FIRST READING

2 Samuel 7:1-11,16

God's promise to David CEV

2 Samuel 7:1-11,16  R: The first reading for the fourth

Sunday of Advent is written in Chapter 7 of 2nd Samuel beginning at verse 1.

King David moved into his new palace, and the LORD let his kingdom be at peace.

2 Samuel 7:1-11,16  2Then one day, as David was talking with

Nathan the prophet, David said, "Look around! I live in a palace made of cedar, but the sacred chest has to stay in a tent."

3Nathan replied, "The LORD is with you, so do what you want!”

2 Samuel 7:1-11,16  4That night, the LORD told Nathan 5to go

to David and give him this message: David, you are my servant, so listen to

what I say. Why should you build a temple for me? 6I didn't live in a temple when I brought my people out of Egypt, and I don't live in one now. A tent has always been my home wherever I have gone with them.

2 Samuel 7:1-11,16  7I chose leaders and told them to be like

shepherds for my people Israel. But did I ever say anything to even one of them about building a cedar temple for me?

2 Samuel 7:1-11,16  8David, this is what I, the LORD All-

Powerful, say to you. I brought you in from the fields where you took care of sheep, and I made you the leader of my people. 9Wherever you went, I helped you and destroyed your enemies right in front of your eyes. I have made you one of the most famous people in the world.

2 Samuel 7:1-11,16  10I have given my people Israel a land of

their own where they can live in peace, and they won't have to tremble with fear any more. Evil nations won't bother them, as they did 11when I let judges rule my people. And I have kept your enemies from attacking you. Now I promise that you and your descendants will be kings.

2 Samuel 7:1-11,16  16I will make sure that one of your

descendants will always be king. This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

My soul is praising the Lord   My soul is praising the Lord, yes!

And glad for all he is saving;

because the Lord has remembered me — small as I am, poor as I am

— all people will call me blessed.

My soul is praising the Lord   1. For he that is mighty has done

me great things. (Holy his name. Holy his name.) His mercy is reaching from age to age. (Holy his name. Holy his name.) To all those who honour him..

My soul is praising the Lord   My soul is praising the Lord, yes!

And glad for all he is saving;

because the Lord has remembered me — small as I am, poor as I am

— all people will call me blessed.

My soul is praising the Lord   2. For he that is mighty has stretched

out his hand. (Scattered the proud, shattered their plans.) He’s pulled down the princes from their golden thrones... (Scattered the proud, shattered their plans.) He has raised to their place the poor.

My soul is praising the Lord   My soul is praising the Lord, yes!

And glad for all he is saving;

because the Lord has remembered me — small as I am, poor as I am

— all people will call me blessed.

My soul is praising the Lord   3. He’s filled up the hungry with

many good things. (Earth is renewed, all things renewed.) But the rich, he has sent them all empty away. (Earth is renewed, all things renewed.) He has kept now the promise he made.

My soul is praising the Lord   My soul is praising the Lord, yes!

And glad for all he is saving;

because the Lord has remembered me — small as I am, poor as I am

SECOND READING

Romans 16:25-27 CEV

God reveals his age-long purpose in Jesus.

Romans 16:25-27

R: The second reading is written in chapter 16 of Romans beginning at verse 25.

25Praise God! He can make you strong by means of my good news, which is the message about Jesus Christ. For ages and ages this message was kept secret, 26but now at last it has been told.

Romans 16:25-27

The eternal God commanded his prophets to write about the good news, so that all nations would obey and have faith. 27And now, because of Jesus Christ, we can praise the only wise God forever! Amen.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

gospel

Luke 1:26-38

God's call to Mary CEV

Luke 1:26-38

M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter 1 of the Gospel according to St Luke beginning at verse 26.

C: Glory to You O Lord.

Luke 1:26-38  26One month later God sent

the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee 27with a message for a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to Joseph from the family of King David.

Luke 1:26-38  28The angel greeted Mary and

said, "You are truly blessed! The Lord is with you."

29Mary was confused by the angel's words and wondered what they meant.

Luke 1:26-38  30Then the angel told Mary,

"Don't be afraid! God is pleased with you, 31and you will have a son. His name will be Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of God Most High.

Luke 1:26-38

The Lord God will make him king, as his ancestor David was.

33He will rule the people of Israel forever, and his kingdom will never end.“

Luke 1:26-38  34Mary asked the angel, "How

can this happen? I am not married!"

35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come down to you, and God's power will come over you. So your child will be called the holy Son of God.

Luke 1:26-38  36Your relative Elizabeth is also

going to have a son, even though she is old. No one thought she could ever have a baby, but in three months she will have a son. 37Nothing is impossible for God!”

Luke 1:26-38  38Mary said, "I am the LORD'S

servant! Let it happen as you have said." And the angel left her.

We sing:

Your love surrounds me v.1,3,4

LHS 878 CAL 293

Robin Mann 1949- (1978)

Your love surrounds me

1. Your love surrounds me

like a tent around me

on a dark and stormy night.

Though fear is creeping

as the darkness deepens,

I will stay beside this light:

Your love surrounds me

I will live with you for ever,

I will live inside your shelter,

I will live with you for ever

in the house of God.

Your love surrounds me

3. You left your Father,

O my baby brother,

for the manger and the cross.

Your death is life for me,

you killed my enemy,

O, death has finally lost:

Your love surrounds me

I will live with you for ever,

I will live inside your shelter,

I will live with you for ever

in the house of God.

Your love surrounds me

4. The broken people,

and the poor and feeble

find a place of shelter here.

There’s room for more to come

and join the Father’s Son,

his love will take your fear:

Your love surrounds me

I will live with you for ever,

I will live inside your shelter,

I will live with you for ever

in the house of God.
