Napoleon’s Rise

• War Hero during the Revolution (all agreed)

• Overthrew the weak Directory and set up 3 man Consulate (Roman System)

• Soon Napoleon named himself Emperor.

• People of France voted for him every step of the way in plebiscite elections. (they loved him)

Why Napoleon?

• Rebuilt France (buildings, roads, canals)

• Set up good schools

• Agreed with the Church (religious freedom)

• Napoleonic Code – new set of laws (Nap favored order over individual freedom)

Napoleonic Wars

• Napoleon soon took on most of the powers of Europe in wars.

• Great tactician, always coming up with new plans (Napoleon is worth 40,000 men)

• Created a huge French Empire

• Annexed (added) Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Germany

Continental System

• Soon came up against the British, lost at first at naval Battle of Trafalgar

• Planned a Continental System where he would strategically block British ships from all European ports (conquered most of Europe)

• System failed because British went to America and India

• French ideas spread all over Europe.
