Daryl Schomer enters his third season at the helm of the Saint Benedict golf program in 2013-14.

In his second season he led the Blazers to their second top-five tally at the MIAC golf championships in as many seasons. The Blazers also won their second straight Blazer Invite last season, finishing with the top-two scorers in the field in Grace Todora and Karly Pratt.

The Blazers also won their final tournament heading into the MIAC Championships, with a victory over St. Cloud State late in the season.

After a disappointing opening round at the MIAC Championships, Schomer led the Blazers to an 18-stroke improvement in their second round, before dropping seven more strokes in the final round to move up to fifth place.

In his first season, Schomer led the Blazers to a third place MIAC finish and placed in the top five in five meets. Then just a first-year, Todora set the MIAC record with her 71 on the second day of the MIAC Championships, on her way to an eight place tally and All-MIAC honors.

Formerly a PGA Professional, Daryl has over 15 years of experience teaching and coaching all levels of players from juniors to nationally ranked amateurs. Schomer brings a wealth of experience, collected from his accomplished mentors and lifelong dedication to teaching and playing the game competitively. Since regaining his amateur status over 10 years ago, Daryl now enjoys competing in state and national events, most notably the 2008 US Mid Amateur Championship.

In 2012 he placed second at the Minnesota State Amateur Championship, and in 2013, won the MGA Mixed Doubles Championship.

In addition to his work at Saint Benedict, Daryl is in his 12th year as a Real Estate professional and currently works for RE/MAX Results of St. Cloud, Minn.

Championship Mentality

Led by a talented upper class, the Blazer golf team is poised to make a run in the MIAC in 2013.

Each of the top five players in scoring average return in 2013 as the Saint Benedict golf team looks to build on its late-season momentum heading into the season.

“I’m getting the players coming off of their summer golf,” third-year head coach Daryl Schomer said. “So they should be coming into the season playing pretty strong already. Just looking forward to the MIAC and getting out there and competing, and hopefully challenging for a MIAC championship.”

Leading the charge is junior Grace Todora, whose average (83.1) was four strokes better than her closest teammate in 2012, while charting six top-10’s, five top-fives and one individual win along the way. Three of the five lowest rounds of the season were hers, including a 74 in the season opener, that stood all season as the Blazer’s best.

Now as an upperclassman, Todora has high expectations for herself and the team.

“I feel this year there is a little more pressure because I want to put my rounds together in order to help the team out and push our team to get better and hopefully got to nationals,” Todora said. “I want to go as a team, but a personal goal would be as an individual.”

Tying Todora with the lowest score of the season, is fellow junior Bridget Cummings. Cummings enters the season after leading the Blazers at the MIAC Championships, just missing out on her first All-MIAC honor with an 11th place finish. Cummings shot her 74 at the DIII Midwest Classic midway through the season, and added a 79 to close the year at the MIAC Championships.

Into their junior seasons, the pair of Todora and Cummings gives the Blazers a pair of leaders as good as anyone in the conference.

For the second straight season the Blazers will be led by a lone senior, and this year Jillian Sampair steps into that role. Sampair had the Blazers’ fourth lowest average a year ago, and enters her senior year as a team captain, and is excited for one final season.

“I’m really excited to lead the team and I’ve got a great team to push me,” Sampair said. “Winning the MIAC is up there, I would have to say that’s our first goal, and I think we can do it. We’re always right on the border of taking that title. Besides that, I think we can have a presence at each and every tournament and hopefully take a few of those too.”

Lauren Wise and Jenna Traut also return in 2013, after playing in the MIAC Championship in just their first season with the team, giving the Blazers experience all the way through their line-up.

The season opens on the first weekend of September, with tournaments each week leading up to the MIAC Championships, Oct. 5-7.

2012-13 Season ReviewThey played some of their best golf late in the season, winning tournaments and charting season-low rounds.

Blazer golf placed fifth at the MIAC Championships while also charting a pair of wins and several strong tournaments throughout the season.

Strength in the YouthIn looking at the five lowest rounds of the 2012 season for the Blazers, a pair of names repeat themselves. Grace Todora and Bridget Cummings hold all five marks, and were the only two players to shoot below 80 all season. Each carded a 74 for the lowest single round by a Blazer all year, with each adding a 79 while Todora also added a 76 to her credit.

The pair wrapped up just their sophomore seasons in 2012, and provide the Blazers with one of the top combos in the MIAC for the next two years. But if you looked at the top 11 scores from last year, all four golfers on the list are underclassmen, including first-year Lauren Wise who recorded a pair of 81’s, and looks to join her teammates in the 70’s as her career continues.

Todora led the team with an 83.1 average and five top-fives on the year, while Cummings and Wise were close behind at 87.1 and 87.9 respectively.

Led by Todora, the Blazers had their best round of the year in the season opener, as they shot a 327 at the Georgianni Memorial UW-Eau Claire Invite, and closed the first day just three strokes back in second.

Wins and Individual MedalistsLate in the season, the Blazers began to play some of their best golf, winning the annual Blazer Invite for the third straight season, before closing the regular season with a dual win over St. Cloud State.

They beat a four team field of MIAC foes at the Blazer Invite, leading the entire way through and eventually winning by 22 strokes. Todora took home individual medalist honors, and partnered with Karly Pratt to give the Blazers the top two scorers in the field. Todora’s 80 on the first day, was also the lowest round of the entire tournament.

A week later the Blazers hosted SCSU, and took a narrow, two-stroke win. Karly Pratt closed her senior season with her first individual win of the year. Todora was her usual consistent self, taking second just a stroke back.

MIAC ChampionshipsAt the MIAC Championships, a rough opening round hurt the Blazers throughout the tournament as they finished fifth, despite shooting a lower score in round two and their best of the tournament in the final round. The closed with a 329 on the final day, marking their second best round of the entire season, and the seventh best round of the MIAC Championships.

Cummings led the way with an 11th place, carding her second best round of the season with a 79, but just missed a top-ten tally but two strokes. Wise joined her in the top-15, placing 14th after a final-round 81.

The Blazers opened with a 353, and were in sixth after day one, before moving up a spot over the next two days. Their 335 in the second round was their third best team total of the season, and their 24-stroke drop from the first round to the third was the best of the tournament.

Woeful SpringIn recapping the season as a whole, we must at least mention the poor spring the Blazers had to suffer through. After getting back out on the course for the first time during spring break in Phoenix, the Blazers saw their next three tournaments back in Minnesota all canceled, including their own spring invitational.

They finally returned to the course in late April, playing at the Carleton Invitational, where they took fifth. It was their first tournament and outdoor action in a month, and their only full tournament of their 2013 spring season.

The lone senior last season, Karly Pratt grabbed individual medalist honors with an 85 at the SCSU Dual to close the regular season.
