Was responsible for the introduction of computer technology at the laboratory, both
for technical and administrative purposes and represented the laboratory in the
Faculty Computer Science working group. Was the first to apply computer
technology to the hydraulic design of turbines and pumps.
Utilizing my knowledge of Manufacturing System Theory, I made a computer
program for the analysis of sprinkler system for fire fighting purposes. The computer
model which was based upon my own theoretical work was successfully tested
against the sprinkler system on a refinery in Norway. The refinery also paid for the
development.
1984-1987 Group leader. SINTEF Division of Turbomachinery
Employed as employee nr.4 during the initialisation of the building of this laboratory,
but was mainly responsible for theoretical work related to the use of computer
technology in the design and performance prediction of turbines, pumps and fans.

Curriculum Vitae for Mads Grahl-Madsen page 3 of 14
1990 - 1990 Group Leader. SINTEF Division of Turbomachinery
Due to a divorce I returned to my prior employer to be closer to my children. was set
to be responsible to develop an activity within environmental technology and fluid
power. This was a short employment, only 8 months due to SINTEFs decision to sell
the laboratory. The laboratory was sold to Kvaerner and later to GE. It is today
operated by Rainpower
1990-1992 General Manager, Quintus Technology AS
I initiated this company, in order to develop multiphase metering instruments that
could be applied to systems for collection of oil spills at sea,. The activity was
financed by Norsk Hydro (at that time also a Norwegian oil company), Framo (my
former employer) and the Norwegian Research Council.
In the end the market was not ready for this technology and the company was
liquidated.
I was responsible for technology, HR and general management.
1992-1993 General Manager, Petreco AS
This was a short engagement in a situation where the owners of Quintus Technology
and Petreco was considering a merger between the two companies. Petreco was
mainly a laboratory that analysed the chemical composition of crude oil, and the
merger was intended to create a company with two related technological platforms
for further growth.
I was mainly involved in HR and general management.
As Quintus Technology was liquidated, the merger was cancelled and I left the
company short thereafter.
1993-1993 Officer, The National Guard
In a period of eight months I was off and on engaged as transport officer at NATO
and domestic exercises by the National Guard. As such I was responsible for
transportation, logistics and combat readiness for the transport section mainly
consisting of military administrative and cargo vehicles prior to, during and after the
exercise. This also included units of the military police. I one occasion I also had the
operational responsibility for a helicopter squadron.
I served in the Norwegian National Guard from I was sixteen until I was 44 years old,
with the exception of one year when I served as a squad commander in the
Norwegian standing forces in Northern Norway.
1993-2001 Associate Professor, Norwegian University of Science and Technology . Division of
Thermal Energy and Hydropower.
In 1993 one of my former Professors was retiring and I was asked to fill his position.
My responsibility was initially also to act as a laboratory engineer at the Water Power
laboratory. This additional responsibility ceased after well one year when a new
person was employed in this position and my further activity was within fluid power,
as head of the institutes academic group for fluid power.
I had the responsibility for the specialisation of fluid power within the Master
program, activities related to continuous education, the research activities and the
operation and development of the fluid power laboratory.
A large part of my time during this period was participation in international and
national research and industrial forums within the fluid power industry. The scientific
activity within fluid power at the university had not been given much attention from
my former professor and I was therefore giving this much attention. We was never
able to compete with the resources available to research centres in the UK, Finland
and Germany, but within fluid cleanliness we obtained a reputation.
Curriculum Vitae for Mads Grahl-Madsen page 4 of 14
1998-2002 Associate, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Monash University. Melbourne.
Australia
I visited Australia several times during this period and participated as a lecturer in
continuous education courses for industrial engineers. These courses was mainly
focused on simulation, fluid cleanliness and control theory.
2001 -2009 Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical and Marine Engineering, Bergen
University College, Faculty of Engineering
My present wife, which is a Polish national, did not find herself at home in
Trondheim, so when the opportunity came I decided to move my activity to Bergen.
Initially I got the responsibility for lecturing in Material Science, but my
responsibilities was increased to include lecturing and supervision in fluid power and
hydraulic machinery, control systems and manufacturing systems.
During this period I also made a number of hydraulic turbine designs for a small
manufacturer in the region. I was also a few times called upon by my former
employer Framo Engineering to participate in a taskforce focusing on critical errors
in design or operation where there was very little time to do corrective measures.
