Certainly this fact and the traditional affinity to the technical and artistic creativity led (since the establishment of the independent Czechoslovakia in 1918) here in Czechia (and later on in Slovakia, too) to the development and growth of avia- tion industry and of transport, sports and touring aviation in gen- eral. Just in the pre-war period the Czechoslovak aviation industry developed and produced in series 50 diverse types of touring and sports aircraft. Over 40 types of these categories and some 20 types of gliders were developed, produced in substantial numbers and exported by Czechoslovak factories between 1945 and 1990. The political and social change following the 1990 brought a major growth in the recreational flying with ultralight aircraft. Many of these aircraft were designed and built by amateurs, but a large number is now manufactured professionally by small and medium- sized aviation companies. The administrative and legal work and care of the complete realm of ultraligth flying was in the Czech Republic entrusted by law to the Czech Light Aircraft Association (LAA ČR), The LAA, during its twenty years of operation, has cer- tified and approved manufacture of nearly 50 types of aircraft. The Registry of the LAA ČR now keeps records of two and half thou- sand of mostly private ultralight aircraft. Besides production for the domestic use the Czech companies export yearly the world over about 500 light aircraft, especially in the UL and LSA categories. The Czech Republic belongs to the top producers of this kind of aviation equipment. The Czech producers of parachutes and paragliders are proud of the same success like their "winged" counterparts. Many sports parachutists and paragliding pilots now descend and fly on the equipment Made in Czech Republic. The Czech technical universities support in their syllabi all categories of General Aviation. A good picture of the standard of the Czech aviation is provided by the number of medals brought home by our sport aviators from the World, European and international con- tests in the ultralight flying, paragliding, parachuting, soaring, aer- obatics and navigation rallies. The Czech Republic is a country of recreational and sports flying, a country of a developed aviation industry. Our task is to uphold the tradition that machines with the proud Czech "OK" in their reg- istration or in their birth licence continue to be an example of the creative technical mastery and aesthetic delight. To care that the light flying machines would shorten the distances between people and provide joy and pleasure to their crews and onlookers alike, brought sporting performance and healthy thrill. Little aircraft with a great mission

To the Czech Republic, landlocked far from the seas in the heartof Europe, the aviation opens the ocean of air and brings closerthe remote horizons. Certainly this fact and the traditional affinityto the technical and artistic creativity led (since the establishmentof the independent Czechoslovakia in 1918) here in Czechia (andlater on in Slovakia, too) to the development and growth of avia-tion industry and of transport, sports and touring aviation in gen-eral. Just in the pre-war period the Czechoslovak aviation industrydeveloped and produced in series 50 diverse types of touring andsports aircraft. Over 40 types of these categories and some 20types of gliders were developed, produced in substantial numbersand exported by Czechoslovak factories between 1945 and 1990.The political and social change following the 1990 brought a majorgrowth in the recreational flying with ultralight aircraft. The concept of the tests● Each structure has therefore to pass a system of strength tests, covering the requirements of the regula-tions to at least the calculated loads.

● The tests are carried out at normal temperatures,therefore various additional coefficients are applied to theresults to cater for the specific thermal properties of com-posites as deemed necessary.

● With the wings the ultimate strength (loading todestruction) tests are preferred to ascertain the actualstrength reserves of the airframe. Often the failed criticalpoints of structures are appropriately strengthened andthe tests are repeated to find eventual other critical points.Cooperation with the Institute of Aerospace Engineeringof Brno University of Technology takes place here.

● The tests results are in case of failures compared to the design calculations and thus they serve to precisedesign calculaton methods.

The aviation education has a long-standing tradition at the universitiesof Brno; it brought, besides e.g. the development of the turbine aeroengines, also some pioneering aircraft designs and high-performancegliders of the thirties and sixties.

In 1982 at the Brno University of Technology the Aviation depart-ment has been re-established and in 1993 the University had foundedits Institute of Aerospace Engineering (IAE), led by Prof. Ing. AntonínPíštěk, CSc., as a part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. TheIAE task is to educate aviation professionals and to undertake scien-tific and research activities.

The Institute offers master degree in aircraft design and in aircraftoperations, a baccalaureate study for professional pilots, using its flying school, and also the graduate (PhD) studies. The work of the IAEis from the beginning aimed at a close cooperation with companies of the Czech aerospace industry and currently also at some EuropeanCommunity projects.

In 2000 the Aerospace Research Centre (ARC) has been created,based on the programme of research centres of the Ministry of Youth,Education and Sports of the Czech Republic (MŠMT). The AerospaceResearch Centre's work is supervised by a fifteen-member council,with an absolute majority of industry representatives, thus the Centreensures a transfer of research results to the aviation industry and the feedback of the industry knowledge to the research sites.

The activities of the IAE and ARC are aimed at aerodynamics, mod-ern technologies and materials, systems' reliability, hydraulic systems,space research and at the aeronautical structures, strength and life of aircraft and also at the economic aspects of the aircraft development.

