D. The Trinity – fourth part – The Light

1. Introduction

This document is a continuation on the study of the Trinity. There is a constant theme in the

Bible using ‘light” as righteousness and darkness as evil. The theme revolves around Jesus as we

are told He is the light. The following is a collection of scripture of the light in the theme of

righteousness as found first in the Old Testament and then in the New Testament. The following

focuses on the spiritual light and not on the visual light that we see with our eyes. The following

uses verses from the Scriptures Bible. Jesus name in Hebrew is Yeshua. In the Scriptures Bible the

Hebrew word “Elohim” has multiple meanings, it can be God, or a mighty one, or a messenger, or a

chief, or a person of authority, or land owner, etc. In most Bibles Elohim is always translated as

God, which is not always correct.

2. Light in Old Testament

Gen 1:13 And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the third day.

Gen 1:14 And Elohim said, “Let lights come to be in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and appointed times, and for days and years,

Gen 1:15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth.” And it came to be so.

Gen 1:16 And Elohim made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars.

Gen 1:17 And Elohim set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,

The above is visual light at the creation of the world and is given here, it will be used in a

comparison near the end of this study. Note that it occurs during the third day of creation.

Exo 13:21 And יהוה went before them by day in a column of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a column of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.

Exo 13:22 The column of cloud did not cease by day, nor the column of fire by night, before the people.

Exo 14:19 And the Messenger of Elohim, who went before the camp of Yisra’ěl, moved and went behind them. And the column of cloud went from before them and stood behind them,

Exo 14:20 and came between the camp of the Mitsrites and the camp of Yisra’ěl. And it was the cloud and the darkness, and it gave light by night, and the one did not come near the other all the night.

Neh 9:12 “And You led them by day with a cloudy column, and by night with a column of fire, to give them light in the way they were to go.

It was the light of fire coming directly from Elohim that gave protection to the Israelites as

they fled from the Egypt.

Exo 25:37 “And you shall make seven lamps for it, and they shall mount its lamps so that they give light in front of it.

This is instruction of making the menorah, which is a symbol of the divine light of God

coming into the world as well as a symbol of life in man and completion of God’s work thus it is

made with seven lamps. It could be taken that each lamp represents a thousand years with the

center lamp representing the Millennium Kingdom on earth, the total being the seven thousand

years of man living on this earth. To understand this one must know the Moadim or God’s Holy

Days (appointed times).

1Ki 11:36 And to his son I give one tribe, so that My servant Dawiḏ shall always have a lamp before Me in Yerushalayim, the city which I have chosen for Myself, to put My Name there.

2Ki 8:19 However, יהוה(God) would not destroy Yehuḏah, for the sake of Dawiḏ His servant, as He promised him to give a lamp to him and his sons forever.

2Ch 21:7 However, יהוה would not destroy the house of Dawiḏ, because of the covenant He had made with Dawiḏ, and since He had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons, all the days.

For David the Lord makes a lamp shine continually before his seed in Jerusalem, this being

a spiritual lamp of leadership and ruling over Judah and Israel.

Est 8:16 For the Yehuḏim there was light and gladness and joy and value.

The Lord gave a spiritual light to His chosen people, one of gladness, Joy and value.

In the book of Job there is lots of scripture referring to light and darkness, with the theme of

life and death or righteousness and evil. Only a select few scriptures are given below. Job is

suffering at the hand of Satan and is trying to understand why God’s spiritual light has been hidden

from him.

Job 3:3 “Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night it was said, ‘A male child has been conceived.’

Job 3:4 Let that day be darkness. Let not Eloah from above seek for it, nor let light shine upon it.

Job 3:5 Let darkness and the shadow of death buy it back, let a cloud dwell on it, let all that blackens the day frighten it.

Job 3:6 That night – let darkness seize it. Let it not be included among the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

Job 3:7 Look, let that night be silent! Let no singing come into it!

Job 3:8 Let those curse it who curse the day, who are ready to stir up Liwiathan.

Job 3:9 Let the stars of its twilight be dark. Let it wait for light, but have none. And let it not see the eyelashes of the dawn

Job 12:22 revealing deep matters out of darkness, and He brings the shadow of death to light;

Job 12:24 turning aside the heart of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and He makes them wander in a pathless waste.

Job 12:25 They grope in darkness, having no light, and He makes them stagger like a drunkard.