In the last part of this period I was on unpaid leave as my activities was elsewhere.
2003-2005 Director, Department of Mechanical and Marine Engineering, Bergen
University College, Faculty of Engineering
This was a new concept introduced this year, and I was employed in the position in
competition with both internal and external applicants. During this period I employed
2 professors in full time, and initiated a PhD program in cooperation with Krakow
University of Technology. I also initiated a student exchange program under the
Erasmus concept with Krakow University of Technology where Norwegian students
took a semester in Poland, and Polish students a semester in Norway.
I also initiated regular meetings between the staff and the students at the institute
where news and information was exchanged, and at the same time was a forum for
discussions and contact between students and academic staff.
During this period I also developed a new BSc program for Energy Technology, and
started a external campus where BSc students worked close to the local subsea
industry. This was later formalised into a National Research Centre for subsea
technology.
2005-2006 Director, SINTEF Polska Sp.zo.o
In connection with large Norwegian EEA funds made available for R&D in Poland
SINTEF wanted to start a subsidiary in Poland. I got the job to develop this. the
Norwegian SINTEF model with an R&D cooperation between Universities and
industries on behalf of the industry was very unfamiliar to Poland and most money
made available through the Norwegian EEA funding went to Polish industrial
companies directly, or to infrastructure projects. in the last period of 2006 we
strengthen the organisation with a general manager, and I was to focus on potential
projects. However, it is fair to say that it was not a success, and SINTEF
consequently terminated the subsidiary.
During this period I got a wide spread network in Poland, and abroad and was in
2006 asked to start an operation for FMC Technologies in Poland. Until they was
able to get their own director in place, I carried out the establishment of the company
and did the employment of staff on their behalf.
2006- President & CEO, CEDI Sp.zo.o
After SINTEF left Poland I decided to stay and created my own personal company,
Creative Engineering Design and Innovation. This company was in 2006 transformed
into a shareholding company CEDI Sp.z.o. o
Curriculum Vitae for Mads Grahl-Madsen page 5 of 14
Initial customers was Framo Engineering and FMC technologies which engaged me
with projects related to Multiphase flow and flushing of hydraulic components. In
2007 I was asked by a Norwegian Venture fund to take on the development of a new
integrated hydraulic turbine for low head hydropower applications. They did not want
to have a company where they had to have responsibility for employees and all
activity was therefore outsourced to CEDI Sp.zo.o. However, Turbinova AS
(Norway) and Turbinova Sp.zo.o (Poland) was established as legal instruments and a
portal for funding. In a similar manner Panhydro AS and Panhydro Sp.zo.o was
established on my initiative as an instrument for generating projects where the focus
was hydropower development in Poland, not only turbine development. In
contradiction to Turbinova, Panhydro had employees in Poland, but was located
together with CEDI.
Funding for the R&D phase, i.e. bringing a prototype into operation was
uncomplicated. However, none of the shareholders, of which the Venture Fund was
the dominating, where willing to allocate money for the industrialisation phase. All
these companies is today dormant.
The technology applied, included turbine design, generator design, power electronics
and controller design. Two prototypes where installed in the south of Poland and
extensive model testing of turbine, generator and controllers where carried out prior
to the actual construction of the prototypes. It also involved several CFD and FEM
calculations. I was responsible for all activities within these companies, bearing in
mind that Turbinova did not have any employees.
2007-2009 PaNHydro AS Board member
2007-2010 PaNHydro Sp.zo.o President & CEO
2007-2009 Turbinova AS Director
Board member
2007-2009 Turbinova AS Director
2009-2013 Turbinova Sp.zo.o President
Through the activity also a large number of conceptual designs of power plants,
environmental reports and other documents was carried out for customers, involving
both hydrological and civil engineering expertise.
2007- Director & Technical Manager InLoop Sp.zo.o
The company was initiated from research I carried out at The Norwegian University
of Science and Technology and later at Bergen University College. The objective was
to develop a Computer code in Java that could perform an automated FMECA based
upon Manufacturing System Theory and a Markov process in order to establish
criticality. Several test cases was successfully carried out for Norwegian companies
and the core code was completed. Management did not succeed in getting off the
ground and today the company is dormant. I remain as director but there is no
activity.
