CTC Products for Paper Mills Background: Paper Mills are a unique and challenging environment! Not all sensors, cables, and connectors fit all applications. There are wet sections, hot dryer sections, and just general purpose process equipment in each paper machine that need special treatments. This is a general outline for choosing vibration analysis hardware for use in a Paper Mill. Cables and Sensors Wet Sections: Generally, in the wet end of the paper machine, the temperatures are less than 121 degrees C and the model AC192-1A (top exit) or model AC194-1A (side exit) can be used with great success while maintaining a smaller size/footprint. CB111 Teflon® Yellow jacketed cable with twisted shielded pairs, braided shield, and a drain wire is preferred. It has a rugged structure and high visibility that makes it ideal in paper machines. The connector for the wet end of the paper machine should be the A2R or B2R. These IP66 connectors are made from PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide) and provide maximum protection against caustic solutions used in the paper manufacturing process. They also make it easy for maintenance to connect and disconnect the cables during roll changes and other maintenance procedures.

Since both connectors are rated IP66, no lubrication or sealant should be used with either of these connectors. Install the both connectors under dry and clean conditions, by aligning the 2 pins to the 2 sockets using the keyway and for:

The A2R, tighten the threaded stainless steel locking collar. To remove the connector, unthread the locking collar.

The B2R, push the boot straight over the sensor connector. To remove the connector, pull it straight off the sensor. Do not use any twisting motion.

Dryer Sections: In the dryer sections where temperatures range between 121 – 150 degrees C, the AC207-1A (top exit) and AC208-1A (side exit) sensor should be used. CB111 Teflon® Yellow jacketed cable with twisted shielded pairs, braided shield, and a drain wire is preferred. It has a rugged structure that makes it ideal in dryers. The connector for the dryer section of the paper machine should be the A2R or B2R. These IP66 connectors are made from PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide) and provide maximum protection against higher temperatures used in the paper drying process. They also make it easy for maintenance to connect and disconnect the cables during roll changes and other maintenance procedures.

Process Equipment: The supporting process equipment (motors, fans, pumps) can use general purpose sensors and connectors. The model AC102-1A (top exit) or model AC104-1A (side exit) can be used with great success while maintaining a lower cost. CB102 Teflon® red jacketed cable with twisted shielded pairs, foil shield, and a drain wire is available. It is a reliable cable for process support equipment like motors, fans, and pumps. Low cost connectors like the A2A molded polycarbonate will still offer IP66 protection and provide a solid reliable connection to the sensor.

Cables and Sensors Summary: The different applications in the Paper Mill require different treatments. Each sensor, cable, and connector should be selected for functionality, durability, and cost. This will provide a successful installation for the customer.

Enclosures: Junction box: The CTC fiberglass model SB102 series junction boxes can be used with great success while maintaining a lower cost. This enclosure is ideal offering IP66 protection for washing, while providing an interface for standard data collector cables. Please note the online system expansion jacks for use with the optional 12 position plug.

In high temperature applications like the dryer sections, the CRHT102 or CRHT202 should be used for cable reduction.

Enclosures Summary: The different applications in the Paper Mill require different treatments. Just as with the sensors and cables, each enclosure should be selected for functionality, durability, and cost. Stainless steel enclosures are also available for demanding applications. This will provide a successful installation for the customer. If you have any questions, please call CTC and ask to speak to your Regional Sales Manager for further technical assistance.