Job 18:5 Indeed, the light of the wrong goes out, and the flame of his fire does not shine.

Job 18:6 The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp beside him is put out.

Job 22:28 And whatever you decide on shall be established for you, and light shine on your ways.

Job 24:13 They have become rebels against the light; they have not known His ways nor remained in His paths.

Job 24:14 The murderer rises at daylight, he kills· the poor and needy, and in the night he is as a thief.

Job 28:11 He dams up the sources of the rivers; and he brings to light what is hidden.

Job 29:2 “Oh, that I were as in months past, as in the days when Eloah protected me;

Job 29:3 when His lamp shone on my head, when I walked in the dark by His light;

Job 30:26 When I looked for good, then evil came to me. And when I waited for light, darkness came.

Also there are many scriptures in Psalms addressing the spiritual light that God brings into

the world. Again only a select few are given below.

Psa 4:6 Many are saying, “Who would show us good?” יהוה, lift up the light of Your face upon us.

Psa 18:27 For You save the afflicted people, But bring down those whose eyes are haughty.

Psa 18:28 For You Yourself light my lamp; יהוה my Elohim makes my darkness light.

Psa 27:1 יהוה is my light and my deliverance; Whom should I fear? יהוה is the refuge of my life; Whom should I dread?

Psa 37:6 And He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your right-ruling as midday.

Psa 97:11 Light is sown for the righteous, And gladness for the upright in heart.

Psa 112:4 Zayin Light has risen in the darkness to the straight ones, Those showing favour, Ḥet The compassionate, And the righteous.

Psa 119:105 Nun Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

The following scriptures address the way of walking forward in the light, the light of the

Torah, the way of righteousness, and wisdom allowing us to walk in the light and not in darkness.

Pro 6:23 For the command is a lamp, And the Torah a light,a And reproofs of discipline a way of

life, Footnote: a Psa_119:105.

Pro 13:9 The light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wrong is put out.

Ecc 2:13 Then I saw that wisdom is better than folly, as light is better than darkness.

Again in Isaiah only a few select scriptures are taken as found below.

Isa 2:5 O house of Ya‛aqoḇ, come and let us walk in the light of יהוה.

Isa 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for

darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Isa 8:20 To the Torah and to the witness! If they do not speak according to this Word, it is

because they have no daybreak.a Footnote: aOr light.

Isa 10:17 And the Light of Yisra’ěl shall be for a fire, and his Set-apart One for a flame. And it shall burn and devour his weeds and his thornbushes in one day,

Isa 42:6 “I, יהוה, have called You in righteousness, and I strengthena Your hand and guard You,

and give You for a covenant to a people, for a light to the nations, Footnote: aCommonly understood as “take hold of .”

Isa 51:4 “Listen to Me, My people, and give ear to Me, O My nation, for the Torah goes forth from Me, and My right-ruling I set as a light to peoples.

Isa 60:19 “No longer is the sun your light by day, nor does the moon give light to you for brightness, but יהוה shall be to you an everlasting light, and your Elohim your comeliness.

Isa 60:20 “No longer does your sun go down, nor your moon withdraw itself, for יהוה shall be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning shall be ended.

Mic 7:8 Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy. When I have fallen I have risen, when I sit in darkness יהוה is a light to me.

Mic 7:9 I bear the displeasure of יהוה, for I have sinned against Him, until He pleads my case, and shall execute right-ruling for me, until He brings me out into the light and I look on His righteousness.

There is considerable scripture throughout the Old Testament that tells us of the spiritual

light that is from the Lord. It guides us along the path of righteousness, doing the Lord’s

commandments and the Torah, keeping these are the same as walking forward in the light. The

manner in which God’s chosen are to walk forward is to be a light unto the Nations.

3. Light in the New Testament

The light in the New Testament is focused mainly upon Yeshua and His ministry. With

Yeshua the Spiritual Light came into the world.

Mat 4:12 And יהושע ( Yeshua) Natsareth, He came and dwelt in Kephar Naḥum, which is by the

sea, in the borders of Zeḇulun and Naphtali,

Mat 4:14 to fill what was spoken by Yeshayahu the prophet, saying,

Mat 4:15 “Land of Zeḇulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Yarděn, Galil of the nations –

Mat 4:16 the people who sat in darkness saw a great light, and upon those who sat

in the land and shadow of death, light arose to them.” Isa_9:1-2.

