Steve Kimble enters his fifth year as head coach for the Blazer soccer team in 2013.

In 2012 he led CSB back to the MIAC Tournament, while also extending the program’s streak to 24 consecutive winning seasons. The

Blazers went 7-6-4 on the year, with a 6-4-1 mark in MIAC play.

Throughout the season, Kimble’s Blazers were the only team in the MIAC to score in every regular season game, gaining the distinction as the only team in the league to never be shutout. He led Colleen Bouchard, Alyssa Hoffman and Laura Kosch to All-MIAC accolades, with Bouchard collecting her second consecutive All-Region honor.

In just his third season, Kimble led the team to a first-place MIAC finish, the fourth MIAC Championship title in program history. The season included an eight-game win streak, highlighted by a win over nationally ranked Carleton. Following their 1-0 win against Concordia that clinched MIAC Tournament title, Kimble advanced the team to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. There they were defeated by No. 12 Washington University of St. Louis (Mo), ending their season ranked No. 22 in the nation.

For his accomplishments, Kimble was named both NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year and the MIAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year. At the end of the year he was also selected as the head coach of the USA DIII All-Star team that toured in Brazil.

In 2009, Kimble took the position as head soccer coach for the College of Saint Benedict. During his first season, the Blazers went 10-7-1 overall and 6-5-0 in conference play, tying for fifth in the MIAC. In 2010, the Blazers went 7-3-1 in conference play and finished third in the MIAC standings. After four seasons, Kimble is 41-27-9 overall with the Blazers, with a 27-14-3 mark in conference play.

From 2003 to 2008 Kimble served as a coach and Director of Coaching for the Lakes Area Youth Soccer Association. In addition, Coach Kimble has been a

Coerver Coaching Camp Clinician and Camp Director for six years.

He began his coaching career in 1995, where he served as a St. Cloud Soccer Club coach and Director of Coaching Education until 2002. From 1998-2002, he worked with Sartell High School as the assistant girls soccer coach and track & field throws coach. Kimble also assisted in the SJU track and field program in 2000. From there, he went on to Brainerd High School, where he was hired as head girls soccer and track & field pole vault coach. In a successful run with the girls’ soccer program he was named Section 8AA coach of the year twice, won five consecutive conference titles, and qualified twice for the state tournament. In his last five years at Brainerd, Kimble’s record against Central Lakes Conference opponents was 58-5-3.

2013 Season OutlookThe top four goal scorers and the defensive backbone all return for the Saint Benedict soccer team in 2013, creating a high level of anticipation for head coach Steve Kimble entering his fifth season.

“The beginning of every season is just an absolute highlight of the year for every coach and every player,” Kimble said. “We’ve got a high bar in our program and we want to maintain that standard, and obviously raise the bar. For me as a coach, it’s a lot of anxiety and excitement mixed together.”

The Blazers charted the programs the 24th consecutive winning season in 2012, posting a 7-6-4 overall record with a 6-4-1 mark in MIAC play. Winning a tiebreaker at fourth place with Macalester – by virtue of a 1-0 win over the Scots in the regular season – they advanced to the MIAC Tournament where they fell in the semifinals by a narrow 1-0 score to MIAC champion Concordia.

They were never shutout in the regular season, making the Blazers the only team in the MIAC to stake that claim. Over 50% of their goal scoring came from the potent pairing of Colleen Bouchard and Alyssa Hoffman. With the two returning for their senior and sophomore season’s respectively, they’re ready to carry the load again this season.

“For me, the mentality to score stays the same,” Bouchard said. “But we had the first-years last year who stepped up a ton and now we can be even more balanced than we were last year and I think that will help the team overall.”

Bouchard enters her senior season with 18 career goals to her credit, which includes a career high seven in each of the last two seasons. As a junior last year she also added a career high nine assists for 23 total points, the best mark in her three years. She has been an All-MIAC performer in each of her previous three seasons, and was an All-Region honoree for the last two.

After winning the 2011 MIAC title, heading into her final year she’s ready to lead the Blazers back to the top of the conference.

“We definitely have the goal to win the MIAC,” Bouchard said. “That’s our highest goal, but first we have to take each conference game as it comes, we can’t look past anybody. It has to be one step at a time, and we have to improve early in the season and win our nonconference games as well.”

Also an All-MIAC player, Hoffman was part of a large class of first-years in 2012. Five members of this year’s sophomore class saw time in the starting line-up last season, with Hoffman and Megan Lenz seeing action in all 17 games.

While Hoffman was making plays up top, Ellie Mullen became a staple in the back row, and this season with team up with Lenz along the backline. The pair along with senior Kristina Burk make up a formidable returning core of defenders to keep opposing offenses out of the attacking zone.

The Blazers pitched four shutouts last season, with the defense ultimately backed by goalkeeper Megan Favorite. Favorite enters her junior season as a two-year starter, with 11 shutouts already to her credit. And she is ready take on a bigger role as a leader in her third year.

“I’m really excited to be able to step up into a leadership position,” Favorite said. “I’ve already felt it through last year and my first year, but now that I’m an upperclassman, I really feel like I can do it. So I’m really excited to take that role and work with our captains and fulfill the goals we have as a team.”

As with any year, the Blazers will look to their seniors for leadership in 2013, and a group of four takes center stage this fall. But the added luxury is the talented and experienced team around them that has the potential to make them a championship contender once the final weeks of the season roll around.

“Our sophomore class got a ton of experience last year, so you’ve got a good mix of young talent,” Kimble said. “We don’t need to rely on our incoming class as much as we did last year, but there will be some that play. And then you wrap it up with four seniors that have been some of our best players of the previous three seasons with Laura Kosch, Bouchard, Kaitlyn Lauer and Burk. You’ve got good leadership and good young talent and that’s why I think we’re all excited about it.”

Alyssa Hoffman scored twice - including the game winner - in a 3-1 win over St. Thomas that sent the Blazers on a six-game unbeaten streak late in the season to put them in the playoffs.
