeyStage1.Thedifferentsectionshavebeencreatedtoenablepupilstoimproveandbuildupontheirdancevocabularyandtheintroductionofdifferentstimuliinitiatesavarietyofresponses.Thematerialinthisunitwillalsobegintodeveloppupils’choreographicandanalyticalskills.

StimuliThestimuluscomesfromthelanguageofdance,focusinguponinterpretationofthebasicgivenactions:-TRAVEL,TURN,JUMP,STILLNESS,GESTURE.

GIRAFFES CAN’T DANCE

About the DanceThis isadancethat focusesonthemaincharacterof thegiraffe“Gerald”andcreatesthenarrativethroughmovement.Otheranimalcharactersarecreatedatthejungledanceandthecontrastisemphasisedbetweenthesolitary,angulargiraffeandthesociable,rhythmicjungleanimals.

Childrencreatesimplemotifsandextendthemandworkontheirownandwithapartner.

StimulusThe stimulus for this dance is taken froma “BigBook” - “GiraffesCan’tDance”byGilesAndreaeandGuyParker-Rees.PublishedbyORCHARDBOOKS,96Leonard Street, London EC2A 4XD. ISBN 1-84121-508-2. This is a beautifullywrittenandillustratedbookwhichcouldbereadtotheclassasawholepriortocreatingthedance.Asynopsisofthestoryisasfollows:

“Geraldwasa tall, thin,bandy-leggedgiraffe.Hewasverygoodatstretchingupwards,forwardsandsidewaystoreachtheleavesonthetrees,butwhenhetriedtomovefasthewasawkwardandbuckledattheknees.

HedreadedtheannualJungleDancebecauseall theotheranimalscoulddancebeautifullybuthecouldnot.Hewatchedthemallmovingrhythmicallytogetherandhecouldn’tcompetesohewalkedawaysadly.

Then he looked at themoon and listened to the swaying grass, and suddenlyrealisedhecoulddance–hejustneededtherightmusic.Heswayedandcircled,jumpedandturned,andalltheanimalsapplaudedhim.“Youarethebestdancerwehaveeverseen”.

GIRAFFES CAN’T DANCEStarting Activity

(i) Moveinandoutofeachotherwithneat,quicksteps.Onasignal..STOP inastrong,stillshape.(Repeat and emphasise the contrast between the quick, light steps and the strong shapes.)

(ii) Repeatthetaskbutthistime,onasignal,curlupsmall.(Feel the strength in the small tight shapes.)

(iii) Repeattask(ii).Runandonasignalcurlupsmall,thenSLOWLYgrow intoatall,thinshapereachingfortheceiling.(Repeat and emphasise the strength of the sustained movement.)

Exploration and Development

(i) Startinasmallcurledupshape.Slowlystretchupwards,thenpullbackinto thecurledshape.Explore,andstretchintodifferentpositionsintheair. (Encourage children to stretch upwards, forwards, to either side, and WITH CARE backwards.)

(ii) Choosefourdifferentstretchedpositions.Worktotherhythmofstretch (1-2)andcurl(3-4).Createyourownpatternoffourstretch/curlactions –rememberandrepeatthem.(Accompany children with voice or tambour to help establish the rhythm.)

(iii) Usethesamestretchingmovementsbutextendthembytravellingoffthe spottostretchi.e.moveandstretch(x4).Practiseyourmotifandrepeatit. (Remind children they can use different ways of stepping and turning to move into the stretches – make sure you travel a little way into the stretch.)

(iv) Practisethestretchingmotifbothonthespotandonthemove. (The smooth stretches symbolise the elegant movements of the giraffe reaching into the trees for leaves to eat – emphasise the long body and neck at full stretch. Practise several times – 4 phrases on the spot and 4 phrases travelling into stretches)

(v) Movequicklywithsmallstepsinanunbalancedway.(Encourage children to relax the tension in their bodies and move unsteadily from side to side. As they do this, their feet will move with tiny steps on a wriggling pathway.) Practiseyourwrigglingpathwaysandunsteady, floppybodies.

Exploration and Development

(i) Extendonearmaboveyourheadandgraspthehandofyourpartner’s extendedarm.Improviseandexplorewaysoftwisting,bending,risingand fallingwithoutlosingyourgrip.(Encourage children to think about Theseus and the Minotaur wrestling and emphasise twisting, timing and SAFETY - talk to each other. Practise slowly and carefully.)

(ii) Varyyourgripandsometimesbrieflyreleaseyourgriptoincludesome rollingandjumpingactions. (Discuss with the children how variations in speed make the movements more interesting and communicate the idea of wrestling and fighting more clearly, e.g. slow-motion writhing movements combined with explosive jumps or fast rolls.)