Mat 4:17 From that time יהושע began to proclaim and to say, “Repent, for the reign of the heavens has drawn near.”

Mat 5:14 “You are the light of the world. It is impossible for a city to be hidden on a mountain.

Mat 5:15 “Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it shines to all those in the house.

Mat 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, so that they see your good works and praise your Father who is in the heavens

Mat 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart shall be also.

Mat 6:22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, all your body shall be enlightened.

Mat 6:23 “But if your eye is evil,b all your body shall be darkened. If, then, the light that is

within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Footnote: bThis is a Hebrew idiom – a good eye means to be generous, while an evil eye means to be stingy.

Luk 2:25 And see, there was a man in Yerushalayim whose name was Shim‛on, and this man was righteous and dedicated, looking for the comforting of Yisra’ěl. And the Set-apart Spirit was upon him.

Luk 2:26 And it had been revealed to him by the Set-apart Spirit that he would not see death before he sees the Messiah of יהוה.

Luk 2:27 And he came in the Spirit into the Set-apart Place. And as the parents brought in the Child יהושע, to do for Him according to the usual practice of the Torah,

Luk 2:28 then he took Him up in his arms and blessed Elohim and said,

Luk 2:29 “Now let Your servant go in peace, O Master, according to Your word,

Luk 2:30 for my eyes have seen Your deliverance,

Luk 2:31 which You have prepared before the face of all the peoples,

Luk 2:32 a light for the unveiling of the nations, Isa_42:6, Isa_49:6 and the esteem of Your people Yisra’ěl.”

Luk 2:33 And Yosěph and His mother were marvelling at what was said about Him.

Joh 1:2 He was in the beginning with Elohim.

Joh 1:3 All came to be through Him,a and without Him not even one came to be that came to

be. Footnote: a Eph_3:9, Col_1:16, Heb_1:2, Heb_11:3, 2Pe_3:5, Psa_33:6.

Joh 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Joh 1:5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Joh 1:9 He was the true Light, which enlightens every man, coming into the world.

Joh 1:10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through Him, and the world did not know Him.

Joh 1:11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

Joh 3:19 “And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were wicked.

Joh 3:20 “For everyone who is practising evil matters hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

Joh 3:21 “But the one doing the truth comes to the light, so that his works are clearly seen, that they have been wrought in Elohim.”

Joh 8:12 Therefore יהושע spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who

follows Me shall by no means walk in darkness, but possess the light of life.”b Footnote: bSee also Joh_11:9-10, Joh 7:53-8:11 does not appear in the Aramaic Peshitta or Aramaic Old Syriac texts.

Joh 9:4 “It is necessary for Me to work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day – night is coming, when no one is able to work.

Joh 9:5 “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Joh 11:9 יהושע answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

Joh 11:10 “But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

Joh 12:34 The crowd answered Him, “We have heard out of the Torah that the Messiah remains forever. And how do You say, ‘The Son of Aḏam has to be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Aḏam?”

Joh 12:35 יהושע, therefore, said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. And he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.

Joh 12:36 “While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you become sons of light.” These words יהושע spoke, and went off and was hidden from them.

Joh 12:44 Then יהושע cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.

Joh 12:45 “And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.

Joh 12:46 “I have come as a light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me should stay

in darkness.

Act 13:47 “For so the Master has commanded us, ‘I have set you to be a light to the

nations, that you should be for deliverance to the ends of the earth.’ ” Isa_49:6.

Act 26:17 delivering you from the people, and the nations, to whom I now send you,

Act 26:18 to open their eyes, to turn them from darkness to light,b and the authority of Satan to Elohim, in order for them to receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are

set-apart by belief in Me.’ Footnote: b Isa_42:6-7, Isa_60:2-3, Rev_21:24.

Act 26:23 that the Messiah would suffer, would be the first to rise from the dead, He would proclaim light to the people and to the nations.”

Rom 2:17 See, you are called a Yehuḏi, and rest on the Torah, and make your boast in Elohim,

Rom 2:18 and know the desire of Elohim, and approve what is superior, being instructed out of the Torah,

Rom 2:19 and are trusting that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,

Rom 2:20 an instructor of foolish ones, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and of

the truth in the Torah.d Footnote: d Psa_147:19, Rom_3:2, Rom_9:4.