An important asset of the IAE is the test facility with the Czech CAAcertificate for static and fatigue testing of aircraft structures.

The MarS, a.s. a Czech company, is the largestproducer of parachutes and prachuting equipmentin the Central-European region. The long-timeexperience in development and production becamea basis for the line of the ATL and PTCH rescue(safety) parachutes. Currently the MarS a.s. pro-duces and markets four types of back-parachutesand two types of seat rescue parachutes. They areslated for use in emergency by pilots of sports air-craft, gliders or helicopters. A number of actual, livejumps in the recent years, especially during gliders’crashes, prove the reliability of MarS parachutes.The novelty for the 2009 is the use of the ATL para-chutes with a cable version of the MPAAD safetydevice (based on the requirements of the CzechArmed Forces). This combination of parachute anddevice increases the probability of pilot’s rescue in emergency, when for whatever reason he wouldbe unable to deploy the parachute. The MPAADwould do it for him automatically.Another novelty is an increase in the re-packagingcycle of the ATL parachutes to 365 days.

The Czech Republic lies land-lockedamong many countries in the veryheart of Europe. Thanks to its locationit experienced many dramatic momentsduring the ages, but it also became a meeting point of European cultures,growing, welcoming and giving home tomany world-class thinkers, writers,architects, painters, sculptors andmusicians. One meets their ideas mate-rialised in works of art gracing the his-toric Czech towns and cities, castlesand chateaux as well as countrymanors. Paying a visit to the capital ofPrague, to Moravian Kroměříž, to SouthBohemian Český Krumlov and manyother places is therefore akin to taking a living arts history course, it is a meetingwith beauty.

Also the nature of Czechia is some-thing to behold - it offers deep forestswith lurking game, slopes of mountains,both steep ranges and gentle uplands,fertile basins and lowlands aroundcurving rivers, a fisher's paradise. Thevast mirrors of ponds and deep riverdam reservoirs teem with fowl and fish.

In the recent years,the free flying over Czechia has attract-ed many pilots from abroad, in additionto the already hooked domestic avia-tors. Many Czech airfields now offer a good accommodation for aviationtourists, providing at the same time thetechnical base for the needs of theirwinged mounts…

The Czech Republic is a beautifuland friendly country, both for the land-bound tourists and for those whowould prefer the bird's eye perspectiveand free motion in the blue sky. It is aseasy as just flying in and seeing foryourself …

As in the automobilism also in the aviation many enthusiastscovet the veteran and vintage machines. Some restore them,often to a state better than the original series production veteranenjoyed when it left the production shops, some build the repli-cas true to the original that disappeared long ago, according to old blueprints and often with almost detective finding of infor-mation. Some of the replicas belong to the category of ultralightaircraft. In Czechia this activity is a domain not only of entusias-tic individuals and volunteer groups, but also of small, highly spe-cialised firms. All of them repair, restore or build from stratch theirmachines for their owners' personal pleasure as well as for edu-cation and enlightenment of the general public in matters of tech-nical beauty. The vintage sailplane enthusiasts aggregate in theCzech POTC (Oldtimer gliding Club) and organize their own

aviation contests. The restorers, builders and pilots of historicpowered airplanes meet the public at air shows organised fromspring till autumn at many airfelds around Czechia and also at the historic aircraft fly-ins. Their dexterity and profound knowl-edge of their matter has been used to advantage several timesby film-makers to build replicas, both flying and otherwise, for historic motion pictures.Thanks to effort of hundreds of these enthusiasts it is possibleto see in the sky, besides the sleek and sometimes mundaneall metal or all-composite "spam can", also the old and "hairy"classic aeroplanes built of wood and rag. They shine with a special beauty and despite their antique (or antiquated) looksmost of them fly pretty well.

The air sports have a long tradition in Czechia - the first medalsfrom international contests were won by Czechoslovak pilotsalready in the nineteen-twenties. Also now our pilots occupy a prominent position in many aviation disciplines. Our tradition-al specialty is the aerobatics, precision flying and navigation,gliding and parachutism. Lately we belong to the top in theultralight flying, too, winning several titles of World andEuropean Team Champions, while the paragliding pilots alsobring brilliant results and the hang-gliding pilots placed verywell in international contests.

At the Paragliding World Championships 2009 that tookplace early this year in Mexico, the Czech team, consisting of T. Brauner, D. Ohlídal, M. Orlík and R. Kunová, won for thesecond time in a row the title of World Champions.No wonder the Czech sport aviators were for this year award-ed the organizing of several World championships:Between 12th and 23rd August 2009 at the Jihlava airfield the12th World Ultralight Flying Championships shall take place.Between 3rdJuly and 7th August 2009 at the Nové Město nadMetují airfield the World Powered Paragliding Championshipsshall be flown.
