IntroductionBiosoft is an engineering company operating in the global village and supplying some of the leading companies with tailor made and Turn-

Key solutions. With it’s 20 years of experience Biosoft has gained extensive knowledge

and practical know how to design full fit solutions to the pharmaceutical, biotechnological chemical Food and beverage

industries and facilities including planning and building from scratch

Process Description• A dairy plant is using treated water to prepare a caustic solution that is used for

CIP of vessels and equipment.• Water consumption is 30,000 liters per hour in average.• The water has to be treated to remove hardness to avoid scaling and still has to

be non corrosive as they may damage certain parts in the production equipment.• The water treatment was based on treating potable well water with - carbon

filters / sand filters/ Reverse osmosis membranes - yielding 50 micro Siemens RO water that are corrosive for the equipment. Then mixing them with potable well water at 80/20 ratio.

Problem Description• The RO water system inlet was connected directly to the city water system.• The water were too corrosive for some parts of the equipment, so they were

mixed with potable water in order to elevate ion content and conductivity. (20% potable water)

• The potable water were not treated so they introduced Chlorine, silt, bacteria and hardness back into the treated water causing contamination.

• The potable water quality varied so the solution composition varied from time to time.

• The RO system was old and was due for replacement.

Problem Analysis• The basic requirements for the CIP water treatment :• Chlorination to remove Biological contamination.• Filtration to remove particles.• Softening to remove scaling compounds \ Ions.• De-Chlorination to avoid oxidizers.• Conductivity between 200-400 Micro- Siemens to make the water less corrosive.• The process would have to be efficient in terms of energy and chemical

consumption.• Product recovery has to be improved.

Proposed solution• A water treatment system that would supply 100% treated water at the required parameters • The design for the new system includes:• Circulated feed water tank with Chlorination control.• MMF Filtration followed by cartridge filtration.• Anti-Scalant injection system for scaling protection.• SBS injection system for Dechlorination.• Nano-Filtration membrane system:• Overall Recovery = 85%. + 7% reject recycle =92%• Low energy cost = 50% less pressure than Reverse osmosis.• Producing Soft water at 200 MicroSiemens.• 100% of the water is treated – Less contamination & Less Risk.