Rom 13:12 The night is far advanced, the day has come near. So let us put off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

1Co 4:5 So do not judge any at all before the time, until the Master comes, who shall bring to light what is hidden in darkness and reveal the thoughts of the hearts. And then each one’s praise shall come from Elohim.

2Co 4:4 in whom the mighty one of this agea has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, so that the enlightening of the Good News of the esteem of Messiah, who is the likeness of Elohim, does

not shine on them. Footnote: aSee Luk_4:6.

2Co 4:5 For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Messiah יהושע the Master, and ourselves your servants for the sake of יהושע.

2Co 4:6 For Elohim, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts for the enlightening of the knowledge of the esteem of Elohim in the face of יהושע Messiah.

Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness,b but now you are> light in the Master. Walk as children

of light – Footnote: bSee Eph_2:2, Eph_4:18, Col_3:7.

Eph 5:9 for the fruit of the Spiritc is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth – Footnote: cSee Php_1:11.

Eph 5:13 But all matters being convictedd are manifested by the light, for whatever is

manifested is light. Footnote: dSee Joh_16:8.

Eph 5:14 That is why He says, “Wake up, you who sleep, Isa_26:19 and arise from the dead, and Messiah shall shine on you.”

Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father who has made us fit to share in the inheritance of the set-apart ones in the light,

Col 1:13 who has delivered us from the authority of darknessa and transferred us into the reign

of the Son of His love, Footnote: a Luk_11:35, Joh_8:12, Joh_12:46-50, Act_26:18, Eph_5:8.

1Th 5:4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.

1Th 5:5 For you are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.

1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen race,b Deu_10:15 a royal priesthood,c Isa_61:6 a set-apart

nation,d Exo_19:6 a people for a possession,e Isa_43:2 that you should proclaim the

praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light, Footnotes: bAlso see

2Pe 1:18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the set-apart mountain.

2Pe 1:19 And we have the prophetic word made more certain, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,

1Jn 1:5 And this is the message which we have heard from Him and announce to you, that Elohim is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

1Jn 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and are not doing the truth.

1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of יהושע Messiah His Son cleanses us from all sin.

1Jn 2:8 Again I write you a fresh command, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light now shines.

1Jn 2:9 The one who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in the darkness until now.

1Jn 2:10 The one who loves his brother stays in the light, and there is no stumbling-block in him.

1Jn 2:11 But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Rev 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, nor of the moon, to shine in it, for the esteem of Elohim lightened it, and the Lamb is its lamp.

Rev 21:24 And the nations, of those who are saved, shall walk in its light,f and the sovereigns of

the earth bring their esteem into it. Footnote: fSee Isa_60:3.

Rev 22:5 And night shall be no more, and they shall have no need of a lamp or the light of the sun, because יהוה Elohim shall give them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.

We are told a great deal from the above scriptures, they need to be read carefully. First

Yeshua tells us He is the light, the Spiritual light and He is life. As the light, Yeshua came into the

world. The light comes from going forth in love and following the Torah. The light is man’s armour,

it grows inside of him, man becomes the light to others when he walks according to Yeshua, the

light banishes the darkness out of man. The light is goodness, righteousness, truth and life. The

opposite is darkness which is evil, hate, wickedness, misery, destruction, death, ignorance and

sorrow.

In the New Jerusalem, both the Father and the Son are light. This means both visual and

spiritual.

4. Yeshua is the Light of the World

Knowing that Yeshua is the Light and life we need to look at one more set of scriptures. In

the beginning before the sun and the moon were made, which occurred on the third day, see the

scripture at the beginning of this document. Now examine the following very carefully, the Father

made light and saw that it was good, this occurred on the first day.

Gen 1:3 And Elohim said, “Let light come to be,” and light came to be.

Gen 1:4 And Elohim saw the light, that it was good. And Elohim separated the light from the darkness.

Gen 1:5 And Elohim called the light ‘day’ and the darkness He called ‘night.’ And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, one day.

Combined with other scripture the Light that came to be on the first day was Christ.

Consider also the following;

Psa 72:17 Let His Name be forever, His Name continue before the sun; And let them bless themselves in Him; Let all nations call Him blessed.

Yes the name of Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Jesus Christ or Jesus the Messiah) as the light was

brought into existence before the sun was created. If we follow and obey what Yeshua told us and

showed us, then we walk in the light and the light is within us.
