A word from the Director...NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY & WORKSHOP ON ‘BIO-JET FUEL - A KEY TO FUTURE GREEN AND SUSTAINABLE AVIATION’, FEBRUARY 28 –MARCH 1, 2014
Intense interest is being observed the world over about reducing the carbon footprint of civil aviation. The carbon tax imposed by Australia and European Union has led civil airlines such as KLM, Lufthansa, Finnair, Aero Mexico, Qantas, United Airlines etc to launch their flights with engines powered with biojet fuel. Also, it is well acknowledged that the civil aviation sector is increasing rapidly and more so in developing countries like India.
One of the Institute’s recent break-through researches is the development of a process for production of renewable aviation fuel from Jatropha curcas oil using non-noble metal catalyst. M/s Pratt & Whitney, Canada, along with Indian Oil

By the time this newsletter comes to your hands, 2014 would already be almost half way through. However, let me wish our well wishers a Very Happy and Prosperous 2014.
Prof Samir K Brahmachari, DG, CSIR and Secretary, DSIR
stsuperannuated on 31 December, 2013. The Institute thanks him for his love, affection and unstinted support. We shall always value and remember his work ethics and his optimism about the
stfuture of the Institute and CSIR. On 1 January, 2014, Dr T Ramasami, Secretary, DST took up the additional charge of DG, CSIR and Secretary, DSIR.
This quarter has seen landmark achievements in globalizing our research. The year started with a workshop with Australia under DST-sponsored AISRF funding. This was indeed a great success. This was followed by a conference and a meeting on the progress of Mini-DME project, a grand challenge project awarded by AISRF.
For the first time, CSIR-IIP conducted a course on ‘Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals’ abroad for SABIC in the Netherlands. We have also made a serious attempt to enter Saudi Arabia through the King Saud Arabia University at Riyadh.
Our scientists attended PETROTECH-2014 and participated in the exhibition. We have also, as usual, supported the oil marketing companies and PCRA for holding workshops on oil conservation.
It is a matter of pride and honour for the Institute that our ex-Directors, Dr I B Gulati and Dr TSR Prasada Rao were honoured with Life Time Achievement Awards; namely with the Chem Tech Foundation and PETROTECH awards, respectively. This speaks volumes of not only their individual contributions but also the leading role the Institute has played in research and technology commercialization in the hydrocarbon industry.
The Institute has indeed made an all-round progress and we thank our well-wishers and stakeholders for their contributions and all our staff and scientists to have made this happen.
Dr M O Garg

studies, we are now revamping a unit in a refinery, which will provide 30,000 tonnes per annum of bio-ATF at competitive rates for blending with the fossil jet fuel in operation of commercial flights.
With this background and with an aim to bring together major players in the aviation sector who would be interested in this development, and to promote its commercialization in our country and abroad, the Institute approached the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt of India, for their kind support in holding a workshop along with Australia. DST provided their complete support and encouragement to hold a strategic workshop entitled “Bio-jet Fuel – A Key to Future Green and Sustainable Aviation” during February 28 – March 1, 2014, coinciding with the National Science Day (February 28). As we know, the National Science Day is celebrated all over India to commemorate the stellar achievement of Sir C V Raman. On this day in the year 1928 he discovered the radiation effect involving the inelastic scattering of light which was later christened “Raman Effect”, and which earned Sir Raman the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
Researchers, refiners, aviation engine manufacturers, airline authorities, Government officials and other statutory authorities both from India and Australia attended this
workshop. Mr Indranil, DGCA; Gp Capt B A S Acharya, Air India; Ms Divya Vasudeva, ENVISA, France; Capt. Kamal Grover, Air-India; Dr Michelle de Silva, Prof Geoff Stevens, Dr Greg Martin, Prof Paul Webley and Dr Fatim Abbas Hasan, University of Melbourne; Dr Victoria Harritos, Dr Susan Blackburn and Dr Nicholas Burke, Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia; Dr Graham Dorrington, RMIT, Australia;

The workshop achieved its declared objectives, as under:
•Declarat ion pledging product ion, usage and demonstration of renewable aviation fuel in India and Australia
need of the hour is to make the optimum use of energy. ‘‘We must give importance to energy conservation and build an energy-efficiencey market in India,” he added.
He said that as the oil reserves are limited, we should realize the energy availability of our country before using it. The use of fuel is constantly rising in the world; hence its cost is increasing day by day.
The Chief Guest Mr S S Tolia said that oil is the most used natural fuel and its consumption is a matter of concern. Our country remained unaffected by the Recession due to the habit of saving prevalent among our people. This quality among the people must be replicated in the conservation of oil and gas, he added. He said that India meets its fuel requirements through coal, crude oil, natural gas, hydro and nuclear energy. 75% of our oil requirements are met through imports. Mr Tolia said that the consumption of petroleum products in 1950-51 was 3.5 million metric tonnes which is likely to go up to 188 million metric tonnes. It will amount to a sixty times increase in the last sixty years!
Mr S K Sinha, State Convener, Oil companies, threw light on the various programmes to be held for spreading the message of oil conservation, which would include workshops, besides essay and drawing competitions. He said that all the oil companies in Uttarakhand like the Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, PCRA and CSIR-IIP are committed to holding workshops to spread this message.
Mr Mayank Bhatnagar, Chief Regional Manger, HPCL, proposed the vote of thanks. Present at the programme were officials of oil distribution companies, petroleum and gas dealers, scientists from the Institute and students and teachers from the Kendriya Vidyalaya, CSIR-IIP and Shri Guru Ram Rai School, Nehrugram.
